tOSU had the goods to fire both of them for cause and didn't. And this was them doing their own investigation. Barring a major NCAA violation or players committing serious felonies, UM will be at tOSU as long as he wants. Smith is probably retiring in 16 months or so when his contract runs out.

To be clear, I don’t think Meyer will be fired, at least not officially (unless it’s something really bad). There are like 32 million reasons for that. But any trust/goodwill/benefit of the doubt was just burned up. So the next time things get hard, as they always do eventually, it’ll be “better for all involved” if he moves on.

ESPN mentioned this morning that it would be surprising if he's able to recruit at the same level again because of what this will do to his reputation, but I can assure everyone that their recruiting won't take a very big hit at all. 95% of recruits care about two things, winning & NFL. Everything else is all just smoke and mirrors.

To be fair I can't see any of the players coming out and saying "Coach UM is a scumbag" and hoping to play at that school ever again

Urban is going to go into families' living rooms and spin whatever tale about this incident that he fancies. He'll make the family feel like they're getting the "real, inside scoop," and make himself out to be the victim/hero, and either make Smith the scapegoat or an additional victim to a crazy lady and a witch hunt.

He'll then gloss all of that over with tales of "Real Life Wednesday" and how "Buckeyes take care of Buckeyes after graduation and the NFL," and the parents will forget what a HUGE FUCKING RED FLAG Urban's entire personal history has been.

Mom will feel good about THE Ohio State taking care of Little Johnny, and dad will feel good that the NFL is still on the table since Urban is still coaching and had a semi-decent excuse for all the bullshit, and Little Johnny will sign on the dotted line come NSD.

While I agree, if I was a parent to one of these recruits, at best, it'd be a no comment. Coming out in support of Urban Meyer is fucking pathetic and I'm surprised prospects like Harry Miller and his family are doing so.

Correct, unless something else pops up he'll be there as long as he's winning. Still waiting to hear from Courtney Smith. If there is anyone that could put this thing back in a downward spiral, it's her.

First thing Urban does is erase/delete all texts over a year old. Should have been fired for that alone. True scumbag. Shame on OSU.

While I agree that UM is dirty and it seems clear he lied here to save his own ass but I question the benefits of this policy as it applies to the facts surrounding Smith.

Should his duty extend to reporting a mere allegation (I understand this was more than a mere allegation but he would have a duty to report a mere allegation as I understand it) of a staff member if it involves a spouse and occurs off campus in their home?

If I had a duty to monitor the personal lives of the individuals I manage, it would be incredibly difficult for me to report alleged misdeeds to a superior. How does that help the situation? What position am I in to do fact gathering? Does reporting the employee help the alleged victim or their children if they have any?

The duty to affirmatively act for a mere allegation strikes me as excessive even in this case where UM is a state employee being paid well to fulfill his duties. We have a police force and domestic courts to resolve domestic disputes. The uncomfortable truth is that a victim of domestic abuse, more often than not, is better served when their abuser is employed. That holds true if they decide to seek counseling or they separate and the abuser is required to maintain domestic support obligations.

That's not true, he didn't erase or delete any texts. He just simply changed a setting on his iPhone. A huge difference.

You should hear some of the rationalizations over in the David Dennison thread. Yeah Urban should be fired, but The president...he’s a baller.

A few thoughts:
1: This wasn’t one “mere allegation.” This was a string of bad behavior over years and across jobs at multiple employers. They knew he was a dirtbag.

2: Maybe Urban thought Smith (and his wife) was better off with the structure of a job and all that. Ok. If that’s the case, make that argument, don’t play dumb about what you knew and when.

3: Assistant coaches are dismissed or moved along for all sorts of reasons all the time. This isn’t like removing a tenured professor, or even, say, a high school teacher with union protection. You don’t need piles of paperwork documenting the abuse. You just don’t renew the guy’s contract.

4: Most importantly (to me anyway): An assistant college football coach is supposed to be an educator, with a lot of responsibility in the lives of young men. This is the kind of person Urban Meyer wants in that job? What kind of message does that send to players, their families, hell even the other coaches? I’d be curious what Tony Alford thinks of this situation.

Legally, they rationalized a way to cover Meyer’s ass. Ethically, he’s hanging in the wind.

Agreed on your first point.

The scenario in your second point violates the terms of his contract. He has to report.

Scenario in point three seems to violate the terms as well. He has a duty to report and can't wait for his contract to expire and not renew.

Agreed on point four but still do not agree that he should have a duty to report allegations of private matters involving an assistant and his wife.

Whether or not Meyer has, or should have, an obligation to report allegations of domestic violence by one of his assistants, and regardless the legal result of any reporting, Meyer was under no obligation to continue employing Zach Smith as an assistant football coach, given what he clearly knew about the man. That he did tells tells me everything I need to know.

no matter how you slice it some powerful people at OSU had to cover for some pretty shady behavior. Expect them to close ranks now, but they will not want a repeat performance. Urban will have people looking over his shoulder moving forward and that never goes well.

https://sports.yahoo.com/gene-smiths-attorney-smith-meyer-fell-sword-ohio-state-043130453.html

“The country was lathered into a frenzy based on erroneous information and a long delay and [Ohio State] needed to appease the lynch mob that had formed as soon as the unproven allegations were made,” Elliott wrote. “As a result, two great men fell on the sword for a University they dearly love.

“And both men faced a room full of reporters and admitted they failed in their duties to better manage and react quicker to a troubled employee even though they had no idea about the information that has since come out about some of the things he may have been doing.”

Shame on OSU...though "shame left the building" long ago.

I agree for the most part. It's clear Smith was toxic on many levels. UM's either a complete moron incapable of reasonable decision making or he has very little interest in the off the field development of the young men he coaches. Plenty of evidence suggests the latter is the issue. He should have been terminated, but this clause strikes me as too far reaching and will likely present an issue for coaches going forward as it's becoming increasingly common in their contracts.

I watched the first 4 episodes of qb1 on Netflix last night.

I probably couldn't find a more unlikable qb than tate Martell if I tried.

Fromm seems like the perfect qb, whereas Martell seems like the king of douches

The message to players is - you gonna do stupid sh!t and we will go above and beyond to keep it under wraps. Pretty good recruiting pitch to some very good athletes out there.

Urbie just got added to a ton of schools' "never hire" list. Sure someplace like Tennessee or TAMU would gladly give him another shot if he has another health scare but his leverage for his next contract is sub-optimal.

We butt heads here and there but as parents we both agree this is pathetic, if my daughter (or if I had a son) was in this situation with a coach it would be "no comment" and my wife and I would be having a very serious conversation with our child about looking at other options.... No way I would allow my child to be mentored, coached or recruiting by Urban Meyer

I am shocked by the recruits and their families response, if this was happening at ND I would strongly encourage my daughter to look elsewhere as these aren't the type of men, leaders or administrators I want impacting/directing my child.

That press release by the school is setting this up perfectly for him to have a "health scare". The whole memory loss angle was not something I was expecting.

I'm surprised that you guys are surprised that the commits and families are ok with this.

It's some Johnny Cochran level BS. It would be ridiculous on Days of our Lives - "Oh, Susan. I would have told you I skull Fd your dead sister but I have this horrible memory loss thing. Totally forgot all about that and erased all my selfies I texted to my buddies yesterday."
