Jay Hayes could be an option. I think he'll see time at the three tech and SDE.

Wouldn't it be nice if we had one more big on the defensive line? Someone athletic enough to play SDE but big enough to play the three. You know, a five star guy that could be an anchor. I guess it vanderdoesn't matter at this point. The roster is what it is.

I think the ability to stop the run is more crucial for the Irish than their pass rush. Michigan and Stanford will try to run the ball. USC, ASU, and FSU (even with Winston back there) will as well. No need to worry about a pass rush if the DLine can't stop the run. Also, I would think that BVG holds true to his past defensive strategies and there would be less emphasis on getting the DL up the field to pressure the QB and more emphasis on gap control and eating up space for the LBs and safety to "create" QB pressure. Of course, nothing matters in the end if the run defense struggles.

Funny thing is, the last few seasons, our trademark has been up-the-middle run defense. And this year that's our biggest question mark. We need Jones and Day to play big and a middle linebacker to emerge. Do that, and I don't really worry about the outside running game, or the pass rush.

The news of Grace and Councell returning has made me much less worried than I was. Our DL starters should do fine as well, so it's mostly a question of what we can get out of our freshman #2s. We've had serious question marks about the defense heading into all four of Kelly's seasons.

I see it the same way, especially if the offense lives up to expectations. If Golson runs an explosive offense, an even greater emphasis will be placed on attacking the interior of the defense. Run the ball, control the clock and keep our offense off the field. That game plan wins a lot of games if the defense can't consistently stop the run.

Media can gather video for the first 5 periods today. Also BK and a number of players will be available after practice today. Practice starts at 11 today.
