No mention of ND, plans on taking an unofficial and an official to Stanford. Time to close up shop here.

Shelby (NC) High Top247 linebacker Dax Hollifield was awarded his jersey to play in the U.S. Army All-American Bowl on Friday as the Selection Tour came by his school.

247Sports ranks the 6-foot-2, 236-pound Hollifield as the nation’s No. 4 inside linebacker.

“Growing up as a little kid if your dream is playing major D-I football, your goal is to be a U.S. Army All-American,” Hollifield said. “It’s a huge honor. It’s something you dream of as a kid but you never think of being one. Having this chance it’s incredible and going to be an amazing experience.”

Set to be played in San Antonio, Texas on Jan. 6, the history and tradition of the U.S. Army All-American Bowl is unparalleled, highlighted by Heisman Trophy winners and more than 400 NFL players counted among its alumni. Throughout its 18 years, the game has featured the nation’s most elite football players before they reach stardom. Just some of these alumni include: Odell Beckham Jr., Andrew Luck, Adrian Peterson, Tim Tebow, Christian McCaffrey, Eric Berry, Patrick Peterson, Sam Darnold, and hundreds more.

Over 40,000 fans pack inside the Alamo Dome to watch the U.S. Army All-American Bowl just about every year, many of them servicemen and servicewomen.

“Those are the people that protect our freedom,” Hollifield said. His uncle currently serves in the reserves. “Those are the men and women, we wouldn’t be able to play in this game if it wasn’t for them. Everything goes back to them. It’s an honor to play for them and I want to represent them well.”

Hollifield is not close to making a college decision and maintains he’s still considering Florida State, North Carolina, Virginia Tech and Stanford among others.

The next two trips Hollifield is scheduled to take are to Stanford. He’ll attend the Cal game on an unofficial in November and then return for an official in January. All his other top schools have already received their officials.

“It’s hard for them to get players,” Hollifield began. “The application process, a lot of kids don’t want to do that. I’ve had to write five essays where with a lot of these schools all you have to do is write your name. It’s a tough process to go through. That being said, not many are being recruited by them.”

It’s obvious Hollifield is serious about Stanford.

“”They don’t have much depth at linebacker,” he said. “I see myself going in there, they have a bunch of junior and senior linebackers. Next year they’ll all be seniors. I’ll go in there and learn from them and after that I’ll be on the field automatically.

“Obviously the education, the area, the connections you have if you’re a Stanford graduate, you go for a job interview it’s hard to turn you down because of your degree. It’s the best school in the world to go to in my opinion.”

The school that has been trending for Hollifield on the 247Sports Crystal Ball is Virginia Tech.

Hollifield took his official to see the Hokies the weekend of Oct. 21. There isn’t a college campus he’s been on more than the one at VT.

“By far,” he said. “It’s close. I love the town of Blacksburg. It’s a great place. I love the coaching staff, Coach Foster, Coach Fuente, my recruiting coach Coach Shibest, everyone is great up there.”

Having been to Virginia Tech close to 20 times, his official still had a different feel to it.

“I really understand how much they want me now,” Hollifield said. He was on campus to watch the Hokies beat the Tar Heels. “Coach Foster did not leave my side the whole trip. He was by my side the whole weekend. I feel the need from them and appreciate all they did. The game was great. North Carolina is hurt right now, they have about 20 people hurt but they got after them. They played really well and it was a great experience.”

Led by Gunter Brewer, North Carolina remains in the thick of it.

“I love North Carolina,” Hollifield said. “That’s the flagship school in North Carolina. Coach Brewer went to college with my dad. I’ve known him a long time and we’ve built a strong relationship with each other.”

Hollifield’s official visit to Florida State was still one of his best.

“Coach Miller, me and him have a good relationship,” Hollifield said. “He’s my type of guy. Only thing that worries me is he’s been coaching 40 years and I don’t want him to retire while I’m playing because I love that dude, he’s great. I love his wife and family, they’re all great people.”

Hollifield sees opportunity in Tallahassee as well.

“They want someone to come in and put their nose in the middle,” Hollifield said. “That’s what he’s wanting someone to have, that toughness and leadership I have.”

Hollifield is having a terrific senior season with 96 tackles including 25 coming for loss and four sacks.

I saw a UNC CB come in yesterday. Don't know who it was if it was just false hope or not but happy to see it trending away from them.

The crazy thing about Stanford's class this year is that it's not only small (typical) but it lacks the high end rated players. Usually they sign a highly rated California QB, some highly rated OL, and a couple highly rated randoms.

This year their best player per 247 composite is a 91 rating QB. Their class in total has 13 players, with only 4 low 4:s: guys. It's ranked 52nd.

Last year, for comparison, they signed four players rated 98+ in a similar sized class... since 2014 they have not signed a class rated lower than 24th despite often being small.

And as far as I can tell, they currently don't lead for anyone on the crystal ball. If this holds, this will give them 74 signees over four years... they always get a lot of 5th year players, but damn that's crazy. You have to think they have depth issues somewhere on their roster.

The early signing period really messed them up IMO. Obviously this is year one having it, so it will be interesting to see if they make any adjustments moving forward.

They also lost a few players to the draft that had eligibility. With that said, I do like the OLB/WDE’s they signed. Fox and Tobe Umerah.

^^Yeah because wasn't their strategy normally to have their prospects visit after the season and during a banquet or something because their game-day experience is shit?

So either kids knew they didn't want Stanford and didn't take the visit late in the period and signed on ESP or went on an official and the lack of the electric atmosphere turned them off, no pun intended.

Theory - no proof.

I think you may be right, I think their game of blaming "admissions" and waiting until the end of the cycle to really close with a fury (including their all-in on January visits that they do a great job with) doesn't work anymore.

I can't find a visit list anywhere, but the only guy I can think of that took an in-season OV and committed there over a comparable offer was Thomas Booker. I'd love to actually look at a list of game day visitors they had this year and who went where.
