My thoughts are similar, but I think the Big 10 is very irrelevant now too. Outside Ohio State, the Big 10 stinks. The Pac 12 and Big 10 (besides OSU) never put teams in the CFP. It is more like Power 3.5, not Power 5 conferences.

Yeah, I would largely agree with this. They had MSU about 5 years ago, and that was great for the conference. A team that was competing with OSU, winning Rose Bowls and actually made a playoff.

Outside of that brief stint my the Spartans, you have teams like Wisconsin, scUM and PSU who are decent but not on that level. I really wonder if Wisconsin would be winning 10 games a year if they balanced out the two divisions. The latter two are really only relevant by the media narrative because I think they are starving for another competitive team to represent the B1G, but even if they win 9 or 10 they continue to prove that pOSU is in a league of their own. Can't get over that hump.

News like this coming out from one of their universities makes it more difficult for the Big Ten to come back.

https://sports.yahoo.com/big-ten-co...-myocarditis-penn-state-doctor-164111708.html
When we looked at our COVID-positive athletes, whether they were symptomatic or not, 30 to roughly 35 percent of their heart muscles (are) inflamed,” Sebastianelli said. “And we really just don’t know what to do with it right now. It’s still very early in the infection. Some of that has led to the Pac-12 and the Big Ten’s decision to sort of put a hiatus on what’s happening.”

Myocarditis was reportedly linked last month to several Big Ten athletes who contracted COVID-19. It can cause cardiomyopathy, a disease of the heart muscle.

“You could have a very high-level athlete who’s got a very superior VO2 max and cardiac output who gets infected with COVID and can drop his or her VO2 max and cardiac output just by 10 percent, and that could make them go from elite status to average status,” Sebastianelli said. “We don’t know that. We don’t know how long that’s going to last. What we have seen is when people have been studied with cardiac MRI scans — symptomatic and asymptomatic COVID infections — is a level of inflammation in cardiac muscle that just is alarming.”

https://www.espn.com/college-footba...pionship-media-panel-notre-dame-picked-second

Clemson is the overwhelming preseason choice to win the ACC, with Notre Dame picked to finish second, the league announced Friday.

The Tigers received 132 of the media panel's 134 first-place votes. Notre Dame received the other two. So if the preseason poll bears out, Clemson and Notre Dame would play in the ACC championship game at the end of the season. The ACC did away with divisions for this year only, so the top two teams with the highest conference win percentages will meet in Charlotte, North Carolina, on Dec. 12 or Dec. 19.

Serious question.... if in fact these are things they are seeing (inflamed heart muscles and decreased outputs/ fitness), is that NOT a real concern for young athletes, let alone the population in general?

If so why is not an issue for other schools like ND and SEC/ACC schools? Are they overlooking? Less concerned? Not seeing the same things?

Couple thoughts:
1. It’s easily detectable. Team doctors now have to do an extra layer of screening.
2. It can last from only a few hours to a few weeks. This isn’t a long term issue as long as it’s detected.

That's the question everyone has. How are two conferences and their doctors dissecting the data compared to the others? The real question is this a temporary situation or permanent? Will the heart return to normal after an undetermined period of time?

They can say they’re confident all they want, but there’s so much out there on both sides that I’m not sure, biases aside, how anyone can be confident.

Non mandatory practices with current limits of 5 hours a week of on field work. Doesn’t sound like a preseason camp. The Columbus Day weekend games are 5 weeks away. Major breaking news would need to come out within the week. It’s all conjecture right now. About a month of full practices before games are played is just one objective note to monitor.

My opinion is there will be more to come on the back and forth. And due to paralysis by analysis, they will be fortunate to make the games in November.

With the semi final at the Rose and Sugar on Jan 1st, if the Big 10 played their championship 2 weeks prior (for a week break and xmas) on Dec 19th weekend, then if they don’t hit the 10/10/20 weekend start for a 10 game conference-only season with no bye weeks, again in 5 short weeks, then they will be playing in different bowls with the PAC 12 and not competing in Miami on Jan 11th for the 2020-2021 standard FBS national championship. Let the asterisk whining begin. It’s fun now to see them squirm but I foresee in the not too distant future this line of news as annoying.

I'm going to go out on a limb and say that FOOTBALL FACTORY NORTH (OSU) has been practicing conditioning and football for the last month. Why haven't we seen it? DUHHHH!!!! Oh the naivete.

I'm going to go out on another limb and say that FOOTBALL FACTORY NORTH has been negotiating with nonB1G teams to find October games if the B1G finally says yes, but not starting till November. OSU (Read $$$$) will find a way if there is one.

I'm easily wrong, but not about secret "illegal" practicing by powerhouses. (I once watched our WMU BBall coach just happening to be standing in the doorway of the student rec BBall courts while the team did drills (unofficially :=}} of course) and ran plays during scrimmages --- whoops, pick-up games. He knew me, so we talked. He "carefully" kept one foot always outside the line of the door --- smiling all the way.)

What's funny is that within 24 hours this guy apologized and retracted everything. This is a wild time to be alive.

Unbelievable. I saw it last night and just shook my head - the heat must have come down hot and heavy on him.

A little birdie told me that apparently the last day to request a refund for this semesters tuition was today. OSU was holding out until after the deadline before they ended on campus classes.

No way the Big10 is playing in October.

Holy shit this is WILD! I had said earlier that I assumed Michigan was a lock to want to play based on Harbaugh and the AD's comments and their donors expressing displeasure....

tenor.gif

A Little Birdie tells me University of Michigan President Mark Schlissel is one of the biggest remaining obstacles to the return of Big Ten football this fall. To the point he’s threatening to have Michigan sit out even if the Big Ten votes to go in October, denying the Big Ten its signature game.

That’s right, from what I’m told Schlissel is willing to weaponize the Michigan-Ohio State game as a threat to keep the Big Ten home this October, believing the league wouldn’t dare move forward without The Game. Thus losing hundreds of millions of dollars for member institutions while watching 76 other FBS teams play college football.

That’s why the protest tomorrow couldn’t be better timed, and needs to send a resounding message to Schlissel, especially with high school football now set to return in the state of Michigan. Will Jim Harbaugh himself show up at the protest? His clout may be needed here to send a message to his university president.

As an immunologist, Schlissel should be one of the most uniquely qualified presidents/chancellors to opine on playing this season, but he has offered no public specifics about his apparent concerns as the sport ramps up across the Big Ten footprint at the high school and pro level. Neither did he visit the football program one time this summer to see for himself how the players were being kept safe and honoring protocols, but he does appear willing to use the power of the Michigan football brand as leverage to suit his desires here.

Fuck Michigan

It would be awesome if OSU played and scUM didn't.

Everyone was chalking it up as an OSU win anyway.

I live in the heart of Buckeye country. I cant wait to ask my neighbors to come over to watch our favorite football teams.

It's going to be bizarre when the actual football games start with some teams sitting on the sideline.

Was there any basis to the Michigan/Whitmer rumors about them being the reason it was a no?

Also- anyone know any students who look like they are 35 that would sell me tix and their ID for Saturdays?

Good for BYU. Football is better when they are around.
