I haven't heard anyone mention Deeb or Randolph in practices. Are we losing either one to transfers? I keep looking at the roster and we must know of possible defections if Kelly is speaking so glowingly of 5th year players. The only one on the fence appears to be Hounshell.

I haven't heard anything on that, and, just based on what I know about those kids from their recruitments, I doubt they leave. They each struck me as the type of kid who picks ND for the school and the education. Randolph went to elite prep schools and comes from a family educated at elite schools (a lot of doctors in the family, I think?) and if he were to transfer it would be to another high-academics high-grad-rate school, but I don't see him going anywhere. Deeb struck me as a kid who just bought into the ND experience and the value of the ND degree; I doubt he transfers unless there are circumstances I don't know about like homesickness.

Of course, both kids are Diaco-era recruits, so if you look at it from that perspective a transfer wouldn't stun me.

And just to be totally clear, this is all totally baseless speculation, btw.

He certainly has considering Nolan was unavailable all spring until that video. I've never seen a group of guys pick apart a volunteer trying to learn a trade so much as people on here dogging Jac. He's a Notre Dame student who put himself out there to pursue his future career. He filled a void by volunteering his time to the coverage of this team.

But i'm sure everyone on here was perfect at their jobs immediately... so blast away, I suppose...

I haven't said shit about him, let alone been all over him. I thought what he said was funny, even if everyone knows what he meant.

I just don't get why every time the kid slips up on a word or stumbles, everyone suddenly has to get on him about it. He's a freaking volunteer and a Notre Dame student.

Btw, your comment was pretty tame compared to others. But I still think we should cut the kid some slack.

I actually think he's done a fairly good job. Especially for a student filling in. I'd take him over a large portion or regular sports reporters.

Hes gotten so much better from video to video. Could tell he was obviously nervous the first couple of times. Maybe tried doing to much. Not an easy task to do

It also wouldn't shock me to hear that Deeb just loves football; he could easily transfer to one of the Florida schools.

And young Collinsworth is doing a great job, IMO. He tries to be himself, rather than overly scripted, which leads to a few gaffes. That's not a big deal. I like that he clearly thinks his Dad is the standard.

Also, if Randolph wanted a better shot to play, he could transfer to second-choice, UVA, which has an excellent academic reputation and is closer to his fmaily. Heck, he could transfer to Duke.

But I'm with you, I expect both to stay.

Don't take the following as bashing Jac being acceptable, but if this is truly what he wants to do (and I'm assuming it is given his last name and his work this spring) he's going to have haters on his twitter his entire career. The sooner he gets a taste and moves on from it the better.

Hopefully it motivates him to hone his craft and land a nice gig.

@TevonConey: ND18 or ND19

Time for the redshirt / transfer freakout watch?

Seems to me like he is trying to decide whether he wants to graduate in 3 years or 4.. Not sure how you can take this in a bad way (not saying you are).

But yeah - football players seem to be excellent cryptic tweeters.

Listened to Power Hour on my way into work today. Mike flew solo and basically answered questions from ISD customers. He talked about the spring scrimmage as well.

-He likes where ND is for Liam and expects that landing him may help with Bredeson (as the staff is pitching Liam, Tommy, and Ben as a Big Three). Said the staff will take a 4th if it's the right guy.

-Loves how the OL have been playing. Singled out how great the two-deep is and how great Stanley's spring has been.

-Loves where Redfield and Shumate are compared to last year. Linebacker is a position group he talked a lot about. Speculation as to how that shakes out. Still concerned with the seemingly lack of a pass rush. Hopefully it's not an issue come the fall as Mike loves the back seven on defense. He did mention that BVG has been annoyed with the lack of cohesiveness as he's still dealing with injured players and absent players.

-Touched on how CJ is shocking everyone at RB and how well Amir is playing in the slot. Did mention that regardless, there will be enough touches for GB (so don't worry about him).

-Someone asked if Wimbush and Kizer could pass Malik next year and he said it's possible but unlikely. EG and MZ are taking almost all of the reps, so Malik will be way ahead of both of the two younger guys.

-Briefly touched on the scholarship numbers, but to refrain from too much negative speculation, he didn't go into specifics. Basically, ND is +3. He mentioned Hounshell as a guy who could be an odd man out. Huerman's name got brought up. Baratti could go on medical. Things like that. Almost always safe to assume at least one transfer once spring practice ends. Bottom line, it'll get worked out.

Overall, not a crazy exciting Power Hour. Always a good listen though. Anyone feel free to add things I may have forgotten. Looking forward to wrapping up spring practice w/ a fun BG game and no injuries.

Yeah, haven't heard much about Coney recently. Still think he has a good chance at some PT this year.

Unless the LB corp falls apart, don't see how that happens (assuming both Grace and Schmidt are back).

