Being the best player on this D doesn't make you draft worthy necessarily. They will be back.

With his rate of improvement the last 12 months he will hang around another year keep it going.

I hate to think what could happen if he and Tranquill leave after this year. Might was well travel Mongolia by camelback in the fall of '18 if so.

Would be a surprise if either does, right? Another reason to finish strong, though. It gives these guys - Coney, Tranquil, Tillery - something to build on/look forward to for next year instead of feeling like the grass must be greener on Sundays.

I personally think they both come back.

I'd have not given a second thought about Coney before shade got me on Greg Gabriel yesterday. But when maybe the best NFL scout of this century tweets "Scouts say he is great on film" & "Te'von Coney #4 is considered the best player on the Notre Dame D" you have to understand that isn't coming from the normal ESPN type hype machines, that's coming from his personal conversations with guys still in the business... the guys who will be handing out draft grades. I'd have to say this is a very real situation.

I definitely see Coney leaving after this year. Obviously no inside information, but he's going to grade out rather well, I imagine.

I doubt he leaves. He was only excellent for the last month of the season. That probably translate to the fourthish round.
If he comes back and is excellent for the whole of 18 then he is a potential first rounder etcetera.

Eh. He was pretty excellent for most of the season. But I agree he's better off with another year under his belt. The guy wasn't even quite a starter with Morgan and Martini there. Will be our main MLB next year. Will make all the tackles.

Has the physical measurables, is smart, instinctive, decisive = quick to get down hill and blow things up...I know I'd be glad if the Steelers added him, even if he was a backup for a year or two...he is a baller.

Doubt he leaves.

I've yet to see him ranked anything higher than a mid-late 4th rounder.

He's got decent measurables, but not overwhelming ones. Maybe 6'1 and 240, and he's not overly athletic. Very physical and instinctive, but has yet to play a full season as a starter.

Another thing to consider is that this LB class is STACKED. I mean, it's mega stacked.

Good point. How does next seasons class traject?

Depends on which underclassmen stay or go.

Jefferson at UT is almost certainly going to go in the 1st. Imagine Kendall Joseph and are friend Cameron Smith are making the jump as well. They could be 2nd or 3rd rounders, and the incentive to stay isn't as great at their schools.

That happens, then Shaq Quartermann is likely the expected top LB prospect going into 2018.

I just know that Coney isn't being talked about all that much in terms of underclassmen LB's going early.

The more I think about it, the more Coney reminds me of a Steelers ILB.

Just something about the way he plays... not necessarily a freak physically, but he fills the gaps, makes huge one-on-one tackles, and acts as a consistent enforcer.

Isn't it amazing that we had a potentially 2nd round linebacker that didn't start the entire season?

I really hope he comes back because he's a wrecking ball.

there has got to be a lot of optimism about next season why wouldn't he come back.

because NFL scouts have been raving about his play for 1-2 months now. I'd really like to see him back as well, but I think he might be gone.

Probably has a lot of back pain from carrying the defense this year. Needs some money to get a Chiropractor.

Play that way for the full 18 season and he would be a first rounder. If he goes this year he potentially halves his money.
