I’ve evolved on this topic as well. It still pains me to think of the player Jaylon would have been had he just sat out that OSU game. I’d love to have Hamilton out on the field, but I completely understand if he puts his potential 15 year HOF career over 6 games with his boys. He will still be a captain for us from the sideline if that’s the route he goes.

The thing is... sure, you can mitigate risk. But it's a fool's errand.

Just look at Gus Edward's who was primed to be a feature back in Baltimore and have a career year because the people in front of him tore ligaments... and then he goes out and tears his ACL the next practice. Every drill, every practice rep, and every game snap carries some risk. But playing 200 extra snaps in college versus not is immaterial to the thousands of reps/snaps he will take over the rest of his career.

The most logical argument for sitting out the rest of the year is that he has already earned a large paycheck and he shouldn't do anything to compromise that. He's locked in to being a first round pick. How high in the 1st round remains to be seen, but the downside of a catastrophic injury is always there and people will always point at Jaylon Smith.

I think ur most logical argument is right in line with what myself and others are saying…?

I understand it but would be disappointed by it. When sitting out bowl games became popular a few years back or so. I remember Kelly was asked about it and his response was something like we address that in the recruiting process by recruiting guys that come here to play football for ND.

To think Hamilton would be the first to go this route, that's a tough legacy decision right there.

I saw it for guys like Christian McCaffrey who were hurt/banged up a lot their last year. If BK can be trusted on Kyle's injury (lol), then it doesn't sound like it should linger. We'll see next week vs Navy I guess.

I'm not convinced we'll see him the rest of the year if we lose saturday or any of the weeks he misses.

could shut it down and be ready for the draft.

I’m already assuming he’s done and will focus on the draft from here on out. As a fan, I hate it as it probably cements 10-2 as the ceiling and 9-3 as more possible. But, I get it. He could be looking at $35M contract as the #5 pick. And let’s be honest, this isn’t a CFP caliber team so he’s not going to play in the bowl game anyways.

Wait, what? I'm not against the idea we could drop one of the next five games, but two? We're favored in all of the remaining games currently except for Virginia and that's only by the slimmest of margins. I honestly don't even buy it, we've been playing better and Virginia got destroyed by the two decent teams they played.

Listening to the talking heads say Hamilton should not play against Navy because of the chop blocks gets me thinking about whether they should be on the schedule (I know this comes up every year).
Kick them back to a bi annual game. They have not held up their end of the bargain (stay relevant).

I agree with that.... Two weeks off heading into the last three "if" he comes back

I put this in the Navy game thread.

What time is the presser today?? Sorry I know I ask this often. I'm expecting to hear that Hamilton isn't playing, but hoping for confirmation.

I have been thinking about it. I don't think were going to see Kyle Hamilton again this year. I know Kelly said prognosis is good, and I am sure it is from an avoiding surgery standpoint. But a couple things I read in regards to pinched fat pads:

Usually, fat pad inflammation occurs with other knee conditions such as arthritis, patellar tendonitis, and meniscal tears.

Start with simple treatments. These treatments include exercise therapy to reduce the forces on the fat pads, leg stretching to reduce tightness, and taping or bracing the knee. Other effective treatments include shoe modification or orthotics and soft tissue massage. In a small number of cases that fail simple treatments, your doctor may direct a small dose of cortisone into the fat pad to reduce swelling. In cases resistant to cortisone, we consider PRP for fat pad impingement. Surgery such as fat pad removal should be avoided and only used as an absolute last resort. Keyhole surgery is unpredictable and some cases do worse after Hoffa’s fat pad surgery.

So whether out of an abundance of caution or out of need, Kyle is already on the last treatment step before moving to surgery.

So with this in mind, I couldn't help think that when Kelly was also discussing his needing to for Kyle to be coach, that it wasn't part of a larger discussion of his responsibilities to the team if he is choosing to sit out games for the remainder of the season.