Grace and Schmidt are both middle linebackers by profile. As is Nyles Morgan. Are all three cross training? We have Jaylon everywhere and he's been teaching Coney his position (Will?). If Coney moves into 2nd string behind Jaylon, there is almost a guarantee that he'll see playing time this year (mop up time or to give Jaylon a breather).

This is what we should prefer as Jaylon could bolt after this year. I don't expect it necessarily but I don't see how he isn't a 1st round pick (assuming no injuries).

Which means if we are fortunate with our health, we could have 3 - 1st rounders in 2016 draft: Stanley, Smith and Keivarae (plus Sheldon Day, Shumate, Brown who could find themselves day two selections or better).

Okwara could make a training camp or be a late day selection.

Before he gets too critical of one of his players, defensive line coach Keith Gilmore pauses.

Sophomore Andrew Trumbetti will be one of the underclassmen contributors this fall on Notre Dame's defensive line. (Photo: Kirby Lee , USA TODAY Sports)
Rising sophomore defensive end Grant Blankenship needs to add weight. He needs to understand the playbook better, as someone who saw action in 11 games last fall.

But at the end of the day, Gilmore knows he isn’t discussing a two-year starter’s lack of progression. Blankenship graduated from high school less than a year ago. There is still plenty of time for the Texas native to develop into the defensive end the coaches want him to.

The fact Gilmore needs to address Blankenship’s progression in his first spring practice highlights a lack of depth at defensive line.

“Grant’s got to get a little more bulk,” Gilmore said. “He’s got to get a little bit more serious about the game and in his playbook, but I have to keep reminding myself these guys are freshmen. You really shouldn’t even be talking about him like this at this point.

“They should be on the backburner and you say, ‘Hey, they play when we’re killing somebody in cleanup duty.’ But unfortunately we’ve got to coach them so they’re ready to play.”

The sophomore-to-be should continue to find his way into the rotation this fall. Gilmore’s goal is to have 10 defensive linemen ready to play. And considering only four of the 17 defensive linemen on this fall’s roster have played for two or more years, plenty of underclassmen will find themselves on the field.

“Even if it’s four or five plays a game, everybody that travels with me and prepares during the week, I’m going to get them in the football game,” Gilmore said.

One sophomore who will more than likely see as much, if not more of the field than his fellow underclassmen, is Andrew Trumbetti.

The defensive end notched 21 tackles in 12 appearances last fall. His spring may not follow as steep an upward trend as expected—he missed a few practices earlier this spring with the flu and has cross-trained behind Isaac Rochell on the strong side when classmate Jonathan Bonner went down with an injury.

“(The transition) slowed him a little bit, just because of the learning part of it,” said Gilmore. “But he’s playing hard, he’s playing physical, and he’ll be a guy that is right in there, not a starter. He’ll be in the rotation every week.”

Early enrollees Jerry Tillery and Micah Dew-Treadway figure in as the freshmen likely to see the field in some capacity. And Trumbetti’s classmate, Bonner, will be in the mix as well.

Bonner redshirted last fall but has shown phenomenal physical abilities, according to Irish head coach Brian Kelly. His struggles centered on understanding the team’s defensive concepts, a deficiency that kept him off the field.

Shortly after the light bulb went on in Bonner’s head this spring, he suffered a foot injury that will keep him out until June.

“He was really coming along,” said Gilmore. “I was really excited about him. It was unfortunate because he was, I mean he was a guy that opened my eyes. I was like, ‘Woah, this guy’s got a chance.’

“And then you get a couple, two, three days out of him and then he screwed his foot up, so hopefully he gets back and gets healthy and is going to pick up where he left off. I’m going to keep coaching him and if he recovers he’ll be fine and he’ll be able to help us and contribute.”

A sophomore who has shown a similar pattern of progression this spring is Jay Hayes, a defensive tackle who added 10 pounds to his 6-foot-3 frame during offseason workouts.

“I think here toward the end of spring that he’s started to play pretty well where he’s finally coming off the ball with great intensity and doing some of those things,” Gilmore said of Hayes.

Not every player develops at the same rate, and Gilmore has one such case at defensive line in Jhonny Williams. In addition to learning the playbook, Williams needs to improve his technique.

If he’s able to, Gilmore sees him as a contributor on the defensive line. But first, the Irish’s coaching staff needs to see a change in how he plays.

“He plays like an athlete, like a basketball player,” Gilmore said. “You juke around, and play high, and that sort of thing, instead of just learning how to come off the football and playing with great pad level and just being a real football player, as opposed to just an athlete playing football.”

So Kolin Hill isn't playing DE? Still a LB? I've got to say, one of the most disappointing things to me is that he isn't getting hyped as a pass rush specialist. I've seen little-to-no press on him and I really thought he'd be a factor.
