I just came here looking for a used ND golf bag..haven't had much luck on craig's list.
It's almost like Nick Saban tells recruits what they want to hear in order to get them to campus and then is more than happy to process them out immediately if a better option comes along.
Weird. If only someone could have told them that during the recruiting process.
Can we stop for a second and appreciate how much Blake the Flake has affected the college football landscape?
He commits to ND, lies a bunch about how solid he is, then decommits. ND scrambles and somehow ends up with Brandon Wimbush, stealing him from Penn State.
Trace McSorley -- a kid from my area that at the time was an 86 rating composite recruit committed to Vandy that nobody cared about -- really came on strong last year. He is currently a leading Heisman candidate for a highly ranked PSU team... what happens if Wimbush is on that roster and battling him for a starting job? One of those two would've lost the QB battle after Hackenberg went pro, and McSorley did not exactly come out of the gate fast. He only had an adjusted QBR above 70 twice in his first 8 games... then in his last five, he had an adjusted QBR of 88+ four times. Does he even get a chance to find his footing after 8 uneven games if Wimbush is also on the roster?
And lost in all the shuffle is USC, who ended up with Ricky Town from Bama which opened the door for Barnett to commit there in the first place. USC realizes Town is overrated-as-f*ck, so they say "we need to get another QB" and go out a half a year after securing Town's commitment and offer the (at the time) much less heralded Sam Darnold. USC poached him from Oregon by offering the day of his unofficial visit to the Ducks... Darnold would commit a month later, and is the projected #1 draft pick for the upcoming 2018 NFL draft.
Oregon at the time of the decommitment was basically counting on landing Barnett. That doesn't happen, as he commits to Bama in an upset despite being (on paper) a much better fit in terms of skill set for what Oregon runs. Oregon then targets Sam Darnold... who, again, they just barely lose the race for. The Ducks eventually end up with overrated Travis Waller, and after a couple years of inconsistent QB play Mark Helfrich gets fired. There's a huge "what if" of how Blake might've developed in that offense and if Helfrich might still have a job. Or "what if" they hadn't been waiting on Barnett and had gone after Darnold earlier.
Meanwhile, in the wake of Barnett's decommitment Justin Hopkins decides to troll a bunch of Notre Dame fans on Twitter. After a rash of cancellations, Hopkins gets publicly reprimanded by his employer -- 247 sports -- and a couple years later is no longer with the company. He starts his own venture titled "Scoop Duck". Quack.
Basically, Barnett ended up helping every single team he stayed away from with the exception of Oregon. Oregon signed a shit QB after missing on Barnett/Darnold, and had their "reporter" publicly scolded like a misbehaving toddler. Karma? Karma.
Saban has never offered playing time to a recruit. He tells every one of them the same thing - they have the opportunity to compete for playing time. Barnett and Bateman were told no different and both had plenty of opportunity to show that they had what it takes. Neither rose up when the opportunity was there. They chose to leave on their own instead of staying. I wish them well at their new schools.
I understand what you're saying, but it also glosses over the fact that Saban was lying to his QB's for maybe an entire offseason, or at the very least for the two weeks of game prep leading up to the opener, and in Barnett's case, during/after the opener, as well.
And then the guy that skipped town on LSU and the Dolphins had the nerve to question a player's competitive fire lol.
If I remember correctly, didn't Blake suck it up Hurt was put in and the offense hit their stride. Why take out the QB if the offense is rolling and scoring points. He always had a "me first" attitude. I wonder what happens if he can't beat out the current starter.
Both Barnett and Bozeman received the majority of snaps in the fall camp. Neither separated themselves as "the guy." To say they weren't given the chance is false. And that is somehow Saban's fault? Not hardly. When Hurts finally got his chance, he seized the opportunity.
Barnett was told before the game that Hurts was getting some zone packages, and that's it.
But after two drives, Hurts plays well and takes over. Saban then tells Barnett that he's still the guy... except he's really not still the guy.
And even if Barnett is lying about all of that, it's still funny to hear Saban question a player about their competitive spirit considering his employment history.

I'm going to have very mixed emotions watching Barnett and Ballage score TDs by the handful.
What noble hero organized said rash of cancellations?

And coaches leaving teams... should a ND fan be questioning others when their current coach left his previous team under similar conditions? You're better than that IrishLion.
Not sure how he will be at ASU, but I can report that his soon-to-be wife is still an absolute smokeshow.
I'm not faulting his moving on from LSU.
It was more about leaving the NFL because he couldn't cut it. Something something didn't wanna compete.
Wait, how exactly is he eligible this year? I know he got the waiver, but for what reason

...
According to a source close to the development, Barnett has been granted a Relief Waiver filed on his behalf by ASU that will make him immediately eligible to compete for the Sun Devils' first game in 2017.
In order to be granted this waiver, it has to be demonstrated beyond just football reasons why a transfer has taken place in a manner that would allow for the student-athlete to play earlier than one year removed from the initiation of the transfer. Barnett made this extenuating circumstances waiver request and it was granted by the the NCAA today, per a source close to the development.
Barnett started the first game of the season for the Crimson Tide in 2016, but departed the program after four games after true freshman Jalen Hurts beat out Barnett for Alabama's starting job. Per NCAA rules, Barnett was initially expected to sit out the first four games of the 2017 season before becoming eligible this season, but the Legislative Relief Waiver makes him eligible immediately.

Obviously Barnett explained unequivocally to the NCAA that he in no way whatsoever did he want to play against New Mexico St, San Diego St, Texas Tech, and Oregon to open the '17 season. Forsaking playing out the '16 season at Palomar College, Barnett devoted himself to academic pursuits spending 8 months crafting a Legislative Relief Wavier demonstrating beyond just football reasons. The NCAA was deeply moved by his premise that an early start in a full season would preclude him getting beat out by another upstart, guaranteeing him a 3 full season before the wins the Heisman and jumps to the NFL.
