Can we please try Butler at Safety. I would love to see a combo of Redfield and Butler back there next game with Luke and Riggs at CB and Farley in the Nickel.

Who will play CB? Riggs is hurt and can't be relied on to play the whole game.

So basically the only backup corner you would have is Watkins? I'll pass

While I understand your points, our safeties have been horrible this year and we need to find a way to improve back there. Lets say Riggs can play 60% of the plays, then you go with my line-up and when Riggs has to come off you rotate Butler down to CB and bring Shumate in or if Watkins is progressing you bring him in. Hell if Hardy is ready to go lets get him in the game at S. Maybe rotate Butler down to CB when Riggs comes out and put Hardy in at S.

I didn't realize he played so poorly against USC. I thought the whole defense got shredded in that game, so I think it's a bit unfair to pin Butler's "struggles" on mostly one game where he got beat deep a few times.

I still think he can be pretty good. He showed flashes early in the year last season. Maybe that's the problem though, is that he didn't continue to develop.

If true, I feel terrible for Butler, but the sad fact is that those kind of people are on pretty much every campus. Running away from your problems isn't going to solve anything. I'm sure Devin won't being even considering that.

That's unfortunate, but that's definitely not unique to Notre Dame.

CRYSTAL BALL

If everybody stays healthy, I think Butler’s role is that of a special teams regular, making one or two big plays throughout the season that help impact a ball game. But he’s at best a dime back with the Irish’s upgraded skill-set in the secondary, though that’s certainly not a declaration I’d put in stone, especially with guys like Crawford, Coleman and Watkins still needing to prove they can play.

Unlike some of the other veterans who had been marooned on the bench, Butler’s role in the secondary—and in the program—seems on solid footing. That’ll allow him to mentor some of the younger players coming up, even if they’ve already passed him on the depth chart.

But if injuries hit, Butler seems like the type of program player who’ll be ready if needed. And that ultimately says quite a bit about where Brian Kelly has things entering 2016.

damn it, he wasn't going to start but it's never good to lose experienced players that have started games. Will definitely be a loss on special teams.

When you've got a guy like Devin Butler that's in line to be a long-reliever if needed, you're in good shape.

This is a bummer.

16 weeks is right around beginning of Oct. He could still contribute this season. Be interesting to see what the staff decides to do at that point.

First defensive injury of 2016? On the plus side it looks like he can be back by late September/early October at least.

Jeez that stinks. Think he should red shirt this year and could contribute big time with Luke gone next year.

Sucks starting out the upcoming season with the same thing as the past few seasons ... injuries. I suppose depending on his recovery and rehab (and the status of our secondary results at that time) will dictate whether they bring Devin back into the fold for the remainder this year or use it as a red shirt season and hope for bigger and better returns next year!?

Then he will need conditioning to get game ready, won't he? I bet we have a next year situation.

I feel bad for Devin. If anything, the kid has proven he has the heart.

Not so much for anyone else.

Id say red shirt him and have him start learning the safety spot for next year.
