The odds of a Z WR becoming a star at TE U were never good. Our roster dictates a style of play that disfavors them . Sucks to lose such a unique athlete, but it likely saves us the existential anguish over his eventual transfer or the mystery over why his talent is being wasted on the bench.
I guess my hope was ND would run more of a college offense.

I’m honestly kinda shocked that he would pull the trigger that quick for “coach prime”… would’ve actually respected it more if he went back to KSU.

Saying we got NIL’d by Colorado… if true… is devastating and hilarious. Hard to believe on the surface but weirder shit has happened. Aurrileous Bennett got “NIL’d” to freaking Illinois back when we used to call them “bag men.”
Judgement aside, could it just be that this kid just wanted to play for Prime? I find it harder to believe that Colorado was a nothing program last week, hired Prime, and now has a full bag-dropping NIL operation up in one week's time.

You don’t succeed by giving up strengths, but by building on them. You’re never sitting a guy like Mayer for Edward. They directly compete with each other for snaps.

Sure but Edelman/Welker seemed to coexist well with Gronk. Welker might be a good comp size wise.

It’s a bummer. But this is the game right now.

Whether it was NIL or just Deion almost doesn’t matter. He was a late flip to us anyway and then something that excited him even more came along.

Godspeed, kid (and you’re fast). We’ve got other fast guys. It’ll be OK.

First there was Davonte Neal.
Then there was Isaiah Mackenzie... who didnt come to ND because he wanted to have sex.
Then there was that kid from georgia that they sent the truck for... cant remember his name. He bounced around a couple of times long before the tranfer portal was even a thing.

Better to stick with TE's.

I tend to agree. Was surprised to see Driskell blame “NIL” for this.

I'm more in the line with Driskells reasoning of the RB/WR picture being too deep. With Hillman potentially playing offense, it would seem Edwards doesn't want to compete against all those guys and wants to be "the guy". Oh well. Onwards and upwards. Good luck to ya kid

If I were Prime I would subsidize with my own money in year one. Surely he can afford it. Prime needs the momentum to continue so why not.

Ther can be a difference of up front versus potential NIL. There is no doubt Prime is selling how to make a brand and profit from it. If I was a recruit interested in NIL, there is no doubt I would believe whatever the hell Prime would tell me. Until proven otherwise, he is right.

Demetrious Robertson I believe is the name that eludes you.

I read that apparently Edwards has a prior relationship with Neon from back when he lived in Texas.

I'm sure some NIL money is coming his way, but I think the chance to play under Prime played a huge role in this.

All in all, sucks, but this loss is mitigated with the addition of Kaleb Smith, who IMO, is a stud slot receiver in the making, which is where I projected Edwards in the long-run.

They can’t even pay Sanders yet! Maybe he’s funding the P4P up front with an agreement to be paid back once his guys have independent endorsements, but this thing is gonna fall to pieces at the first bump in the road. They’re all leveraged up to their eyeballs.

I am not surprised. Driskell rarely is honest about our hurdles.

I doubt it’s NIL as Wiskey Jack just said/ Prime shows up 4 days ago and he has big NIL money already?? No.

Unfortunately it’s more basic. Coach Prime is off the charts charisma. If a player or his family sees this charisma it’s going to be tough to push away for the more basic and better offerings of ND.

It sucks that Freeman was just there - a real kick in the pants. But Deion is probably the most charismatic coach out there w plenty of PT.

Wasn’t Driskell also saying (just yesterday I think) that there essentially wasn’t any smoke to the Edwards and Colorado rumor? Maybe he just likes to put his voice out there but doesn’t know anything?

You build your passing game around your strength. Mayer was it. Next year it could be Merriweather or another WR.

Yeah, I can't imagine there are that many snowboarders that are independently wealthy where they can line fund a lot of NIL deals.

Trying to remember the last time our strength was small fast guys tho. I guess Fuller? Mostly since then we haven't seemed able to figure out what to do with them (or have a QB capable of it).

Fuller wasn’t really “small” though. When I think of a productive smaller players at ND I think Theo Riddick is about the last one.

I don't think bringing a guy like Edwards in automatically means a talented TE is losing snaps.

I picture Edwards being the guy motioning through the backfield on Tommy's RPO calls, which still leaves one or two TE's on the field to block/run routes.

You're really sacrificing a second RB or one of the "true" WR's snaps for Edwards.

Now, if Tommy transitions to 11 personnel as a legitimate base for his offense (which it has seemed in the past that he would like to do), THEN you're sacrificing snaps for the #2 and #3 TE's in favor of a slot receiver.

But I would argue that recruiting to the current strengths of the team, that being 12/22 personnel, Edwards is the exact kind of hybrid that you want as a guy that lines up outside to either motion through for a jet sweep or route to the flat, or to run a quick-option route from the outside if he doesn't motion.

If you want an offense with dynamic options, Edwards would have given them one of those. He was never going to be a back that carried the load. He was a piece to the puzzle.

Watching his highlights, his height and weight were really the furthest thing from my mind. His speed and ability to break away once in space would have been nice to have on offense and special teams.

Yeah, and Fuller played as an outside receiver. Probably not what we'd have used Edwards for. Interestingly, Riddick had 20 pounds on Fuller, and on TJ Jones, though he was listed 2-3 inches shorter than them. All of them substantially bigger than this kid. So yeah it's been a bit.
