Notre Dame's newest football player is arriving as a four-year veteran of the lacrosse team -- not a high school football standout.
Defensive tackle Jarron Jones tweeted that Nick Ossello, a senior midfielder on the Irish men's lacrosse team, is joining the Irish football team. A request for confirmation was not immediately returned by a Notre Dame official.
Ossello started 14 games for the Irish as a senior. The Wheat Ridge, Colo., native scored 23 goals and dished out six assists before the Irish fell in the NCAA tournament semifinals to Denver. Ossello hasn't been part of the Notre Dame football team before but spent time on the gridiron in high school. The former defensive back earned all-state, all-city and all-conference honors as a senior at Wheat Ridge (Colo.) High School, , according to Notre Dame's athletics website. He was team MVP and a team captain in his senior year.
Wheat Ridge also won a state title his sophomore season and he was a first-team All-Colorado defensive back.
