According to ISD, Hiestand wants Bars at RT, which leaves the RG competition to Bivin and McGovern.

I know Hoge is 2nd at Center, but is he in the competition still at RG?

EDIT: Answered in another thread nvm

Did he have gloves on? It looked like it, but couldn't tell for sure. Only reason I ask is b/c I thought he was going with the no glove look earlier in camp.....or was that someone else?

In the first video, it looked like he was going gloveless in solo drills but wearing them in scrimmages and drills with the DBs. Could have just left them at home that morning though.

regarding the qb competition

regarding the qb competition

“If we’re being 100 percent honest, it’s the typical deal,” Sanford said Monday. “It’s ebbs and flows. There are days where certain guys have a strong day, even kind of in waves, too.”

“The way it works is actually even within a day there are various drills where there’s a guy who’s one. So if you guys come to the first 45 minutes of practice, you might not see the whole picture. It might be your day to work (with the first-team offense) when it’s a full unit, 11-on-11 period. …But that means that in 7-on-7 and skell and stuff of that nature, half-line pass, you’re going to be working with the second group.”

What’s good is that we have the opportunity to talk through what the issues were and it creates a good dialogue which is what we want,” he said. “We want them to internalize the information and the why, which has been really positive. That’s what I love about working with coach Kelly…he really promotes that type of dialogue with the quarterbacks. He’s a guy that’s not every single time, it’s, ‘That’s wrong. You’re wrong. You’re dead wrong. Let’s move on.’ It’s, ‘You’re wrong. This is why you’re wrong.’ And that works really well with myself, coach Kelly and that group in particular.”

“To say that we’re going to really give any kind of huge, big-picture feedback right after spring ball, it’s premature to say that right now,” he said. “We’re still caught up in the process of each and every day. Obviously that will be something that we talk about as an offensive staff and take in a lot of input on that from each one of the offensive assistant coaches, and most importantly from coach Kelly, and I’ll guide that with the data that I’ve come up with and then we’ll find out what’s the best course of action to proceed forward with the offseason.”

“Probably the surprising thing for me is how quickly Malik got off to a good start in terms of the first few days of practice dating back to three weeks ago,” Sanford said. “There wasn’t quite the rust early on that we all anticipated. He did a nice job of coming back and playing the game, playing football the way that he had left off and I think now it’s…with him it’s all about simplifying it, making the game easy, letting the game come to him, because he can do some great things when the game is right.”

How are people trying to read that video as a negative thing? Maybe he has that much confidence in himself that he trust the one-hand catch (to allow himself to still turn up field) over twisting his body to get two hands around. Maybe he said "eff it I'm going to go for broke to impress the coaches here" and just went for it. Who the hell knows what the practice situation was? Maybe it was 3rd and very long and losing all momentum to secure a 2-hand catch was going to mean no chance to pick up the 1st down? Seems weird to critique a kid off of one play.

“I tried to absorb anything and everything they said,” Morgan said. “We’d be in meeting rooms and Joe would be right here (looking to immediate left), I’d be like, ‘Joe, what does this mean?’ Jay would be over there, I’d be like, ‘Jay, Jay, did I run it?’

“I tried to get as much as I could from them because I knew everything they said was beneficial.”

“Playing Mike (linebacker), you have to be confident,” Morgan said. “If you ain’t, the game’s going to get ugly.”

“The fact that he runs out there and he knows he’s the guy and he’s driving it, and he’s running it, and he’s the alpha dog there, then that’s where I think we’ve seen a difference in his confidence and his ability to go out there and not look over his shoulder and get thrown out because he had a mental error,” said linebacker coach Mike Elston. “He knows he’s the guy. He knows he has to get it right and he has to spend extra time on it, so I think that’s the biggest key for it, is the confidence.”
“Joe Schmidt was a smart player,” said coach Brian Kelly. “A heady player. But he wasn’t the most physically gifted player that we had. Nyles Morgan is a tough, physical football player, and so what we’ve asked him to do is to be himself.

“You’re not Joe Schmidt, but he’s doing a great job of getting us lined up. Now that you’ve got that and that’s not an issue in front of him, be who you are, and he’s a physically tough player. We want that personality to come out, and if that does, you’ll bring others around you and that toughness will start to show itself.”

