- Dad wanted Oregon ($$$), Mom wanted ND. Neither wanted him to go to OU.

- His timeline of accurately conveying his true stance to ND is completely muddied and he shelled up.

- Committing to Oregon on National Signing Day and then basically just not talking to them right after is a wild move.

- Said his Dad took ND off the table and refused to elaborate more - $$$.

- When I think of NIL I think of trying to get my money as soon as possible.
I wonder how much Peyton’s recruitment will impact Eli’s recruitment. I hope he likes Oklahoma because big brother and dad burned a lot of bridges with their approach to his recruitment. I wouldn’t even pick up the phone if I were Oregon or ND.

Can’t trust the family, and you have to make sure you meet your position needs.

I’m sure if/when Bowen the eldest is in the portal and his brother is deciding on schools Oregon would listen.

That may explain a fair bit about why we only ever heard about mom on visits and such until pretty late in the process when dad showed up and all of a sudden NIL became a big factor.

Anyway, only person I feel bad for in all this is mom. The image of her when he pulled the hat fake…

From no hat on the table, to enrolling next week. Why can’t we ever be this lucky in recruiting, specifically 5-star recruiting?!

The harsh reality.

I’m sure MF doesn’t want to go down this road again with the family.

That tells you the whole story right there.

Dad convinced the kid to go after the big pay day, where he would conveniently get to play with his brother in the future.

But Oregon wasn't prepared to pony up immediately with a surprise last-minute commitment.

Even if ND had NEVER been involved with this recruitment, and I had just read about this as a recruiting battle between like Oregon and USC... I would still hope that his dad lays awake at night, feeling guilty and wondering where he went wrong in how he participated in the recruitment.

My guess is he doesn't considering after Peyton choose Oregon (to try to make everyone happy) and the money wasn't there, Dad still felt the need to take ND off the table. In the end it all doesn't really matter though, ND like always had Mom in their corner but that was never going to be enough. He seems at peace with it all now, which good for him.

Yeah, I get the difficulty of being torn in two directions by the people who are supposed to guide you through life. It's good that he had a third option, and one that was close to home, to settle on.

And I guess you're right... it's also good for his dad that Oklahoma was able to offer some type of guaranteed up-front payment, too, as that's all the guy was concerned about.

If his dad didn't seem like such a villain, I could bring myself to play devil's advocate and mention that Peyton views the NIL stuff as pre-NFL insurance, since that's kind of how it sounded in that interview. But that's not how dad views it, based on the evidence, which means he's just looking for the biggest, most immediate payday. And I could even understand that, if it weren't actively fucking up the entire dynamic of Peyton's decision-making.

Didn’t watch the video but did read The Athletic story where Peyton basically said that as a defensive player - in comparison with his buddy Jackson Arnold - there’s only so much he’s ever going to get through NIL. So if he can he should get a little something now, essentially as insurance on not making it big in college or reaching the NFL.

That’s actually pretty wise from his perspective. But also pretty problematic from ours. ND really needs to figure out the upfront payment situation or we’re going to lose out on so many guys.

Man, I'm just not sure I agree with this. Like I tend to get what's being said in terms of "my marketing dollars are limited relative to a QB" but we had Kyle Hamilton making bank in Year 1 of NIL. This seems more like some logic his dad convinced him on than real life... take the money now vs. look at potential money later.

What are all the hypothetical scenarios?
Option 1: Total bust, injury, etc. Ok then he has a small amount of money in his pocket and an Oklahoma degree for the rest of his life.
Option 2: Good college player, but only a middle-to-late round NFL pick who makes minimal money in the league. Would probably have similar NIL earnings over 4 years at ND versus Oklahoma, then have similar NFL earnings, and ND degree for second career that he starts in his 20s.
Option 3: Elite player, top NFL draft pick, long pro career. The NIL money would be equivocal and immaterial between ND and Oklahoma, NFL money the same, degree doesn't mean as much because you don't need a second career.

In all of these scenarios, the one where going to Oklahoma vs ND matters the least is the one where he ends up being an elite pro. The one where ND seems like the best choice is the one where he busts or is a mediocre pro prospect. The math all changes if he's getting 7 figures up front from a school... which is enough to give you a big head start in life, even if not enough to retire on... but by all accounts that's not actually what he ended up getting.

I'm not sure I'm looking at this correctly, and I don't want to overshare, but I'm pretty sure what Oklahoma gave him in terms of up front money pays a couple years of mortgage + daycare on a nice house in a major metropolitan area. Your "insurance" comes from a degree and job placement if something goes wrong with football (again, unless you actually get a deal like Nico got at Tenn, and then by all means I'd advise pretty much anyone to take it).

Yes the idea that I could get hurt so I need my money early is certainly a way to think about it, but not sure it’s necessarily the way to think about it. It’s more of a justification than reason IMO. Basically does fly in the face of NDs pitch of 4 for 40 so there’s the debate you had in the Bowen household.

The worry with that line of thinking is complacency IMO. Well I have my money now so I’m set anyways.

Still… I want to know what the altercation was between dad and ND… and with who at ND.

No info, but an easy guess is Dad vs MFMF.

Freeman laid down the law to Peyton after the hat fake, instead of kissing his ass and begging for him to reconsider. Peyton's dad didn't like it.

His dad said something along the lines of “Michigan did nothing wrong”

LMFAO how disingenuous. Yes, let's ignore the fact that Bama has won 3 of the previous CFPs and focus on the 1 of 2 total years (of 9) they didn't make it. lol can't make this shit up.
TP, what do you do as a job/career? I'm really curious about the field you work in and what your daily responsibilities look like.
