Theory... Some kids get their heart set on Alabama because its considered "the best" football schoool. Some kids get their hearts set on the State school and just wait for an offer. Similarly, a few kids, like Robertson, probably now see Stanford as the pinacle of combining academics and football and get fixated on it. Because most football players are not as concerned with the second half of that equation, we just don't encounter it as much. But we got a couple of eleite linemen this year who turned their noses up at OSU (a great school) to go to ND.
Notre Dame needs to focus on why it is the best, rather than trying to be Alabama or Stanford:
It is by far the best combination of Football, Academics, Faith, and Tradition(/Brand).
The faith thing may be offputting to some (including some of our fans), but that is what Notre Dame is supposed to be. You can go to Alabama and get a great education. You can go to Stanford and join a bible study. You can go to BYU or Navy and go to the NFL (well, maybe...). But that is not what those schools are about. Alabama is about football. Stanford is about computer starups and chemistry nerds. BYU is about making mormons. Navy is about making officers. Notre Dame is about becoming a man for God, country, and others.
You don't have to be Catholic at ND, but it is purposefully different than Stanford and the Ivy's in that regard. In fact, that may be one of the the reasons it always lags behind in rankings. Academia does not love faith AT ALL. It's also different than the SEC in that football is not all.
