Dax...

I worked at a Kroger store in college (nothing will change your politics and social outlook quicker than a job like that btw) with a meat cutter named Dax... he was maybe the single biggest D bag I ever had the displeasure of having to deal with... That name still invokes a seriously negative reaction with me... hopefully this young man can help with that.

Per Driskell he's not the highest on Hollifield and I'm not sure the staff is so much. Not sure he would be an upgrade at all over Bauer and not sure how much of a need ILB is right now. He thinks there is a major gap between him and Gant.

IMO it's apples and oranges when talking about Gant and Hollifield. ND is recruiting Gant as a Drop LB whereas Hollifield is a an out and out Mike LB.

I think Driskell is nuts on this one the kid is a flat out stud but that said he's a luxury and not a need with all the MLB on the roster as well as the potential stud in Bauer already in the class but the point is ND would be nuts to turn him away if he wants to come.

Fairly confident that Gant is being recruited as a Buck LB

The only thing we'll be sad about this year is everyone they had to leave on the table because they ran out of room. What a great problem to have... until one of them becomes Kuechly or Elliot.

Plans to cut list to 5 this summer, from this article it doesn't seem like ND will be on it

Top programs in the mix for nation's third-ranked ILB - Football Recruiting - Scout

Like I said earlier. Some things will have to be left on the table. I think ND was in very good shape with Holifield but he's too much like Bauer and Bauer is in. I'd like to see Simon or McGrone and Calvert or Lamb join BB & OO this class and you have all the bases covered. You redshirt 2 or 3 and go light on LB's next cycle.

I agree with the assessment on Dax. They view him as a Mike and they already have Bauer, good to go there. However, I would put Simon in a category by himself, for this conversation, but big picture, with other high end Rover targets. And McGrone is his own as well, as ILB only prospects, which might keep him out. I view it as follows

Simon-Rover
Bauer-Mike
Dax-Mike
OO-Rover/Buck
McGrone-Mike/Buck (ILB)
Calvert and Lamb- Buck/Drop

Do you think McGrone can play Rover? Or is the assumption that if they take McGrone, you start OO at Rover? I just don't view Simon and McGrone as similar players, much at all.

I agree with your designation though I'd add Buck to Simon. He's getting big. 6-3, 210 now. I think he ahs the perfect skill set to play Rover but if he's a 230+ guy down the road, maybe JOK is the better fit long term?

In regards to McGrone and why I had him as an "or" with Simon. It's not because I see him as an either/or to Shayne at Rover, it's because I think if the staff gets Simon and one of Lamb/Calvert, there's no room left for McGrone plus having Lamb/Calvert keeps OO at Buck his entire career as they would be easier to get into weight for Drop as opposed to Ovie. I'm still on record thinking Ovie could be a great Drop, he just needs more time with Balis to get there than the bigger Cali boys. Would LOVE to have had Ovie in the days of the 3-4.

Back to McGrone: If Simon and one of the Cali boys comes, he's left on the table. In my opinion, I wouldn't lay money on that happening and McGrone is in this class.

And I agree with most of that. I guess that's why I'd put in one grouping, high end Rovers, with Simon being one of them. And in another grouping, versatile LB's with McGrone being in that group. Point is, I expect another Rover prospect to be in this class, and that won't have any impact on McGrone's recruitment. What will impact his recruitment, will be that of Calvert, Lamb, Winston, etc.

I'm on board with that but I'd love to be able to ask Elko:

What possible positions do you think Ovie could play?

If you land Simon is he Rover only or could he grow out of it or is his skill set more important?

Is it possible Houston Griffith has a future at Rover when/if he gets the proper size?

You asked if I think if McGrone play Rover? My answer is I don't know if he has the skill set. I think it will be a moot point though as I'll bet the house he's 230+ after his redshirt year. I think you are looking at Darrin Kirkland 2.0

Adam Friedman who is the Mid Atlantic Rivals guy said something that caught me by surprise:

https://n.rivals.com/news/mid-atlantic-invasion-which-schools-from-outside-region-recruit-it-best-

Notre Dame's association with ACC has clearly altered their focus on the recruiting trail. There were only four Mid-Atlantic prospects in Notre Dame's 2015 class and just three in 2016. In 2017 that number jumped to eight (nine, if you include Pennsylvania native Rivals250 offensive lineman Robert Hainsey from IMG Academy), and there are already five in this year's recruiting class. Former Rivals100 quarterback Brandon Wimbush is the best Mid-Atlantic prospect Notre Dame has signed since that 2015 class, but there are a lot of other promising prospects headed to South Bend. Pennsylvania products Phil Jurkovec and Matthew Bauer are two of the marquee players in Notre Dame's 2018 class, and more could be on the way. Rivals250 linebacker Dax Hollifield and defensive linemen Thomas Booker and Jayson Oweh are all strongly considering the Fighting Irish

He's usually got a good pulse for this area, like Trieu does for Scout in the Midwest. Anybody else with thoughts on this?

ISD says Lamb is higher up. If he goes elsewhere then the staff will reevaluate

I get that I just thought this ship had sailed, left the harbor, sailed into the sunset and was on the other side of the horizon.

Didn't think you'd need a sextant to follow Irish recruiting, did ya?
