Two best players in the draft but they aren't in need of guards and they have GOT to get a QB they can build around.

My inner Mike Mayock says go with "best available" and not risk blowing the first and fourth picks. They can likely snag a QB in Round 2 if they choose to.

How much worse can it get?

I suppose I just don’t feel like it is necessary to find the QB to build their team around with this draft pick. I don’t think any of the options are worth building a team around. They are also in a multi year rebuilding process that will offer ample opportunities in free agency, trades, later rounds of this draft and next year’s draft to find the guy worth building around. Picking a QB just because seems short sighted to me.

So, there is a lot of smoke about 4 QBs being taken in the first 5 picks. New proposal for you Browns fans:

If you can still pick your top QB at #1 but somebody comes in an offers to trade for your #4 pick. They offer to swap you first rounders and give you a first and third next year. This team would hypothetically be trading up from 10-17th spot.

Would you make that deal?

Again, it's imperative the Browns keep their draft capital high before they start winning. They will lose much of their draft placement equity built up from the abysmal past seasons. I'd make that trade in a heartbeat.

Not a Browns fan either but I'm pretty much with Rack Em on this in that it really matters who's available at 4 and who is the team you are trading with. For example, I probably wouldn't do it with the Packers, but it's significantly more enticing with the Cardinals. Those are two teams that could go in different directions next year. Therefore affecting those future picks.

I'm officially a Josh Rosen fan. I love that he'll actually call people out by name, and the only thing I'm surprised at is that he didn't go after David Shaw.

2018 NFL Draft: Building a Winner in Cleveland
https://athlonsports.com/nfl/nfl-draft-2018-building-winner-cleveland

This could be fun. Imagine Cleveland and Denver trading back. However, if Browns have chosen their QB with #1, QB-needy teams would know they can deal with Denver for less than #4 would cost. Would Dorsey pick a non-QB with #1 and fall back to 10-12 for a developmental QB - or Day 3?

Report: Three NFL teams have called Broncos about draft trade
The Miami Dolphins, Buffalo Bills and Arizona Cardinals are interested in the No. 5 overall pick.

It's fair. I looked at the draft pick value boards to make that scenario. It looks like you'd at minimum break even (if you swapped with a team that ended up with 11+ wins the following year) and if you traded with a team that's likely in the middle of the pack, you'd come out ahead by as much 400-600 pts, which is no small win.

NFL Draft - Teams picks.
https://www.nfl.com/draft/tracker/teams

Miami has one pick in each of Rounds 1-3
Arizona his one pick in each of Rounds 1-2 and two in Round 3
Buffalo has two picks in each of Rounds 1-3

Cleveland has two picks in Round 1, three in Round 2, none in Round 3.
Browns trade back with either with Arizona or Miami and get their 2s too, they move up into late Round 1.

It got this worse because of the ‘get the guy later’ thinking like your first paragraph. Get the guy and be done already... they can then get the ‘best available ’ with four...I love this, all the Browns can’t develop peps now wanting us to continue reaching on leftovers...

Actually I think Lax could be referring the saga between them during his recruitment. (correct if I'm wrong here)

When Rosen was being recruited, he camped at Stanford (maybe even more than once), in hopes of getting an offer. Essentially, Shaw thought he was an entitled young man with character issues and didn't want him playing for him. So, he told Rosen such and it started getting around. I don't believe either party has commented on this but it seemed pretty obvious, hence no Stanford offer to a top QB who really wanted one.

Meanwhile Stanford went on to win a bunch of games and Rosen had a rather unspectacular career with no major wins (correct me if I’m wrong), tons of injuries and still the douchiest personality in the draft.

Yup, and it was well known at the time that Rosen was PISSED because Stanford was his intended destination. Shaw not only told him to get lost, but offered... you guessed it... Ricky Town. The Cardinal ended up not taking a QB in the 2015 class if memory serves me correctly... literally passed on a QB rather than take Rosen because of how much Shaw disliked his attitude/personality.

As much as we dislike Shaw, I'll toast him on that one.

Mike Mayock's 2018 NFL mock draft: Bills trade up for Josh Allen - NFL.com

Q to Denver at 5. Big Mike to Raiders at 10. Indy trades their sixth to Buffalo for the Bills' 12th and 22nd.

Not sure if the Colts will trade down again, but I've seen several mock drafts that have them trading with the Bills. Ballard is very tight lipped, so if this does happen, it probably won't be until the last minute. He's in a win win position right now and can demand more than the norm. It all depends on how nervous/desperate the Bills or another team get. No one meets his demands, he picks Q.

This would be a very Cleveland pick

I like it. Mayfield is more complete as a QB than any of the other guys IMO.

Read on ESPN that the rumors of the Browns going with Mayfield is just a smoke screen.

If its not Mayfield Ill be upset.
Darnold gets the yips and likes to put it on the ground, Allen couldn't hit water if her fell out of a boat, and Rosen is a head case.

Does the QB make the team or the team make the QB? I think the latter counts more than people are giving credit. Luck isn't making Indy a contender - they are a train wreck, and nobody in this draft is anywhere close to Andrew Luck. Just b/c Wentz worked out (so far) for Philly doesn't mean the next guy is Wentz.

I’ve been on this train forever, I’ve gotten into it with posters here on this point, the team makes the team, not one guy under center. Even with that said at some point you need a decent QB... and I think my Browns are a lot closer than many think, get your guy now.

Anyway, these current rumors better just be noise,... if they take Baker or Josh and trade away four... I’ll be beside myself like I was when they drafted Weeden or the Gilbert/JFF draft... this franchise can not afford another project fail, get the surest bet and I think everyone agrees that’s Rosen or Darnold. Then with four you are guaranteed the second best non QB at worst, TAKE IT...

Darnold, Chubb, trade back up for Mike and get Penny at running back later....... that would be a grand slam imo.

Wouldn't totally surprise me, but it would seem pretty stupid. So you win the QB lottery by doing that, but you undermine the kid right from the start and his ability to lead the team.

Brilliant.
