I think if Kizer stayed for 2017, this conversation would be different
If Germany didn't move into Russian territory, the world would likely look different. I love alternative histories as much as the next person but let's try to contain the discussion of "better" to the factual/actual rather than the speculative as best we can. Fair?

Seems fair. One major thing Kizer was saddled with was some really bad coaching. Arguably the worst in ND history in 2016. That staff was an unmitigated disaster, Kelly included. Also, let’s not forget the problems with the strength and conditioning at the end of Longos tenure.

Totally understand. He didn't have a competent defense and the program was peaking in toxicity. However, they also had decent OLs around that time and it's not like there weren't players around him that could've changed the outcome in some of the games. Look what Teddy Bridgewater did with his Louisville teams? A great QB can elevate those around him. What did Kizer do for us?

Hell of an arm, all the potential in the world and his story would've been drastically different if he came back for 2017. That was a loaded team in 2017 and he might've been the difference. Josh Adams, Dex, ESB, Claypool, Stepherson, Boykin, Durham Smythe, Alize Mack, Joe Moore award-winning offensive line.

Ahh what could've been.

Back in reality, Ian Book max'd everything and has the stats and won more games and helped orchestrate two, almost three, playoff runs.

We are argue about dumber things on this board but ill go with it.

Ill say it this way. Kizer was the better talent while Book helped steer a better program.

He'll get picked up somewhere. Thought he showed some positive growth over the course of the preseason. He can grow to be a quality back up. If Nathan Peterman has been able to hold a job for as long as he has, no reason why Book can't.

That's a deep cut... bet Book never saw it coming
I doubt that. People in New Orleans have been calling for his head all preseason. Played okay Saturday night, but overall had been pretty bad. Still doesn't rip it. Tucks and runs. Really appreciate what he did for ND. Awesome young man, but not sure he sticks around on any active rosters going forward.

This. Was never all that comfortable in the pocket. At this point, I don’t see how that is something that can be fixed. But rooting for him and I’m sure he’ll end up on a practice squad and get another shot.

There was a write up talking about how he finally found his footing in the last preseason game. Went 8 for 11 I think with 81 yards and a TD, leading rusher with 50 yards. It was expected he'd be gone though with Winston, Dalton, and Hill as an emergency backup getting the 3 QB spots. That's hardly an impressive QB room though. You'd think they could probably save some cap space by keeping Book on the rookie deal. Winston and Dalton have some injury history.

TBH, I'm surprised he made it last year, but I'm rooting for him.

im guessing he ends up on practice squad, but barring another worldwide pandemic, I think his time seeing an active roster are over for good.

So who was the better NFL QB? Book or Kizer?
Kizer has been out since '21, but my guess is Book will hang around the practice squad for the Saints unless someone picks him up. For now Kizer had one full season in Cleveland and that was about it. He didn't really see any other action while Book got just one game in one season.

Hang in there, Ian. That 40 year decision clock ain't going anywhere. Make ball your job as long as you can.

They've got him as 3rd string behind Hurts and Minshew. Minshew's rookie contract runs out next year, could be interesting. Kinda funny how Minshew transferred in to Washington State in 2018, likely because they were lacking depth since they never found a good replacement when we stole Book...and now both former Washington State recruits are playing for the Eagles.

I was mostly joking. Kinda funny that even if Ian never plays in an NFL game there can still be a debate based on how bad Kizer was for the Browns.

Our damn Browns ruined at least 1 1/2 decent ND QBs...

Ian Book told tells the story about his injury against Northwestern in 2018. Pretty crazy.

Here's the story:

Big. Fuckin'. Balls. Notre Dame Man.

Actually listened to the whole interview, which I don't normally do. Lots of good stuff about his first start for New Orleans, he didn't get snaps with the 1's until Pregame because so many practices were cancelled due to COVID sickness. Talks about Tommy's coaching scheme and style, he's echoed similar statements as Pyne as far as embracing hard coaching. He points out a coach that yells cares more than one that won't talk to you. Gave a lot of credit to the team and coaches for helping him be the winningest QB in ND history, and hopes someone takes the title someday because he wants to see ND succeed. He comes across very intelligent and humble.
