According to TJ34 on Rivals the target size for the 2014 class is 23. I think this would be a conservative/realistic view on how it shakes out:

QB: Kyle Allen, Brandon Dawkins
RB: Elijah Hood
WR: Justin Brent, Corey Holmes, Mark Andrews, Michiah Quick
TE: Nic Weishar, Tyler Luatua
OT: Quenton Nelson, Alex Bars
OG: Jimmy Byrne, Sam Mustipher, Braden Smith

DE: Andrew Trumbetti
DE/DT: Jay Hayes
NG: Joshua Frazier
CAT: Andrew Williams
ILB: Greer Martini, Nyles Morgan
CB: Nick Watkins
CB/S: Darius West
S: Juju Smith

I think a Best Available, a 2nd Defensive End (Nelson), a 2nd Running Back (Starks), a 5th Wide Reciever (Malone), a 2nd Defensive End/Defensive Tackle (Holley) are all options if the staff chooses not to take Dawkins.

Tried to fill the areas of needs w/ most likely at the moment.

I hope you are right, but I cannot see Frazier here.

Well at this point I'm sure the staff wants a NG and out of the three w/ offers (Clark, Frazier, and Curtis) he is the most likely so I put him in there

Unless we...

... switch to a 4-3! I honestly can't explain the lack of urgency over the past several classes for finding Nix's replacement any other way.

Based on ratings, this projected class is probably higher than last year, right? I don't think you're far off, but that front 7 would still leave us with some depth issues, correct? I would love to be a fly on the wall during the staff meetings. I don't envy them.

NG is the hardest position to recruit. Couple that with finding a RKG with the grades and desire to attend ND. I'm sure it's not for lack of effort.

Not to get off on a tangent about Vanderdoes, but I always hated that he was so adament about not wanting to play the 0 technique. His reaction to that question in interviews always rubbed me the wrong way. Then, on NSD, BK appears in his UND.com video (the only recruit video he appeared in) and one of the first things out of his mouth is how EV can play NG. My immediate reaction was 'EV got duped!'. I've heard others state this as his reason for friction with the staff, and others refute it, but to me it's the only plausible explanation given the facts we have.

Wouldn't be suprised in that case u could probably eliminate Frazier and Curtis, Clark could play 4-3. Holley would be my first choice if u replace NG w/ a DT.

Yeah, I can see us taking a DE/DT instead of say 3 DBs or 2 QBs

If that is truly EV's reason for wanting out of his LOI, then he can hobo right back to Cali with his framed LOI to stare at for a year while he waits to become eligible.

If the staff feels good getting Golson back and Hendrix back for another year (I know, 2 big if's), then there's no need to take 2 QB's this cycle. Looking at STL's list (and I know it's just a list, but the numbers look about right and adding names to the numbers helps make the model more tangible for us to digest), there isn't a lot of wiggle room. I've maintained for awhile now that the LB depth is tough to get a good read on until we hear more about Okwara and Randolph. Okwara could redshirt...or play either OLB position this year and ensuing years (I think the idea of him becoming a DE is dead...unless there's a switch to a 4-3). Randolph will most likely redshirt...and could play M, W, or perhaps C. But depending on how they shake out, the staff could get by with signing 1 OLB and 1 ILB. Not ideal, but feasible in a numbers crunch and willingness of recruits at certain positions to actually come to ND.

I see the ability to sign 5 OL this cycle growing tougher and tougher. There are now pressing needs for the future at DL and WR because of defections and upcoming graduations. I could see 2 total DB's (1 CB and 1 S) being signed this year to help mitigate numbers at area positions. Even still, then DL and LB (especially) become urgent needs again in the '15 cycle. Then there's the whole TE situation that none of us seem to have a good grasp on (the potential exists for 6 or 7 to be on the roster next year-- assuming they sign 2 this year and/or bring Welch back).

As somebody else alluded to earlier, the staff really does have their work cut out for them in simply deciding numbers and targets, let alone reeling them in and keeping them on the roster.

My normal affliction: I'd replace the 2nd QB and one of the WRs with another DLine and Linebacker. Only nine D-recruits in a 23 man cycle seems slim.

I know that everyone is crazy for WRs, but I firmly believe that the TEs are going to be "some" of the WRs in the "new" Kelly Offensive vision.

I'm pretty confident the staff wants 4 WRs if u count Andrews as a WR, they definitely want somone like Holmes or Malone and someone like Quick or Dixon in the slot. If u want to add some to the Front 7 I would pick from Safety, 2nd QB, and even move Luatua over.

As my VT brother said on television once [making a REALLY bonehead joke mistake that Coach Claiborne made him pay for]:

"be''er ask Judd [the player being interviewed with him], he smarter'n I are". --- my brother was a 140 IQ VT engineer. So, taking his wisdom on this: I'll say --- "I be''er ask Coach Kelly, he smarter'n I are", and sit back and be patient.

Either that....or trinity and GBdomer combined to make a post.

Agree 100%, I would like to take only 3 WRs and get another DL or LB instead.

Until Golson is readmitted to ND targeting two QBs is essential. Hendrix 5th year at ND is dubious at best. Even if he is willing to forego medical school for another year, remind me just how many games he's started. There still is no indication he starting QB material.

Kelly has 8 months including an entire football season to see who develops at a position, who transitions to another position, who gets readmiitted or is willing to put their career goals on hold, and ... who falls by the wayside to competition, career ending injury, Res Life, or homesickness.

I have no doubt that Kelly has a plan and will adjust his plan accordingly as events and people develop, or don't.

The challenge with this is most QBs don't wait until the end of the season to commit. The ones that do are usually highly rated guys with a ton of offers that schools will wait for (i.e. not Dawkins). I don't know if the staff is going to take one or two QBs, but I imagine that decision will need to be made sooner than later and not dependent on Golson's readmittance.

Per II Notre Dame has reached out to Serra QB Jalen Greene , he is committed to Boise State

Watched some of his highlights last night when I was looking through QB recruits we could go after. Kid has great mobility, good height at legit 6'2", and a pretty decent arm.

Between him and Dawkins, they have a wopping 2.5 offers and Dawkins has solid rankings and this kid has good film. It must be a Cali thing.

The easy comparison is Malik Zaire, but I'll go out on a limb and say he's a left-handed Vince Young.

Some other QBs I like that I hope we take a look at are Manny Wilkins, William Crest, Aaron Sharp, DJ Gillins, Will Ulmer, Drew Barker, Morgan Mahalek, Michael O'Connor, and Nicodem Pierre. I think Pierre is the most underrated player in the class kid has a cannon and can run.

His measurables, tape, and reviews remind me of a taller Golson.
