Brandon will still get snaps even if he isn't the starter. He'll be trotted out for packages.

Kelly's offenses have always been predicated on an accurate QB, we're not Auburn. Heading into the fall last season, I thought Brandon looked accurate on short/intermediate routes but couldn't connect on the deep ball.

I was wrong. He couldn't connect on short/intermediate/long routes consistently. He'd make a good throw then follow it up with a terrible pass.

If he can't put touch on the short/intermediate throws then he can't be the starter. We'll see if it's a confidence issue, a mechanics issue or something else or a nerve(s) issue.

My gut tells me Book wins because he can open up the field and hit receivers on the short/intermediate throws which will keep defenses from stacking the box.

And now that we are losing two AA linemen, we don't even know if we can count on the run game so Brandon is even more of a liability if he doesn't make some giant leaps in the passing game.

Lucky for us, our boys have 6ish months to figure it out.

Double edged sword....the six months.

Normally you would use those 6 months to build an offense that best suits the talent on hand. And BW has tons of talent....its execution that is in short supply at times.

Does it make sense to build two different offenses to suit BW's and Book's strengths and may the QB who best executes wins. Or do you make a pre season call on one QB and go all in that they can get the job done.

I don't know the answer and am very glad that I am not the person making the call.

This is my concern: BW will come out and wow the coaches. Make the throws, make the reads. Then game time lay a flippin egg and be right like he was the end of last year.

Some guys can rock the house in the confines of their home place and just cant do it outside of that.

Im sure Crist looked great in practice and hit nothing but dirt come game time as well.

I'll take that bet. My logic has Book taking the first snap or at least getting more plays than BW against Michigan.

My thinking goes: BW had all last offseason to know the team was his, there was no one breathing down his neck, they tailored the entire offense around him with two AA linemen. He still laid eggs when the pressure was on him. They know what they have in Brandon and no longer have the cushion provided by a dominant left side.

I hope BW makes huge strides and earns the starting spot but the odds aren't in his favor.

I think you build two different offenses at the beginning if it really is a tight race and you continue on that path until someone separates. You don't let it drag on through fall camp because the WRs, RBs, OL all need to develop a "rhythm". I'm sure there are some interchangeable components between the two QBs but from what we've seen, they have very different skillsets.

Crist actually looked like ass in practice heading into the '11 season... to the point where multiple people remarked how "surprisingly close" the competition was between him and Rees.

I think that was a large part of the problem with our WR's last season. Even with BW taking the first team snaps, his lack of performance and our need to become a somewhat one dimensional running team hurt the development of our WRs. It also pushed us to go with "safe" choices instead of trying to grow our young guys.

Are we making hot takes based on guesses regarding situations that have already occurred and been well documented? (also, you're wrong)

I still maintain that Crist was on his way to at least Tony Pike levels of success in BK's offense based on how he looked to start 2010...

But the fact that he had no idea how to naturally protect himself while running the ball hurt him, and his knee injury against Tulsa literally put a full-stop to his development and confidence.

Ok now. Sorry I dont sit in practices and watch 20 year old kids practice. And sorry I dont recall every sat of a busted 5 star player. I remember him being highly rated and doing nothing at ND. Yes I assumed he did well in practice in order that he played on Saturday just like Im sure (and read somewhere) BW did well in practice. Do i drive to S Bend to observe? No I do not. Do I go back and dig through peoples posts from the past? No I do not. Last I knew this was a discussion board with opinions which leaves room for errors. Im sure you have never been included in that group now have you?

Just walked out of Notre Dame’s spring practice. Best I’ve seen Brandon Wimbush, by far. If today’s Wimbush can be packaged for the season, Notre Dame should win 10 games.

Just wrapped up practice. Without question the best practice we've seen this spring from Brandon Wimbush. Was noted by others in the media in attendance. He was incredibly sharp today.

Front page of ESPN NCAAF.

I'm in the "show me" state, and fully under the impression Michigan on game 1 has the defense capable of permanently destroying BW's career and mental makeup if he's not truly better day 1.

But reading these things gives me hope (not expectation).

Notre Dame, Brandon Wimbush working on fix for senior QB

If he goes full Crist/Golson vs Michigan it's lights out for the rest of the year. He'll be like Chuck Knoblauch throwing to first and Mark Wohlers pitching. I love BW and hope he experiences true greatness. I never want to see a kid go into the tank. I'll be in the stadium that night as well. Bring it BW!!!

Not sure if it was posted somewhere, but Wimbush is studying abroad for summer break in Russia (jealous, I assume he'll catch a World Cup game or two). Just hope it doesn't mess with his preparation too much.

I don’t blame the kid at all for studying broads in Russia. I would too.

he will be back before anything w/ camp etc...im sure the coaching staff gave their blessing for him to attend it otherwise i doubt it happens. it might also be a good break for him and it also continues to put out there the kinds of experiences you can have at ND....but maybe he is going as a spy for mueller

The good news is that this means he won't be able to work with that "QB Guru" who always ruins ND quarterbacks whenever they go.

He worked with a different QB camp this past offseason. Taylor Kelly and 3DQB.

Maybe Russia will turn him into a double-agent and then turn him into a perfect QB cyborg in a lab... nothing would divide our country more than Notre Dame winning a national championship.

Do it, Russia! Turn him into an unbeatable football supersoldier!

Good for him, but I selfishlessly prefer our QBs to treat summers like Clausen and throw to the WRs instead of studying abroad.