Not being able to play changes your perspective. We had a conversation about what the expectations are when you're not playing You are a captain. You've got to be able to leave something at the end of the day. If you're not practicing, you've got to leave something on the field. For him, leave some knowledge. I think he's done a really good job of understanding that. It's different than when you're playing and practicing, where you leave a lot of your conditioning element and learning the game plan. This is a different role for him and I think he's adapted really well.

Then, in an additional looking too much into a quote:

“It’s kind of bittersweet but I know that Kyle will be there for us,” safety DJ Brown said.

What is bittersweet I ask - Is it that they know they wont have him the rest of the year on the field even though he could be playing?

Would love to be wrong, but looking at the remainder of the schedule I don't necessarily see a need for him to come back. Then are you really going to play in a bowl game 2+ months from your last? I dont think so.

Agree, doubt he returns. I get it, heal up and get ready for the next level. It’s the business we’re in these days.

I think it's weird that they lied about the injury immediately after the USC game. Again, maybe Kelly was just misinformed at the time, and never went back to correct the record. This is what I said a week or so ago on the topic:
I also don't think it's as simple as him "opting out." I'm not saying Kelly lied about his initial injury, but he might've been misinformed. An ortho I know said that the injury -- as reported -- made literally no sense.

If it was a low grade sprain or a minor meniscus injury his timetable would optimistically be 2-4 weeks which would put him out through basically the end of the season regardless of whether he wanted to play or not. People close to the situation have been cagey but reading between the lines it basically seemed like they expected him to be out with injury through the end of the season, and then he'd make a determination on whether he wants to play in a bowl game or not. Gut feel would be that he'd absolutely play in the playoffs, might play in a major bowl game, and would likely opt out if Notre Dame shits the bed to close the year.

So now they've confirmed that it was (at least) a meniscus, and that there's no way he's coming back as it was a 6-week injury. And he'll likely play in the playoffs, possibly play in a major bowl game, and certainly not play in a minor bowl game. It would've bene better if BK was straight with the media after the UNC game.

There seems to have been a lot of mis-truths coming from BK this year. No clue if that is normal or not. But you basically can't trust a word he says any more via press conference.

I don't think we see him on the field playing every again, but that's just my opinion. Good luck to him and glad we'll have someone to hang our hat on at the next level in the secondary finally.

Pretty normal at this point with college coaches. As someone who scours pressers for gambling purpose, extremely rare for a college coach to be straight on injuries. For some reason I feel like it’s cagey between conferences, SEC coaches actually I find to be most straight. B1G just literally won’t comment a lot of them which you may find preferable. Big 12 coaches I find similar to BK in that there’s some mistruth/misdirection. ACC and Pac 12 I don’t follow as well

Sampson reporting BK said KH is essentially done for the season. May have to consider playing if CFP is an option.

I can't fault the kid for wanting to shut it down. Selfishly I'd still want him to play in a major bowl game, just due to the fact that it has been so long since we've won one of those.

I think they told us without telling us to be honest.

They called it a "fat pad inflammation" I believe, or maybe it was impingement. But regardless I did the research on it at the time (see post #582 above) and it essentially says this occurs in small meniscus tears. I can respect the university and Kelly for trying to keep the words "knee" and "tear" out of the reports on a future first rounder.

Why werent they more upfront on the 6 weeks? That is probably more between Kyle and his personal medical clearances vs ND and their medical clearances. Something else that also has not seemed very up clear when Kelly mentions Hamilton's status.

Pretty much expected this to be the route it would go. This will be a bummer until he's a top 10 pick and we can enjoy that moment as fans.

I guess the next time I'll be cheering for Kyle is in the NFL.

Everyone? We had weeks of people wildly speculating // impugning Hamilton's character various places on the internet because BK was implying he was healthy enough to play and taking it "day-to-day"... when in reality he suffered an injury that would keep him out for weeks everyone knew it. There is little-to-no tactical advantage to lying about injuries, and I don't know why some coaches are obsessed with it. BK generally hasn't been in the past, but it's a Harbaugh/Kiffin style move to lie about injuries for the sake of a pretend "edge" on the opponent.