“It’s like having the keys to the kingdom,” Morgan said. “If it’s yours, it’s yours. You can own it. Take hold of it. And then from there it’s just keep climbing.”

wish BVG and kelly would watch the 85 bears 30 for 30. They should see how Buddy Ryan's D all came together when he cut the playbook in half.

What we are doing is truly the definition of insanity!

I am more interested in seeing Cage in downfield coverage. That's where BVG shines the most.

Don't be ridiculous....everyone knows it'll be Tillery in coverage.

Guys this is BVG we're talking about, the mad scientist himself. Its obviously gong
to be Mokwuah and Montelus playing deep in the cover 2.

I'm still hoping BVG comes to realize Diaco's dream and implement the "CAT Attack" defense that Bobby was recruiting for years ago. 9 CAT LBs on the field and 2 DBs, it was going to be deadly...one way or the other.

We'd know after a series whether it was genius or insanity. Meow!

Agree. Had one of the best players in program history and he had like 3 sacks in 3 years. WTF?

Practice

Direct Snap: Practice Notes 4/6
Author: Matt Freeman
April 6, 2016
Third Eye Blind started the 10th spring practice off for the Notre Dame football team as the Irish practiced inside today with the rainy South Bend weather. The media viewed the first 6 periods of practice and here are some quick notes and thoughts.
Practice started off with some special teams work and it was time for Justin Yoon, Montgomery VanGorder and Scott Daly to get some work.
Yoon hit his first two field goals, but then missed his next three from various spots on the field. VanGorder was the new holder during the misses, but Yoon was good from around 50 yards on his last attempt of the morning.
The offense then broke into the tempo drill as they do to start every practice and this is what the first and second team offense looked like on Wednesday morning.

First Team
QB: DeShone Kizer
RB: Tarean Folston/Josh Adams
WR: Equanimeous St. Brown
WR: Torii Hunter Jr.
WR: Corey Holmes
TE: Durham Smythe
OL: Mike McGlinchey
OL: Quenton Nelson
OL: Sam Mustipher
OL: Hunter Bivin
OL: Alex Bars

Second Team

QB: Malik Zaire
RB: Dexter Williams/Justin Brent
WR: Miles Boykin
WR: Kevin Stepherson
WR: Chris Finke
TE: Alizé Jones
OL: Jimmy Byrne
OL: Trevor Ruhland
OL: Tristen Hoge
OL: Mark Harrell
OL: Colin McGovern

Brandon Wimbush was working with the third-team offense, which is comprised of mostly walk-ons at this point in the spring.

When the defense broke into some team drills, the starting linebackers were James Onwualu and Nyles Morgan in the nickel package. Cole Luke and Nick Coleman were the cornerbacks, while Devin Studstill and Drue Tranquill were the safeties and Shaun Crawford was the nickel. The second team defensive backfield was Devin Butler and Ashton White at corner, Avery Sebastian and Max Redfield at safety and Cole Luke moved inside to play the nickel.
The defensive line started their day with typical position work. Doug Randolph, a student assistant, was see working with early enrollee Daelin Hayes after a few reps giving him advice on firing out of his stance. Rush end Jay Hayes and defensive tackle John Montelus both received praise from position coach Keith Gilmore during pass rush drills this morning.

Defensive GA Harland Bower was the most vocal we had seen him at a practice today. He has a loud, but positive style when getting after kids. He doesn’t seem to tear down the kids, but his voice commands attention when he gets after his players.

The defensive backfield worked on their releases off the line of scrimmage, while the linebackers worked on bumping their guy and releasing him into a zone.

The final drill we got to see on Wednesday was the receivers competing again the defensive backs to try and get to the pylon. The defensive backs were trying to get the guy to the sideline or turn him inside, while the receivers were trying to score.

Defensive backs coach Todd Lyght showed some real emotion when Coleman didn’t take the proper angle and again when Studstill whiffed.
“You gotta do better, son” and “You gotta be better” were two phrases Lyght used multiple times during the drill.

Nicco Fertitta had the hit of the day, when he completely knocked off Corey Holmes helmet during the drill. Butler earned praise from his position coach on the day when he made a nice play on the sideline.

Notes:
– Greer Martini and Tevon Coney were in helmets, but did not participate in drills
– 2017 Concord (Ind.) WR Cedric Mitchell was observing practice this morning.
