Ian is turning the corner for the team this year. But Ian will not be a starter in the NFL. And more i highly doubt a team waste a pick on him.

I'm not sure he gets drafted even if this level of play continues the rest of the year.
However, if he comes back in 21 and plays this way all year he's definitely getting drafted. I'm not saying he'll be a starter, but he'll be on a roster for a long time if he can continue to effectively go through his reads.

Imo, his floor is a guy that can win you a game or two if the QB1 goes down for a stretch. Ceiling might be Jeff Garcia?

That is a prettttttty high ceiling actually. Garcia was a verrrrrry undervalued QB in SF, which is typical for a guy who was following back to back HOF QBs.

Garcia would have been considered one of the best in team history, for another franchise, just not the Niners. Book does not have that high of a ceiling, imo.

I am not sure I see him as a pro prospect at all, sadly, for him.

The first few pages of this thread are pretty funny

Absolutely. Reminds me a lot of Tommy's recruiting thread. The kind of stuff like "Why are we recruiting this guy? He'll never see the field..." Here's some interesting posts:

I trust Leach on QBs and all things pirate.

Leach is the QB Whisperer.

Project guy with good potential. I don't expect him to start for us unless it's a dire emergency. We needed a QB that wouldn't scare away Hunter.

A quarterback Mike Leach likes and who won't scare away Hunter Johnson or any other elite 2017 recruits? Sounds good to me.

Didn't scare away Hunter, but scared away Phil. Worked out for the best though.

Welcome Ian!

Even if ALL of us are clueless.

It's okay, worked out alright, BGIF. We miss ya.

Project? Potential? How exactly?

Deshone Kizer is an example of a guy with "potential"... Book is a guy who seems downgraded for his stature. He's like the polar opposite of a Jacob Eason or Hackenberg in terms of projecting upside.

I don't see a project at all. I see a guy without sexy tape or elite physical traits, but probably very little risk of "failure."

pkt77242 was probably the first to call it.

100%. This is more Tommy Rees than Dayne Crist. Which is honestly probably exactly what we need in this situation. Ian looks like a 'gamer', as cliche as that sounds.

Ironman8 with another good prediction.

1). Any QB taken by Mike Leach is a good take --- has been said before above, but is the surest sign that the player is quality;

4). I'd take a Tommy Rees all day as my insurance policy, and this guy looks to have at least that much potential;

Thanks for signing up, young Ian, and welcome to a fantastic university and football program.

Good call.

When we've got a comfortable 4Q lead (that's bound to happen at some point in the future, right?), I'm looking forward to saying, "Throw the Book at 'em!"

From 4th quarter mop up duty to breaking records. Unreal.

Who? Haven't read much of anything on this kid. I trust the coaching staff, but this is/was "out of nowhere"! Not sure why we would not slow play this kid a little. Why the rush to take his commitment? Again, I trust in the staff, just a little shocked at this news. Go Irish!!!

Ouch.

IMO odds are very low this player will ever play at QB for ND.....nothing personal there , I mean he seems like a great kid and very smart. But I don't get this offer at all....this class will be Kelly's lowest ranked group as we roll into years 5 & 6 , not a good sign in my view.

Double ouch.

Moar 3 stars
The next Tom Brady

Beats the hell out of Tom Brady, at least at the college level.

6' pocket QB with some mobility. Maybe they think they found the next Montana.

Ian is the next Joe Cool.

Cool? I think

I am just so impressed with this kid watching his senior highlights. Seriously. I'm not trying to blow the usual smoke of "oh he's underrated cause he's committed to us," but more that I wouldn't have any clue who this kid is and yet he seems to do everything right as a quarterback. I think he has just about everything except maybe ideal size and mechanics on long throws.

I also try not to praise the new coaches so much either because they haven't even been here for an entire year, but if this is an all Sanford find, color me impressed.

Took me a while to actually post on Ian in this thread. I was just curious as to what exactly I said. This comment was made after his senior highlights came out. Aged like fine wine.

Truly, I hope that Ian puts a permanent stamp on ND fans minds after this season and gets acknowledged as one of the best QBs to ever come through here, but I think even if he finishes his career with all the records and winning percentage that he will have, he will still be left off the list for fans unless he stars in the NFL or something or wins it all.

I just went back too and by the grace of God, I somehow didn't hot take Book before his Senior film came out. But there's no denying his Sr film is excellent, a huge improvement over his Jr. year and shows the building blocks of what you want in a modern QB even if he's not 6-3.

Can someone remind me about the improvement? Did the ND staff talk with his HS coach that led to changes in their offense? Remember there was a reason why Book took more advantage of his legs his Sr year. He went from basically not running his SO/JR seasons to 750 his Sr year.

*Oh and everytime he takes off running at ND all I can see is a LAX player with the hurky jurky running motion. Hopefully Buchner takes that to the highest level known to man.

JOK was a 4.5* in HS. He just didn't get rated as such.

Drew White's another that was a 4* in real life. You can't be that good at STA and not be a 4*. Sometimes a 4*/90 ILB doesn't run 4.53 and isn't 6-3/230.

Lewis and Moala were both production/film 4*'s to me. Moala ran a mid 4.7 at the Opening, that hurt him.

and 247 actually bumped Kiser to a 4* at the end.

I think a lot of kids just suffer because of where they come from.

I agree. He has been such an underrated star at QB. But a single title would change all that.

It’s official. Who is the starting QB next year? Brendon Clark or the field?

Also of note, other QBs to accept invites so far: Kyle Trask, Sam Ehlinger, Jamie Newman, and Kellen Mond.

I feel like I've heard nothing about Clark which seems ominous.

OTOH, there was no spring or fall camp and so no opportunity for the media to hang out at practice.

But still, it doesn't sound like ND has confidence in the other guys right now.

A little of column A/B.

Very limited insight into what's going on in practice, and Clark didn't enroll early, while Pyne did, so Pyne wasn't that far behind him to start. Then of course, there's the imminent arrival of Ty Buchner in January.

He's gonna have to earn his spot.

I must be having hallucinations but I seem to remember seeing Clark get a couple of series somehow somewhere and he looked natural on the field both in terms of moving about and slinging strong passes. I thought at the time: this guy can replace Ian if we need him. He might even ultimately be better because of that arm.

Yeah, I don't have insider info or anything, but I think Clark has looked good in limited reps. Pretty sure he has the higher upside with his arm than Pyne so let's see what's there.

I think Tyler Buchner wins the job next year and it's a "rebuilding" year with 8-10 wins.

The schedule is unusually weak next year, especially with Stanford back in the gutter where they belong. Our toughest game may end up being Cincinnati at home. Hard to see us losing 4 games under the circumstances.

I'd put money on Wisconsin being our toughest game. I'd agree though, definitely poised for another run if we can have some young guys step up

I want to say that I agree but I wonder if it matters on who comes back. If we win a Natty, then everybody is gone. We reached the pinnacle, nothing to play for. But, what happens if we get several of the vets to come back. They might be thinking they can manufacture enough offense to make another run. But, that's just me spitballin

HE came in against New Mexico in garbage time and threw a quick pass that went for a TD..he threw a TD pass before Phil ever did.

And I do recall him having a really, really impressive pass to Keys III in Fall Camp this past year but his reps have been limited, at least to the public eye. BK had some good things to say about him after Fall Camp and I think he'd be a fine backup should, heaven forbid, anything happened to Book and he was forced into action.

Don't know enough about him, Pyne or Buchner to call that yet, but it's nice to know we have options after Book, whether that's next fall or 2022.
