I understand what you are saying but for example a guy like Lenzy seemed like the opposite of ND material during much of his recruitment but now he is here he is impressing everyone and seems like a top shelf individual.

Didn't Lenzy decommit from Notre Dame because of track reasons and what he was told by coaches? I understand that what he said about Notre Dame was less than ideal, but I don't think that should have people questioning his character or if he is "Notre Dame material".

Notre Dame and Brian Kelly have tried kids that aren't "Notre Dame type kids" and it usually fails miserably. Exampled: Aaron Lynch, Kevin Stepherson, and that RB that transferred to PSU.

Kids that love the process, the attention, and delay their decision all the way to the last second usually don't pick Notre Dame. So, if this is what Henning is doing, we should probably look elsewhere.

I would 100% be going to ND, but if I was a recruit I would try to visit as many schools and take all my officials to games if possible because why not? As fans I know we don't want this to happen tho

We have to remember these are 16-17 year old kids. They’re very young and decisions to visit or not visit or pick up the phone are not always rational. Jerry Tillery took maybe 8-9 visits to other schools after he committed. That doesn’t mean he’s not a Notre Dame guy cause he likes the process or he’s gonna be a complete failure. In fact, I’ve heard Jerry Tillery is as good of a fit for Notre Dame as anyone on the roster. Recruiting is the wild Wild West out there and it is best not to go in there as a staff and get feelings hurt based on what kids are doing. If kids enjoy the process then maybe it’s more likely they aren’t Notre Dame material but it’s definitely far from 100% or even 80%. There’s plenty of guys that didn’t seem like ND fits who are on the roster and have dominated in their careers at ND. From an AJ Henning perspective, I get that him not picking up the phone is frustrating if it is true, but he’s a worthwhile recruit to keep recruiting if the staff thinks he has legit interest in Notre Dame. He’s got the Mount Rushmore of high academic offers (Stanford, Duke, Northwestern, ND) and has 30+ offers in total. He’s a 4* on every database and has crazy speed which is something ND has concentrated on in the last couple of cycles. I’ll still be rooting for him to end up on campus at some point during the spring visit period (until April 13th).

A lot of bad news here. The kind of stuff we've seen before.

But if that hip surgery worked, he's probably a 10.5's 100m kid so you keep recruiting him until the end.

And pull the trigger on Marcellus Moore too.

Current trends are obviously concerning but the information that keeps getting spread by reporters is that most people expect him to end up at either (1) ND, (2) Michigan, (3) Illinois.

With the expected schools being midwestern non-football factories you have to keep showing him love. If it was "(1) ND, (2) Clemson, (3) Georgia" I'd have already written him off as a flake.

Big difference between taking visits, and not returning calls.
If the latter is true, I’d move on. There’s other fish in the sea.
But if he likes ND but wants to go take a look at Georgia or whatever, personally I’d rather he do that now then commit and have second thoughts later in the process.

Never really acceptable to slander kids character for not liking the same thing that we like. Also you never know how things play out. Look at Lenzy.

Enough said, 100% agree on this. I've been following recruiting since Clausen and recruiting seems to change each and every year. We all get pissed when a kid commits (Lenzy, Tuitt), decommits, and re-commits. These kids are making one of the most important decision of their lives. You have coaches that are negative recruiting, parents that play more of an impact.

I am fine with a kid taking other visits, am I fine with a kid not returning calls? No, but like Weis did during recruiting, if your looking elsewhere so is ND. If he doesn't return our phone calls other recruits will.

I still think he ends up at ND, he and Jordan Johnson would make one hell of a WR class.

Retweeted by Pyne. Johnson also said AJ is his top priority. Something brewing?

Henning just finished an Illinois visit which garnered two commitments (Reggie love being one of those commits) and might be getting some feelings towards that program. Many many Illini fans in his comments section of that tweet. Could be ND or Illini but I think Henning needs to get back on campus. Hopefully in the next few weeks.

According to MF

"he keeps in great contact with ND, but hasn't scheduled a trip back as of yet. But, he's always talking with ND and keeping in contact."

https://irishsportsdaily.com/forums/1/topics/34629

Who started this all that he hasn't been responding to the coaches?

247, who knows who’s right. No offense to Mike, as I love the entirety of the product they put out, but his intel updates have been pretty generic stuff recently.

Yeah, lately with the visits it's been pretty basic.

Hopefully this isn't a situation where Henning is looking for a reason to go elsewhere as we've seen in the past.

In my hopeful opinion I believe Henning saw enough of ND for a while. In a less than 6 month period, Henning visited 4 times! For a spring practice, for the spring game, for a beautiful summer visit, and a game day which was crazy (Michigan game). Probably he wanted to see what else was out there and make sure he went through the process because of so many offers coming in. Since that ND visit 7 months ago he should get back on campus though. Since that point he’s been all over the place and hopefully that will include Notre Dame in the near future...

4/6/19 Illinois
3/28/19 Louisville
3/27/19 Alabama
3/26/19 FSU
3/26/19 Florida
3/25/19 Clemson
3/25/19 Georgia
3/24/19 Charlotte
3/2/19 Northwestern
1/27/19 Illinois
1/26/19 Michigan
12/15/18 Purdue
10/13/18 Illinois
9/22/18 Iowa
9/1/18 Notre Dame

Hopefully ND can get him back on campus and fight off the tempting prospect of staying home and playing for Illinois. I hope the combo for Pyne, Jordan Johnson, BK, Chip Long, and Del Alexander can close the book on his recruitment with a win for the good guys. Hopefully he can get on campus this weekend actually before the evaluation period starts and the visits become fewer with coaches on the road recruiting.

Drive time is nearly equal between south bend and Cham/Urbana.

Matt Freeman said the other day that he considered Henning a longshot specifically because saying the right things doesn't matter... until he sets up another visit.

Where he lives, Notre Dame's actually a bit closer. But I assume he meant "stay home" in the sense of playing with more kids Henning likely knows from around Chicago?

Either way, if he's serious about Illinois he might be lost to us. He's visited there three times since he's been to ND? Who the hell takes a close look at Notre Dame and says "Eh. I'll go play at Illinois."

Excellent point. I believe there is a tweet that says they are going to play at the same school together, but I can't find the damn thing.

I remember that tweet but also have read 1.2 million package deal tweets that never came to fruition.

BTW, Henning's grandpa is Quinn Richardson who for any of you old hoopers... was a starting guard at Illinois during my senior year in '83-'84. Saw him play on my recruiting visit at Vandy and a few other times. He was a 5-10 shooting guard while Bruce Douglass ran the point at 6-4. Dude could stroke it but unfortunately for him, he never got to play with the 3pt line.

So what I'm saying is... on top of his boy Thompson, he's got more Illini connections.

I could see him going to Illinois and being like the kid from Purdue. An explosive and exciting player on a 7-5 at best team. But fish in small pond

I would say the number of kids that say they are going to play together (d1 level) and actually end up doing that are probably 1%-2%.

I remember Richardson, played for the Lou Do.

Looks like the schedule for Ringling Bros Circus. That schedule tells me, he's visiting schools for the experience or hoping to make an impression. Clemson & UGA on the same day and UF & FSU on the same day? If those schools had him as a priority, I think they would have wanted him to spend a full day with them.

Matt Freeman said the other day that he considered Henning a longshot specifically because saying the right things doesn't matter... until he sets up another visit.

Agree. How many recruits kept saying the right things and never picked the Irish? Too many to remember.
