It is starting to get a little pathetic how often this team gives up double digit leads. They're messing with fire and they will eventually get burned. Is it coaching? Do the players lack a killer instinct? These players are being congratulated for "tough" and "gritty" wins when in reality, they just fail to put teams away. I'm happy they won, but it almost feels like they lost.

lol wut

This team has trouble holding onto double digit leads, but they are clutch down the stretch in these first 5 ACC games.

That's apparently not enough for some on here. It's not good enough that a team is drastically overperforming expectations and is 5-0 atop the hardest conference in basketball despite mediocre talent. No, we aren't winning pretty enough or something. Good grief.

I'll never understand those fans. I guess my view is to enjoy the ride while it here instead of looking ahead to what could or could not happen.

#1 in the ACC, who would have thought that before the season? Not many, as usual. But it's here and it's fun.

Playing with house money at this point.

It's unbelievable the frequency this team opens up such large leads that their opponents, good teams mind you, can't dig themselves out of.

This team is good enough to open up big leads on anybody in the country and good enough to hold onto the lead against anybody on any given night... but not everybody, every night.

Team can be frustrating at times but they are money at the end of games. Farrell, Vasturia and the rest show some serious stones. Fun to watch and happy they are going to go 2-1 at least on this trip.

Some of you guys are acting like this is the Football regular season thread. Man are you that insufferable that you can't enjoy what is turning out to be surprisingly awesome season? 16-2 right now!! Just beat a very solid VTech team who had wins over Duke and Michigan already. Go Irish baby, this has been the most enjoying Irish season, regardless of sport, in years.

That's what happens when you're on a board for a program that has been more success deprived than practically any major football program in the last 25 years. Skepticism and sarcasm will always be lurking around the corner.

I think Torres should be starting over Geben.

I was thinking the same thing. Geben gives us nothing when hes out there. The thing I think brey likes about Torres is that he gives us a spark off the bench. Wpuld he be able to give us a spark when he's starting? Maybe but idk.

Also a great win today for us. We shot the worst we have all year from the FT line. I hate coming onto this board and seeing some complaining about a win. A win on the road in the toughest conference. A win against a team that was just ranked 21st last week.

I cant imagine how tired this group is. We played at Miami Thursday till 9pm and then have to do a one day turnaround and have to play today at 2pm. This team was gassed and you could tell how sluggish they were the second half.

I think its a great win. We are 16-2 and 5-0 in the ACC. Never would have guessed that. If we arent in the top 10 this week then the pollsters are A holes. If we aren't ahead of Louisville and duke I'm gonna be really pissed.

In the past 25 years according to Stassen.com ND has 16 fewer wins than both Alabama and Texas.

That might be a bit skewed, since Alabama had to vacate all their wins from the 05-07 seasons.

Vacating wins seems to fit well within your chosen term, "success deprived ".

Now can we get back to round ball in this thread?

Team continues to surprise me. I thought the three game road stretch would be successful with one win, but they already have two. FSU will be a huge match up problem, but that hadn't stopped Brey in the past. After today and Miami, I think Gibbs has shown he can produce and is strong enough to spell MF a few times each game. While MF had made some great plays down the stretch against Miami and VT, he looked tired at times.

For those complaining about grinding out road wins...

They already have been - twice - but that's really irrelevant.

Basketball is a game of runs, and the way this team is configured it's not set up for consistent offense or defense (because of rebounding) for an entire game.

"Blowing leads" can just as easily be rephrased "consistently doing a good job of executing offense in the first half and then managing end game situations well."

Are you serious?

When I say "killer instinct", I mean putting teams away for good when it is obvious that there is blood in the water. I haven't seen them do that to a good team yet. They have a "killer instinct" when guys like Vasturia, Farrell, and Colson when they hit very clutch shots. But thats not what I was talking about.

RPI #17, SOS #47

Kenpom: #22
Sagarin: #22

Not bad. Would go way up with a win at FSU. Also like I said before we should be a top 10 team this week but obviously we won't.

Checked CBS sports bracketology and they have us a 3 seed and that was on Friday so a little different then joe lunardi's bracket

I don't get why people continue to nit pick and critique the basketball program. Every single season this team is projected to finish in the lower half of the league, both while they were in the big east and the acc. Yet every year this team is competing and making the tournament. What Brey is able to do with the limited skill set of his players is pretty impressive. My feeling towards the basketball team is completely different than the football program. There isn't a game that I don't feel confident that this team has a chance to win whether it is Boston college or Kentucky. I haven felt that way about the football team in my entire life. Maybe Kelly should sit down and talk with brey about how he motivates his players and develops them.

In college basketball teams make runs and rarely stay down big, especially average to good teams playing at home. Toughness in college basketball is being able to withstand these runs on the road and hang on for close wins. The Irish have that.

I'm still confused about why we don't have a star lineup of basketball players. We're in a basketball-crazed state, within an afternoon's drive of several major metros. There have got to be more than a handful of amazing basketball players who aren't interested in one-and-doneing it, right?

It's a combination of academics, facilities, and fan support. Two of those things, JS can fix relatively easier.

Student athletes have a ton of time go for an afternoon drive to Indy/Chicago. It's especially great in those cities in the winter.

No idea what would drive kids elsewhere. I'm sure better weather, women, academics (easier), and actual fan supporter that doesn't follow their team casually while only really caring on solely football, wouldn't make a difference at all.

No idea why people aren't jumping on ship. No idea why guys like Demetrius, Temple, and Harvey aren't coming to ND.

Fire Brey. Fire Swarbrick. Hire Gene Hackman.

I wish you guys could have seen the ACC in the 70's and early 80's. Weekday and Sunday games on NBC were crazy. The only place I ever watched a game that was as loud as my high school.

The distance to those cities was referenced in terms of our proximity to talent, not in terms of recreation for athletes. Thought that was obvious.

Weather doesn't seem to matter to the players at Syracuse, or MSU, or Ohio State. If you count St. Mary's, and you should, our m/f ratio is actually pretty favorable.

I wasn't making the point that we should have broad appeal, like Indiana, Kentucky or Florida, but that we should be able to attract at least a few excellent players. I would be fine with Duke's cast-offs.
