Again confused

No lower than the #3 QB overall in any service yet he's #4 overall composite?

Now that we have that straightened out. It confused me too, and then I realized that the composite was listed at the top, instead of the bottom, which I want to say I am used to seeing.

A few things about Phil :

  • He is a true five star, no bout a doubt it!
  • He has a few things to work on, which drops him back from #1.
  • They are the kind of things Mike Sanford is perfect at coaching out of a quarterback's game.
  • I bet, with the relationship that has been established, Mike has Phil on top of them before he gets to ND.
  • I want to see how much more Phil grows, because as big as he looks on the field, the kid still looks fresh faced, like he is far from physical maturity.

I could be wrong, and every case is different, but the old razor test was a pretty accurate gage on physical maturity, and remaining growth. And I think it still is.

I find Phil so intriguing as a quarterback prospect because of the really highly rated quarterbacks ND has landed, most had hit their physical maturity before entering ND. True, DeShone continued(es) to mature, but he was a low four star.

I see Phil as starting off with the hype of a Clausen, and continuing maturity potential of a Kizer. Kid could be off the charts, best case scenario.

I wouldn't worry about him getting dropped or raised a few spots. He's got plenty of time to work on it and he'll be working with Sanford and Brian "qb whisperer" Kelly.

I think we say that about every service that rates a respective prospect the lowest.

Yeah. And when we have a low rated guy "he's got time to improve, very raw". Like all of the other 3 stars for other teams couldn't say the same.

I wouldn't say that. No service is perfect, and Rivals has dropped significantly in quality over the last few years. I'd say 247 is still the best by a wide margin, but even they botch their fair share of evaluations. It's just a matter of watching the film and hearing what the experts have to say. In Phil's case, the conclusion across credible experts and film analysis is essentially unanimous. He's a 5-star and one of the top QB's in his class. Easily a top 5.

At the end of the day, for most players, exposure can be a huge barrier they have to break through. Even then, I still have to scratch my head at the evaluations of a Drew White, for example. Who has absolutely stellar film and plays at national powerhouse St Thomas Aquinas, and is a Captain. Yet, he's one of our lowest rated commits. ESPN is the main culprit for THOSE type of situations. Simply put, they're just not a very good source for recruiting, and it really ruins the credibility of the composite rankings.

Drew White Rankings:

- 247: #39 ILB #131 FL
- ESPN: #20 ILB #109 FL

You're mixed up: that's his 247 composite ranking (taking the average of the 4 major sites.) 247's ranking of him 290th overall, 12 ILB 39 Florida. Very very respectable.

Good catch. Reps. Scout has the lowest ranking of White.

Like I said, that was more of a testament to how some services can just universally botch an evaluation like they did with White. However, I also mistook the composite ranking for 247's initial one, but the Composite shows that there's a lot of mistakes to be made. Too many prospects to track, and not enough manpower to properly and accurately evaluate everybody.

Oh well. He has too full seasons to improve and show his play. Not worried. His tape is great and reminds me of Blake Barnett

If he had committed to Ohio State, he'd still be atop 10 player. No italics. Literally nothing changed in his film from a year ago when he played. He goes to a camp and because a few amateur "scouts" don't like his throwing motion he gets knocked... fine. You can have your camp all-stars like Shane Morris, I'll take the guys who produce in games and show special traits.

You think he should be the #8 QB in the class including being behind a kid who has never taken a meaningful snap?

No, I don't think there are 8 QB's better but to have him in the top 60? Maybe a little to low but Phil still has some work to do but he's a prospect that has me and everyone pretty damn excited. But do I think Trevor Lawrence, Emory Jones, Matt Coral are better? Yes, and at this stage Stikiwosi is a little more advanced as a passer IMO. Besides Emory I don't think those guys can make plays when the play breaks down like Phil can so it's kind of what you prefer in a QB. Jack West is a damn good QB from everything I've read and typical Stanford QB. It's a great year for QB in 2018 and I think Phil dropped because of his up and down performance at the rivals100 challenge. I think 247 has him ranked a little to high but is he a potential top 10 player? For sure, is he now? No

It's about right. Phil isn't close to be an elite passer like some of the kids out there, but they also aren't the playmaker when things break down that Phil is.

It's just a preference on which you value more.

Trevor Lawrence is by far the most talented QB in the class at this point. His ball is a thing of beauty.

Matt Corral is similar to Jurkovec and I believe he is a little more advanced as a passer. He has had better WRs so that helps, but he also plays a much tougher schedule than Jurkovec.

Now this is where you can put Phil or stick Phil where you have him.

Emory Jones and Phil are comparable, but if you watch Jones' film, he plays like he is in slow motion. It's effortless. He's a kid that played like a senior as a sophomore.

5th is where I would personally put Jurkovec. I do think he is better than Artur Sitkowski, Jack West and Cameron Rising, but I would put Joey Gatewood as the #2 QB in the country.

I would also put Casey Thompson at #6. He will put up some big numbers wherever he goes to school. Very similar to Kyler Murray.

Agree, very much with what you said. Gatewood is a top 5 QB, if I had to rank them I would go

1. Lawrence
2. Emory
3. Coral
4. Gatewood
5. Phil
