Autauga (Ala.) Autauga Academy tight end O.J. Howard vs. Fort Wayne (Ind.) Bishop Luers linebacker Jaylon Smith:

Howard did a good job of getting off the line of scrimmage and down the field but the super athletic Smith stayed on his hip and handled a change of direction with ease staying step-for-step with the 6-foot-6, 226-pound tight end. When the ball was put in front of Howard, Smith did a good job of using his length to get a hand between Howard and the ball, breaking up the pass.

Its somewhat strange because half of those kids probably won't go to perennial NC contender.

His head is in the right place. Looking forward to seeing him progress through his senior year.

That's the south for you.

Jaylon is one of the more impressive recruits from the shoulders up that I've followed in a long time. For an ELITE prospect to be as humble and intelligent as this man is, is just impressive. Those in charge of his upbringing should be commended.

Stoked for the impact this kid will have for this university.

Jaylon won't play the exact position, but these signs are that he will replace The Great Manti, as the super-talented-yet-thoughtful defensive anchor. We have a lot to look forward to watching this young man grow into someone truly special, as Manti has. I am also very much looking forward to them as adult star NFL athletes getting in front of the cameras [like a Justin Tuck, Aaron Taylor, etc etc all the way back to Alan Page and beyond] and showing the world not just a Notre Dame football player, but a Notre Dame graduate.

Yes indeed Jaylon Smith is tailor made for Notre Dame. Beyond the fact that he has rare athletic gifts he will bring an extremely valuable attitude to the program. Humble, intelligent, mature, respecful, this guy has leader stamped on his forehead.

This is a young man with his priorities in order. He will make every other player better by his example. He strikes me as the guy who will keep his head when the pressure is on and fill the other players with calm confidence.

I think he may turn out to be a very special player, we are lucky to have found him.

Everytime I scout Jaylon Smith he looks like the caliber of linebacker Notre Dame hasn't signed in the last decade. #RivalsChallenge

From the ND Rivals Twitter. Really high praise considering Te'o is in that group of LBs from the last decade.

Teo is something of an aberration. Beyond him, we haven't had a truly big-time linebacker since...? Courtney Watson?

Yea he is on the roster now. Odd they didn't announce it. Maybe bc he didn't attend a NFTC.

The tweet is usually a couple hours later, I think II or ISD broke that Onwualu was invited before The Opening tweeted it.

They must feel its worth more to invite Jaylon then invite someone who did attend a NFTC but won't compete well there

“@SBNRecruiting: Best overall player today was probably Jaylon Smith. A guy that big and long shouldn't be able to cover BCS receiver recruits. He did easily”

I have never heard of a LB covering receivers the way Jaylon does. It's so great to think that next year he will be donning the gold helmet! Can't wait!

I wanna know if he was on Heuerman at all. Jaylon's AWP team lost to Heuermans today I believe. I'd love to see that film if there is any around.

Jaylon is a special player and I love hearing about his performances. It seems like he blows away the competition at every event. So glad he is all Irish.
