Patterson is 100% redshirting and for the playoffs they have Julian Okwara, Khalid Kareem, Daelin Hayes, Adetokunbo Ogundeji, and Jamir Jones playing ahead of Justin Ademilola. Should be enough to avoid burning a year of eligibility.

Very surprised at some of these. Derrek Allen for starters. I thought he would get more burn this year. Also surprised the Bracy and Moala got as much PT as they did as well.

Pretty amazed how the staff was able to reserve most of the Freshman an extra year, where in years past you saw a lot more freshman usually playing, I think he it pay down the road with some of these guys getting an extra year.

Most, I would guess, would be at places other than ND if the recruiting machine keeps up. The good/great players are always going to be gone in 3/4 years. While I agree redshirting is important and can be an example of a healthy program, will ND ever take back ten 5th years in a class? The other 75 scholarships would therefore average less than 19 players in each of the 4 undergraduate classes.

I don’t know the answer but it is interesting how this redshirt rule will affect the landscape of college football rosters. ND isn’t the only program stashing away talent. I just have a feeling the free agency prior to the 2022 season will be different.

The benefit for ND is there will clearly be options. The dance to be close to 85 year in and year out SHOULD be easier (if such a thing is possible at ND with majority of players distance from South Bend, playing time, lack of juco transfers, grad school acceptance vs earning undergrad degree in 5 years, roster attrition with grades and discipline and culture fit, etc).

I like the new RS rule. It benefits most teams when they have games like we had with Ball St. Get it and get your feet wet.

I got the sense that our coaches realized early on (if not when we were recruiting him) that Allen wasn’t going to be a safety at this level. Maybe they’re waiting for him to figure that out before moving him down to Rover.

Micah Dew-Treadway, Asmar Bilal, Shaun Crawford and Chris Finke? I'd suspect both Alize Mack and Miles Boykin will test the "NFL waters". Wimbush I would assume to look for a new "home" with a legit chance to start at QB. Trevor Ruhland??

Why do people think Boykin will leave? He will not get drafted high. I feel like EQ made mistake by not staying another year.

He definitely did. but his brother didn't even want to come here bc mommy and daddy are investing their futures in the league. Understandable only to a certain extent.

Because some reporters have intimated Boykin may jump. I don't know if it's something Boykin said, hinted at or knowledge inside the program.

I think they are complete opposite situations. With ESB it was about declining production and effort. The first most due to lack of effort, at least some thought. Didn't finish routes, didn't block well, etc. A perception that he could change ,on the field, with more collegiate reps. He was going to run well, jump well, etc. regardless of when we went.

n Boykin's case, he's a max effort guy that is who he is. He isn't getting faster, or significantly quicker. He runs good routes for his athletic skillset. He already blocks well. Whether he has 1200 or 2200 career yds. doesn't change what he is. Therefore I doubt his draft stock changes all that much.

I think Boykin can raise his stock up next year if he comes back. Probably not 5th overall like Corey Davis, but he can definitely come back, put on a clinic with Book for a full year and be a 2nd or 3rd round pick. Right now, I see him being closer to a 5th, barring massive games in the Playoffs.

Which brings up another point: if players have monster games in the playoffs, and especially if the team does well, we'll see more guys leave early than we'd think. If Coney had balled out in the Rose Bowl during the playoffs last year instead of the Citrus Bowl, he'd have much more hype and probably would have left.

I dunno. I tend to prefer the good players play for us rather than some NFL team I don't care about.

Boykin's an interesting case. He's a good football player and physically mature, not going to get bigger/faster/stronger. But right now he's also probably not a particularly high draft pick. Like Lucci said, he is who he is.
I'd love him to come back, because he's good I think senior leadership is valuable. But I'd understand if he packed up for the NFL. Losing both him and Claypool would hurt though.

Otherwise, I'd figure Finke, Ruhland and Crawford come back. Wimbush and Mack are gone. Dew-Treadway if he wants and there's room, but whatever.

We have a bunch of playmakers waiting to get their shot but few of them have the size and know how to use it like Myles. He’s not going imo I th8nk Love has another year but he goes in the second round. Sounds like we still have a squad full of studs left. How the LB position plays out will be interesting. I think both of your are correct. Boykin is not going to personally improve a lot with another year, but his name brand and stats might improve enough just by having more games with Book. Not sure if the stock increase from waiting another year will make up for not getting paid a year earlier. I think it really comes down to what he wants to do, and how much he enjoys ND after having a more accurate QB.

Mack - Everyone says he's going NFL (as do I), but I think he'd do better staying another year.

Finke - Unless Bill B. calls him and tells him he has a spot, he'll be back.

Boykin - Toss up for NFL

Ruhland - gut says he'll transfer

MDT - gut says he'll transfer

Bilal - think he'll stay

Crawford - Other than him retiring from FB, he'll be back

over/under 3.5

right now we're 8 over, with likely one, and maybe two still potential commits. So let's say we're 9 over.
If we assume 3 5th years stay and 5 leave, that leaves a -4

I think Claypool stays. He's a true junior, but I don't see going anywhere. I could however see McKinley possibly transfer, but hope he does not.

Not from ND folks, but saw him on a couple draft boards. So who knows.
Walter Football - same outfit that was pumping sunshine about ESB in the 2nd Round last year - has Claypool as the #11 WR in the draft and a second day pick. (Boykin doesn't make their top 40 WRs)

How does Boykin put on a clinic? What else can they do to increase his production? The answer is volume, but how do you do that? He can’t be moved around like a Will Fuller. You can’t put Boykin in the slot. You’re not going to all of a sudden include him in the screen game. Obviously there are reasons they don’t use him in these situations now. It’s not like he’s second fiddle to another target monster in this offense. He’s just not very versatile of a pass catcher. This isn’t convincing a high rd draft pick to come back because he’ll be a focal point of the offense. He’s a role player in an offense. Not much changes. Checkout the 2nd and 3rd rd picks from last year. He’d have similar to production to the bottom of that list and/or not match up athletically. In some cases, not even close.

Don’t get me wrong, he’s a good player to have and very glad he’s Irish. He’d be a solid contributor to the 19’ team. But I highly doubt it significantly changes how folks view him. Because nothing changes. Still the same player.
