My thinking is that it was probably the phrasing/context that was a problem. I mean, when has ND ever done something like that with a kid? Why would you ever bring up that someone isn't good enough/smart enough for your school? Just doesn't even make sense.
My guess is that Mattison was probably trying to contrast Michigan to Nebraska and say something like "Nebraska is ordinary/normal, Michigan is exceptional" and just phrased it like an idiot.
this. he was trying to show the family that because of football he should be taking full advantage of his ability to get into otherwise unattainable universities.
He just stated it very very poorly.
