Recruiting decent pass rushing Defensive Ends and Cornerbacks all boils down to the same issue.

Regardless of the current/projected depth chart at either position, we are fighting an extreme uphill battle until we can prove that we can develop a pass rush. Finishing #118 last year in sacks and no better than #70 over the past four years is a huge concern.

If you are defensive end or a cornerback, would you have some reservations? If you are a coach from another team, how easy would it be to negatively recruit us?

A new defensive coordinator can signal hope. Some will buy in and some won't. Even though Oweh values academics, it's not enough to overcome the concern that they would have regarding development especially concerning how raw he is right now. Penn St. is deeply concerned that pOSU has the edge right now because "development" is the top priority and they have an edge with his potential position coach at pOSU, Larry Johnson.

FWIW Matt Freeman at ISD isn't worried about the pass rush this year. The worry is in stopping the run

Per the usual, Matt is stealing my thoughts. I made the comparison of Lamb to Anzalone before Jamie mentioned it too. ISD playing catch up to the Koon SMH.

"I'm completely torn.

Safety - I feel good at safety. We're young, but Studstill/Elliot are in their 2nd year, and Elko is personally coaching them. The fact that Nick Coleman has taken over FS has to be considered an improvement over Studstill, or it wouldn't happen.

Corner - I feel great. Everyone's back, and they played pretty decent towards the end of last year as basically true freshman. We have a lot of bodies and can afford an injury. Coleman coming back doesn't hurt either, although he's almost not needed, so anything from him is a bonus. Love our quality of depth.

Linebacker - I feel great. We have a stud MLB, a person molded for the Rover position in Tranquill, and I have no concerns about him picking up the defense. Coney is experienced, Bilal is athletic (although soft IMO), and Martini is a captain and a jack of all trades. I also have confidence in back up MLB Jonathan Jones. I feel really good about our top tier talent, and quality of depth at LB, where like CB, we can afford an injury.

DE - I feel good. Jay Hayes is going to be a solid SDE. Behind him, Kahlid Kareem has the body and a year's experience. I also think the freshman from Hawaii could play here if needed. At WDE, I also feel pretty good. Daelin Hayes has been shoulder-injury-free for what, 3 years now? And he has all of the talent and a year's experience. I think Trumbetti, even as a back-up, is a solid WDE. He's not a good starter, but he's a good backup, if that makes any sense. Ade also looked good in spring game I thought. And if we can get anything from Okwara, huge bonus, as he has the talent.

DT - I am very concerned, and this is not a spot you want to be concerned about. What I wouldn't give to have Scott Pagano at this point. We basically have Jerry Tillery as a proven starter, and he hasn't lived up to the expectations. We desperately needed Cage or Elijah Taylor to be healthy this year, and that is looking very unlikely. We're banking on Jonathan Bonner being a starter, and he'd be a quality #2 at best IMO. Behind them, we have no experience or elite talent. MDT has never played. Tiassum probably will never play (or at least should never play IMO). Mokwuah I do not expect to play. So we're banking on guys who should probably never play to be quality #2s at arguably the most important position on defense in CFB. This really puts a damper on my expectations for the defense. If we had just a healthy Cage and Scott Pagano, I'd put our defense at an A- level. I'm not even kidding.. As is, I think it's a B-. I think we'll get gashed on the run and 4-yard gains in the 4th quarter will make it easy for opponents to move the chains as our depleted DT depth wears down."

Koon you're postwhoring. You keep copying and pasting your same post from ISD on here. That must be at least the 3rd time you've done it that I've seen

It's the 2nd. And the posts are too good to not be shared. Quoting yourself is a power move.

This class also needs Harry to get two more roadgraders --- I trust him to do that (how can one not?) but they aren't in the house yet.

If you want to make a real power move, give yourself a name.

Am I the only one afraid of depth of MLB?

Depth as far as talent, total numbers or both? Here's the numbers:

5 Nyles Morgan 6-1 238 Sr.
45 Jonathan Jones 6-0 227 So.
44 Jamir Jones 6-3 243 So.
35 David Adams 6-1 225 Fr.

4 Te'von Coney 6-1 235 Jr. = Listed as #2 Buck. Mike capable.

2018 commits

Bo Bauer 6-2 220
Jack Lamb 6-4 220

Minor gripe, but when referring to Penn State and Ohio State in the same paragraph - and discussing a coach who has worked at both! - can we dispense with the pOSU business (what does pOSU even mean anyway?). It's confusing as hell. I had to read this sentence three times to figure out which school you were referring to when.

Rant over. Carry on.

Safety recruiting continues to baffle me.

Servite's Julius Irvin will OV for UGA. He currently has 2 CB's to Washington.

247 named ND the leader for San Jose's D'Angelo McKenzie yesterday on his timeline. He told ISD the same thing last month. All 5 of his CB's are to ND.

Mission Viejo's Chris Mitchell has 3 CB's, all to ND.

Paul Moala from Penn HS has 6 CB's, all 6 were for ND but Scout's Allen Trieu switched his to Foggy.

Avonta 'BJ' Crim from Florida (who doesn't officially have an offer) is visiting for the UGA game. He has 2 new CB's for ND and an old one from Andrew Ivins for UCF.

Loy and Ramos have CB'd all of them to ND (minus Irvin).

Loy's still sitting on a ND CB for PA's Nasir Peoples, who's committed to Va Tech.

Gonna be interesting to watch this unfold.

If they landed NPF, I'd pass on Jones. Not impressed and next years class is loaded.

Griffith and Crim would be an amazing safety class with Allen and Moala, but where are the cornerbacks?

Give me:

NPF
Crim
Gordon
Keys
Wilson
Tremble

He's going on the impression Griffith would play CB. Opinions are split are whether Griffith plays safety or corner. But I definitely want Gordon in this class. My six would be Gordon, Griffith, NPF, Wilson, Tremble and Keys/St. Brown (longshot). I'd have Jones on speed dial in case NPF doesn't come.

The last month of the 17 recruiting class was hectic

We may see that again in 18, except instead of high 3 stars, we get high 4 stars, especially if we win a decent bowl game.

It will be nice not having to worry about losing guys once they sign in December, but its also going to make me obsessively check the profile for any commit that doesn't.

With or without Griffith id like to see 1 true corner in this class. 2 tweener corners after a year of zero could really damage future depth. But if we miss on Gordon who else would it be. The CAB net cast was small and the returns scarce.

Would be beyond pumped if Houston flips and turns out to be true CB.

I’m surprised Tremble has not committed already. Is it because ND is holding off. He doesn’t seem as valuable an asset as others we might pick up.

New from Wiltfong:

ND really wants two more OT's- NPF and Luke Jones

Bracy or Gordon at CB

Griffith at Safety

One more top LB- Payton Wilson

Tommy Tremble

One big play WR- The surprising name mentioned was Tommy Bush. Had previously told ND he wasn't interested. Seems like he's had a chamge of heart and a visit is possible. Keys and Amon still in play obviously.

With coaching changes kids seem to like the shiny new toy or shiny new coach, any potential scenario we lose anyone or momentum on anyone with a hiring change somewhere else?

That usually doesn't occur until the next recruiting class. Right now it's about established relationships. Especially this year because of the early signing day on December 20.

Word from Loy and Kevin are if ND lands Griffith and Gordon they will pass on Bracy and Crim and be done with recruiting in the secondary. Also coaching staff is putting the full court press on Payton Wilson.
