Plans on taking OVs to ND and USC. Doesn't know other 3 yet. Late cycle commitment is the current plan.

Maybe can take his mission somewhere nearby, say like in Indiana, with a Strength and Conditioning coach there to train him and the people he will be helping? Surely somewhere in Indiana is hurting for help? Maybe Chicago?

Is BYU not in consideration?

EDIT: I don't see them on his offer list but I would have to assume an LDS Utah kid getting looks from USC and ND has one.

Little to no mention of BYU from the reports I've seen. Per Justin Hopkins at 247 after visiting Oregon, Oregon State, Washington, and Washington State. It seems Washington made the best impression. Also, had very good things to say about Oregon.

Good find, I didn't know that. BYU turning down a top 100 player sounds a little ridiculous.

What I found interesting is that he is not slated to be available until 2017 and they said even at that time they would not have a spot for him...Odd all around. I do not believe that is the whole story though. No way BYU lets him out of their sight unless for another reason.

Haven't read any articles, but maybe he doesn't want to do a mission?

He is definitely scheduled to do a mission. This is one of the reasons I do not want to waste too much time on recruiting him. He would commit to BYU on the spot if they offer him according to what I have read, but the whole situation is weird. As talented as this kid is there seems to be a lot of misinformation between his family and the school.

Bottom line is if he commits to ND, he could still end up at BYU if there offer him, plus he would still go on his mission no matter where. All of this is a big pot of "meh" for me.

I remember reading a 24.7 article and he rattled off about 100 schools he liked. So I am pretty sure he is in the beginning of his recruiting process and truly doesn't know right now. Glad to hear we are getting an official visit out of him. He seems pretty in aw with USC right now.

how many guys out on missions would BYU have at any one time? It seems like 50% of these LDS kids go on them

I love this kids film, but I was hoping for more of a slow play bc of the mission. Im not saying thats bad, bc its really speaks to the kids maturity that he takes his faith seriously. But from a PURELY a football standpoint it doesnt benefit ND at all. They are not a team that has a program in place to handle the kids that take them. BYU/Utah have a solid program where were they take multiple kids that go on missions, and have had a lot of success with the program in place. ND has had what, 1 every 5-10 years? We obviously need help on the DL/OLB, but there is a lot that changes in 3 years at a program like ND, esp with a LB class that we brought in with the 2014 class. Great ball player and I would hate to see him go to usc, but doesnt fit what ND does purely on the field.

Badger was a hell of a player coming out of hs but those 2 years really hurt him. BYU isnt on the level that ND is football wise obviously, but it took him almost 2 years to just get into a position to compete for Special Teams time at ND.

FYI..I am not saying he wouldnt be a contributor or that I do not want him in the program. It will be interesting to see how Mama does at usc once he returns from his mission.

Do players on mission count against our schollie numbers? Never understood how that works.

Hypothetically, they would count against the "initial counter" cap (a number we will NEVER come close to breaking) but would not count against the 85 until they are actually playing football on scholarship.

Wow, didn't know Damien Mama took his mission trip. Seems like elite athletes don't follow through with that very often. Good for him.

Mama, will however, play only one year of college football before taking a two-year Mormon mission.

Mama is a devout member of the Church of Latter Day Saints. It's no secret that he intends to participate in a two-year mission after his freshman year of college, and in an article by Talo Steves of Scout.com (subscription required), he elaborates on that plan:

Yeah, I want to serve a mission now and I’m looking forward to that. I want to give back to my Heavenly Father because of everything he’s given me. I have to pay him back with two years of my life. That’s what I want to do.

Scout: Planning OVs to USC, ND, FSU, and OSU. The last OV is up in the air. He is planning to OV for the Michigan game then the USC/ND game. He's looking to win championships. Looking to trim his list soon.

FWIW he plays 4 sports, works over 30 hrs and goes to school.

That's good that he'll watch us twice. Those are two big time games.

Has four officials planned, still hoping to visit ND this summer. Looks like he will official for the Michigan game.
