After thinking about it for another few minutes, I'm almost 100% certain that there's no way anyone on ND's staff would make that pitch.

If there is anyone on the staff that thought it would be a good idea to (1) pretend Ann Arbor and Detroit are the same thing and (2) not realize "hmmm South Bend isn't great, this might look bad if anyone does a minute's worth of research," they should grab their shit and leave.

All you have to do is drive up Lincoln Way from the South Bend airport and you'll see boarded up houses every 4th building. South Bend is nothing to brag about.

I don't recall Ann Arbor ever getting a reference in Hoosiers, so take that scUM

It’s not like it isn’t true. Ann Arbor > South Bend. Hell, Downtown Detroit > Downtown South Bend.

Webb starts off the accusation with, "So case in point, let me give you a hypothetical that is based squarely in fact."

What does that even mean? ND is being accused of a hypothetical scenario?

IF someone at ND said exactly what Webb is reporting to the Ojabo's, then shame on them. My money's on the story's been twisted to arrive at this windbag's narrative.

I'm kind pissed at our staff if that's true lol.

Not only is it hypocritical, but it's lazy and easily turned around.

I'm hoping it was a simple "here's what quality of life looks like in different parts of the country," and the scUM people ran with it as a direct attack.

I’m not gonna click the link, what was said?

Only if you like noxious smells. You walk out of your car in Detroit and the smell hits you like rotting melon.

I highly doubt this is a pitch of ND's. This sounds retarded and made up. I'm sure something was taken completely out of context and some scUM douche bags ran with it. Ann Arbor is an hour from Detroit so that doesn't make that much sense, but Ypsilanti right down the road is garbage. I'm pretty sure ND is a little more professional and would come up with a more educated pitch than that. This is a complete eye roller.

Jamie at ISD brought up a good point, Elston is Ojabo's recruiter. Elston, the guy who played at Michigan and coached for them, is negative recruiting on the dumbest premise ever...yeah that's a nah.

That's just the south winds coming from Toledo.

That explains more about Toledo than anything. No wonder they have so many scUM fans there, and the city is a blight on the state of Ohio. They're basically downwind from Detroit.

Basically that ND is negative recruiting Michigan by providing recruits and their families with crime rates from Detroit with South Bend, making the point that South Bend is a better place to live than Ann Arbor. They also referenced the pitch to "an international family". So reading between the lines that pitch was made to the Obajo's.

Sounds like complete made up B.S to me.

My suspicion is that if this is true, it was a reaction to negative recruiting on Michigan‘s part. That is to say, Michigan was the one who led with South Bend crime rate, and the coaches felt the need to respond somehow. Because I can’t conceive of any reason they did bring it up organically.

lol... so the premise is that Elston -- a Michigan guy -- was neg recruiting Michigan by telling Ojabo's family that Ann Arbor = Detroit.

I guarantee you that never happened.

It's reasonable to think that we provided info on crime rates, etc. to families and that we contrasted it with other major cities. There is a 0% chance that Mike Elston told a kid that the University of Michigan was located in Detroit. 0%. This sounds like a game of telephone gone very awry to feed message board morons.

lIt's reasonable to think that we provided info on crime rates, etc. to families and that we contrasted it with other major cities.

That was my first thought. They were showing the family a quality of life packet or chart or something, and the recruit's family took a mental note of the numbers on Detroit, not knowing if Detroit relates directly to scUM or not, and then asked scUM's coaching staff if there was any relation.

scUM people hear about it, and either believe or conveniently and purposely "assume" that ND was trying to neg recruit the state of Michigan and Detroit.

This. My exact thought. He lost me as soon as he said that. Webb is an insufferable homer. Every fan base has these journalists obviously, but some subjectivity is always appreciated.

I used to try and tune in to 1050am during scUM/ND game weeks, in an attempt to hear some banter about the upcoming game, but it is unbearable.

In 2014, you would have thought we were heading into a match-up against the '85 Bears, and beat them 37-0. I couldn't even enjoy the sweet victory by tuning in the next week because his "analysis" of the game was predicated around a litany of excuses and Redfield's hit on Gardner.

Didn't say it was bad and it will get Jimmy 15 minutes of attention. We all know that anyone that reads the headline is going to roll their eyes.

Not me. This what everyone needs to do. Offers and commitments are meaningless words. What's not meaningless is establishing a connection with a young, impressionable football fan/prospect.
