i'm probably wrong, but couldn't temple be an appealing job to coach diaco?? close to his roots and i think with the right guy there they can win. is it too small?? seems like it would be a good fit with his ability to recruit the Northeast.

I doubt it. I guess it just depends on how bad he wants to be a head coach. I mean, I'd say that job is way beneath him, but then again Gus Malzahn went from OC at national champion Auburn to HC at Arkansas State, a SUN BELT program, and ended up with an SEC job. It's not like taking the Temple job would necessarily derail his career in big-time football.

The problem is that we don't know what Diaco wants. Surely he wants to be a head coach, but does he want to be a head coach at a school in the NE, where his roots are, or at Iowa, where he played, or just at the highest-profile football school possible, wherever it may be located?

I don't think we know, and without knowing what his career goals are we can't really evaluate what may or may not be a good career move for him.

Tennessee fans' attitude toward the football program is pretty bleak right now. I have no idea who they will go after now.

There has been some talk about Jimbo Fisher but I don't know why he would want to leave FSU.

Heard that perhaps the coach at Iowa State becomes a target at Wisconsin. Does that then open up ISU for Diaco?

I don't think he'd be especially interested. He's an Iowa Hawkeye. And it's not like he's from the state of Iowa, so close doesn't count.

Someone asked a great question on this board earlier this week though ... what do we know about Diaco's wife? Where is she from? Todd Graham ostensibly left Pitt for ASU because he wanted to be closer to his wife's family. If Diaco met his wife in college and she is from Iowa and she has family there, you may have something.

But that's a lot of ifs. I'm not worried about ISU unless they start coming after him and he shows interest.

I agree with you here, except the Gus part. Gus had to take the Ark St gig. He saw the writing on the wall at Auburn (and he didn't see eye to eye with Gene either, especially during 2011) and he had turned down the Vandy job before that. Add to the whole thing his wife is flat out bat **** crazy and now you can see how you take a pay cut to go to ark state. It worked out in the end for him, but that was the path he had to take.

I'm not sure what you mean when you say that you agree with me, "except the Gus part." My point about Gus was just that taking a job that appears to be a step down in the college football hierarchy doesn't put a ceiling on your career trajectory.

If you are saying that a move that may seem like a bad career move to us may be a good move for a coach for personal or professional reasons that aren't apparent to the public, I certainly don't disagree. That was part of what I was trying to say. There may be jobs like Temple that we think are beneath Diaco, but he may want the job for personal reasons that we don't know about.

EDIT: I've just re-read my prior post and I think I see the misunderstanding. I seemed to suggest that Malzahn took the ASU job because he just wanted to be a head coach. Not my intent. I was just saying that if Diaco does really want to have his own staff and be on his own, even if he does so at a lower-tier school, Malzahn's example shows that he can get back to top-tier football.

In all seriousness though I will bet Dave Hart throws as many doubloons at Butch Jones as possible. They can't take another public rejection.

Ideally, I would like Diaco to look at what happened with Pelini, Fisher, Muschamp, Smart, etc and see that being a grear coordinator for a few extra years will get you the high profile gigs, if that is what he wants. But like you said, we really don't know what he wants so this is pure conjecture.

Butch Davis is not taking the FIU job. The thought is that the reason FIU fired Cristoball is because they wanted Davis... He must be in talks with a bigger school otherwise I don't know why he would turn it down.

You guys should get a kick out of this:

There is still some Tennessee people that are for sure its going to be Gruden. Their theory goes that Gruden is just waiting to get his final pay check from both the Buccaneers and ESPN here in the next week before UT announces him savior of their program.

They also claim that Strong, Gundy, Fisher, and Fedora all have the same agent as Tennessee's AD and are just being interviewed as smokescreen and to help them get raises from their current schools. This plays out true so far...

Then there is this -Grider and Gruden - VolNation. Basically a friend of Gruden just "unexpectedly" retired and will be on his staff at UT.

Tennessee fans are trying so hard to connect the dots back to Gruden. There are lots of "insiders" claiming this stuff for the past couple weeks. I hope they are right, but it seems rather insane.

Gruden also had the ND fight song playing in he head when he lost his virginity. He's just not going to coach a college team. He's a 4:11 a.m. film room guy. Not a fly-across-the country and ***-kiss high school running backs type guy.

and he was appointed by the ND fan base as the new head coach for the last two hirings (CW -- BK)... I believe he had a ND alarm clock as well lol

I knew about his background, never heard the whole fight song thing tho. I guess I would rather have that then thinking Margerat Thatcher naked on a cold day. Whatever works for a first timer.
