I like his high school tape more than Malik's high school tape. He has a pretty strong arm even with that funky throwing motion; Sanford can clean that up though

Yeah, I agree...granted Malik didn't sell me on throwing either until I heard Dilfer talk about him at the Elite. You are right...it is almost like he is throwing it from the hip, like a true gunslinger. A concern for sure but Sanford can iron that out.

"As of now, Notre Dame is definitely my No. 1," said Davis. "I've watched them play a lot this year, but was very impressed with the Clemson game, even though they lost at the end. [Quarterback] DeShone Kizer played really well considering the environment and impressed me a lot."

"A Notre Dame offer was pretty much a dream," said Davis. "To have gotten it is pretty surreal. They are a very prestigious university and have a great football program. I've always liked the Irish."

"I'm working on going up there on Nov. 14," said Davis. "I want to see the campus and watch their last home game against Wake Forest."

"As a quarterback, I bring a guy that can break down a defense and read coverages well," said Davis. "I can go through my route progressions, along with my pre-snap reads. I have good feet, so I can avoid pressure in the pocket, extend plays, and get out of the pocket if I need to. I'm pretty fast and athletics, so if there is a designed run or a play breaks down, I'm a threat as a runner."

IDK how I feel about this kid. I wish ND would start going after QB's taller than 6'1. Guys like Kizer/Wimbush have no trouble seeing the field well downfield. Even Zaire can see the field well. Golson struggled at doing this and seeing open guys down the middle.

Wimbush is 6-1, Zaire is 6' same as golson was-- at least by ND's own team measurements. So this kid fits right in line with them all, except Kizer.

...he's a junior in HS - he can still grow to be 6'5" for all we know.

Can you think of an example where this happened in football recruiting? It's common for other kids, but a lot of time the best high school football players are good specifically because they grew early.

Texas has a great very good 2017 QB class. Maybe they went with Davis first because they really do like him the best or maybe it's because he isn't committed to one of the in state powers and want to be his unquestioned leader which is exactly what has happened as he quickly named ND his leader.

Tape for tape though, I like Texas' Kellen Mond more than anyone not named Shawn Robinson in the class of '17. 6-3 pass first, dual threat, fantastic footwork already on his sophomore tape. I thought I read he was wanting an ND offer. Offered by Duke if you want to read into that. Finally, he's from San Antonio so a Spurs game with the Robinsons this January and February and straight through to the Finals might help him rethink his choice.

Davis is very fast and I saw him throw to his 2nd or 3rd option a couple of times, he keeps his eyes downfield despite pressure.

I just really hate having a QB that can't see over the line, or that has too many deflected passes, etc.

Sure, there are outliers and if we pick up Davis, I hope he turns out to be one of them.

He looks like he could kill in the read/option part of the offense.

his folks should have pulled a Jimmy Clausen and held him back a few years so he could be 20 years old as a college freshman

Give an example??? C'mon now. My excel spreadsheet crashed when I was inputting every junior and senior in high schools weight and height and comparing it to their first year in college.

I was 6'2" by the time I was a junior in high school and I was done growing. My dad was 5'11" as a senior in high school and grew to 6'5" heading into his sophomore year of college. People are different - it's genetics/hereditary/nature what have you.

Why do you think lots of freshman don't play....not just because of techniques and talent development but because they are still GROWING as well.

Don't throw a kid under the bus just because he is 5'11" now. Doesn't mean he won't be 6'2" when it's all said and done.

Haha. Give your computer a break and focus on height, that's what I am talking about! As we all know people grow two directions. Kids sit out because they are growing heavier/stronger. I've never heard of a short kid sitting out a year so he could get taller!

In my experience with recruiting, almost every single kid ends up listed at, or 1 inch below, the height their recruiting profile suggests.

Sure, lots of kids continue to grow and fill-out, but a lot of times that late growth spurt that is the precise reason they weren't star athletes in high school. And look at Davis. The kid shows no sign of immaturity.

My only point is I would not count on a growth spurt. That's not to say it never happens.

Staff maybe going after two QB's next year? Book and Davis back to back is a little underwhelming for me but I trust Sanford and his QB evals but I am still wondering about this.

per wiltfong-in addition to being a talented player is a locker room guy and leader
per sharpley-Elite speed!, needs to progress as a passer

I just don't get a sub-6'0" QB that needs to develop as a passer in a system where we take 4-5 WRs per year and run the offense we do.

Get another DeShone! I love smaller RBs and slot guys, but not QBs.

I'm with you. Something about seeing a QB darn near Cam Newton sized back there gives me a lot of confidence.

I think a QB that runs with power is more important then size. Zaire despite being 6'0" runs with power and falls forward. Golson didn't.

The world of college football is littered with WR's that used to be QB's.

Yeah after having a RS freshman who was third string in spring turn in the best QB performance in a season since he's been here, I trust Kelly with his QB recruiting.

The Underclassman of the Week is Cedar Hill (Texas) quarterback Avery Davis, who is the newest member of the Scout National Top 100 for the 2017 recruiting class.

he four-star, who already has offers from schools like Notre Dame, Oregon State, Texas Tech, Kansas, SMU and Colorado, is having a big junior season.
At 6-foot-0, 180 pounds Davis is an athletic playmaker at the position, but can throw and run. SO far this season he has accumulated 1,863 passing yards and 21 touchdowns to go with 663 yards and 10 scores on the ground so far in 2015.

Because he was scrambling to get on the loose ball.

Per Matt Freeman of ISD, Davis is visiting South Bend for the Wake Forest game.

I have not watched highlights as I don't believe that ever tells a whole story, however, the coaches like him, and seeing what the coaches have done with Kizer this season, after I didn't think he'd ever be ready after watching him this preseason, I'll refer to their judgement. Plus, the kid is coming as a Jr, on his own dime, for a game in November........tells me the kid is serious, and I'd have no problem with having him a part of this team.
