If you want an offense with dynamic options, Edwards would have given them one of those. He was never going to be a back that carried the load. He was a piece to the puzzle.

Watching his highlights, his height and weight were really the furthest thing from my mind. His speed and ability to break away once in space would have been nice to have on offense and special teams.

Seems like one of the fastest kids coming out HS. Sucks losing him. It sucks also that Freeman was just there. C'est La Vie.....but Ugh it hurts.

Honestly it takes some mental gymnastics to say Edwards isn't a fit and wouldn't be impactful. I get it that we want to rationalize losing him. But the dude may have gamebreaker speed and agility and would just be another weapon in the arsenal. ND doesn't have anyone like him on the roster.

Coping mechanism, bruh. Works 60% of the time, every time.

Being able to hold onto 3, 4 star RBs is one class always seemed difficult. These kids get the ball a ton in HS and won't want to max out at 10 touches a game. Was hoping the 2 we'd hold onto were Edwards and Love though.

Limar is better, overall, imo.
Edwards is destined to be a gadget

But, arguably, maybe a deep room + a gadget is what is needed?

I don't think Edwards was ever going to be a traditional RB. No one really uses the term "scat back" anymore but that's what he is. He wouldn't really be competing with Love and Limar and the rest of the room. He would ideally get the ball like 3-5 times a game, hopefully in space.

It is totally possible Prime is pitching him as the premier back in their class but it would be a lie for anyone to say he would be an every down back. He is not built for that.

I thought he could become our Nyheim Hines. 5-10 carries a game with 15-20 touches if you include returns and receptions.

If Colorado is trying to convince him to be an every down back they better go out and get a 5 star OL

There's obviously some cope going on, but who's the last player like Edwards that was successful and heavily utilized in ND's offense? We all pine over the small shifty Z-WR each year (grass is always greener, etc.) but his skill set is not an obvious plug-n-play for what we do.

Off the cuff Z's that fit that mold. LKIII, CJ Sanders, ADavis...... Only one that was really productive is Davis.

Edwards is the type of player you bring in if you want the ability to score from anywhere on the field and not having rely on an ability to drive the length of the field in 7-12 plays for every touchdown. We had very few homeruns this year. Lots of doubles.

I agree but I don't understand how we are better off without a dude who very well could be a walking 6 like DeAnthony Thomas.

Also, 1. Rees won't be here by the time Edwards is an upperclassmen. OCs just don't stay that long anywhere, and 2. Rees could still grow as a playcaller and learn to utilize all his weapons. In fact he has to if he wants to reach his goals of NFL OC/coach.

We also had a 5'7 QB throwing noodles to a TE in quad coverage.

No one is saying we're better off without him. But it helps ease the blow of his decommitment to realize that, without radical changes to our offense, he may never have been more than a gadget player for us.

This isn't a Rees issues. Look back over the last 5 OCs we've had. Not one of them has run an offense that would have show-cased someone like Edwards. Schemes can change quickly, but OL and TE being recruiting strengths and therefore the bedrock of our offensive identity is not going to change.

Carlisle was good. I struggle to include CJ (you are not wrong but) he was most productive as a RB, and RB was his final position.

Just my take
Theo Riddick was the same.
Riddick, Procise and Carlisle were all significantly larger than Edwards coming out of high school. Each was a capable receiver coming out of the backfield, but they still had the size and strength to be RB1 when needed. That makes a big difference in an offense like ours.

I think it really sucks to lose Edwards because he'll be a PR/KR starter in college. He could house a couple+ each year. His cutting/speed combo is insane. Now we haven't seen it against great competition but his speed is undeniable.

Having said that: Love, Limar, our WR commits and our TEs all take the sting out of this one. I loved Dylan Edwards highlights but he wasn't fully sold on ND so there is nothing left to do. He traded ND/Freeman for CU/Deion: some people would trade a surf'n turf T-bone paired with shrimp n grits for a McDonald's quarter pounder and some fries.

ND will be ok and it's pointless to go on about what was lost. Looking forward to all the early enrollees who want to wear the Golden dome.

Did we ever figure out what happened to the “ND” diamond chain? Hope that was returnable…
