Are there any rules barring parents from paying their kids tuition so it doesn't count against the 85? It seems like a big loophole.

Its not a big loophole. You can attend any university you like if you pay your own way and qualify. You can also try out for any sports teams you like as well.

I'm guessing there's a difference because of his suspension. It wasn't just a revoked scholarship so we could offer someone else...he is actually re-applying to the school (isn't he?).

Anyone know better than I do?

I would guess, considering Coach's way of looking at athletes and commitment, that if it comes down to Williams vs Hounshell or Baratti, Ishaq is out. Coach doesn't like guys who aren't showing him seriousness in all phases of being a student athlete --- he will put up with it if the player is REALLY an asset [re: Golson, Daniels, perhaps now Brent] but he still doesn't like it.

My opinion: Coach has just recently made the intriguing statement about the team being better now that certain malcontents have graduated and/or transferred --- he seemed to be talking about mainly non-playing DBs but who knows? My guess also is that he's not "devastated" about Daniels being gone. If Ishaq, though apparently a good guy, has not pleased Kelly and BVG both classroom-wise [that part's certain] AND performance-wise [therefore poor practice example for younger layers --- and who knows there, but on-field production seems spotty even given the excuses], then there will be a "what's good for the football environment?" factor that comes into play.

Therefore, while hoping Ishaq is on the team and playing like an NFLer, I'm guessing that without some extraordinary developments, he will not be on the roster. However, people grow up even at the eleventh hour, so here's hoping.

The problem with Hounshell is that it would take reps away from someone else. If you need a 6th blocker, get one of the OLinemen in the game.

A couple things :

  • Kelly is sending strong signals that he thinks incoming freshmen with contribute day one.
  • If he keeps Hounshell, it may be for his locker room qualities, add to that battling back against injuries.
  • For the item above, see Jarrett Grace.
  • There is much Chase could do for the team, H-back, or simply be another wild card to throw in to keep other teams from predicting his tendencies as simply as they did in past seasons.

I'd imagine Hounshell's role will be just to provide depth on both sides of the ball where required ala Bruce Heggie aka Notre Dame man

Off current topic, but this roster is absolutely loaded. I mean how many future NFL draft picks are there? 15+? Even without Golson (who probably wouldn't be considered a draft pick by most), this team is still stacked, and should win 10+ games IF the injury bug doesn't rear it's ugly head for the third straight year and IF the offense protects Malik.

Coach Kelly, this is arguably the most talented and deep team you have ever coached. DO NOT screw this up.

I usually try to be "scientific {data-based}" at least about my "predictions", but this year I am not. In my ball-playing experiences [amateurish as they were], when a player was a hot-blooded Rolls Royce with a cold-blooded killer mental approach, you could just feel it wafting off him. I get that from Malik Zaire. I did not get that from Everett, or any previous QB as far back as Clausen. {It might have happened with Kiel}.

If we get no significant injuries specifically with Malik or in the DBackfield [I REALLY want Luke, Russell, Redfield, and Sebastian fully available every game], I think that this team is going to be feared.

My feelings are that we may have a few RR's entering in June, as well!

And with this team, the right kind of leadership is everything.

Agreed. Injuries, or the lack of, will make or break this year IMHO. We're pretty strong all over the place with the exception of DE questions (really just getting a rush on the QB). We have the type of OL and skill players that can help MZ along until he does come into his own as a passer. I think we will be pleasantly surprised with the passing game should teams try to load the box on us early.

If we were listing the most likely incoming freshmen to earn minutes, who would you choose?

My list would be:

Jerry Tillery (less speculation, almost a given at this point)
Alize Jones (is he dynamic enough to be put on the field for mismatches?)
Te'von Coney (can he learn enough to be a situational player?)
Dexter Williams (will he be good enough to earn ST or take a few carries?)
Shaun Crawford (can he be a nickel/dime corner or STer?)
Josh Barajas (will he be used on ST?)
CJ Sanders (Return man?)
Nicco Fertitta (ST player?)
Justin Yoon (day 1 starter for FGs?)

Do you think some of these guys should be struck from the list? Should anyone else be added?

This kid will be able to log minutes as a slot receiver from day one.

Any of ESB, Boykin, Barajas, Winbush, Guyton, Coleman, and Williams, may surprise!

Nick Ossello from the lacrosse team will apparently give football a go in the fall. He was an all-state player in high school.

I'm high on Sanders but if we're doing a lot of heavy sets and have a rotation at slot that includes Carlisle, Hunter, and Procise I don't know how many reps he'll realistically see.

Probably safety. He's 6'1" 185 and could obviously bulk up for football. He was a low-end DI football recruit coming out of HS who played kind of all over the place.

IF he makes it through fall camp it's unlikely he'd be more than a practice body.
