'12 IN QB Gunner Kiel (Cincinnati Transfer)

I heard that he had an addiction to pain killers and was sent home to go to rehab. It was serious. Wish him the best.

Opiate addiction is no joke. You start taking pain killers for an injury and the next thing you know, you're an addict. I've seen it personally with friends and co-workers in the oil field. It's rough and very common, unfortunately.

I think anyone coming back from his type of situation would have to start from the back of the depth chart and earn the starting role. You don't just give him his spot back and risk being caught with your pants down if he relapses.

I wish him luck though. My favorite QB recruit of all time.

As a UC fan, I'd rather see Moore get the job with Trail as primary backup in garbage time/spot duty to get some developmental reps.

Kiel should be 3rd string. The only way Kiel should play, IMO, is if Moore gets hurt and the team needs a long-term answer.

Ahem...

The guy has dealt with injuries almost his entire time at UC, so IDK if he's ever been fully healthy, aside from maybe his first couple of starts in 2014.

I don't know exactly when Gunner's issues started, or if they had a direct impact on his play before he went out last year, but even when he was "healthy," he was getting out-played by Moore.

So considering Gunner's health, combined with the direction the position needs to go for the program, this isn't surprising.

I hear Spencer Strasmore is struggling with this same issue. Hope GK can recover quickly.

I am a substance abuse counselor.
I'm definitely pulling for Gunner to succeed.

If the pain killer issue is true...They should shut him down, give him a medical, and keep him with the program, and do some outpatient stuff. Then let him compete next year.

This isn't new news is it? Wasn't his possible addiction reported last year?

That's what they did with him during the offseason.

He's apparently doing good and ready to go. He's just got to knock the rust off and keep his head on straight to compete for the QB job, according to everything that's been reported.

I won't lie and I have never really told anyone about this but it feels good to kind of get it off my chest because feel like it's appropriate, but please I am not looking for sympathy.

I was addicted to painkillers for a solid year and half after I had wrist surgery and it's a tough fucking thing to get over man. Not that I was on the corner looking for them but they are so easy to get. I know exactly what Gunner was going through. I took them randomly out of the blue a couple years ago and I won't ever touch those things again after that. Won't go down that road ever again because it's just not worth it . God bless Gunner and I hope you win the starting job again, I'm pulling for you this year knowing exactly the demons you have because once in awhile they still come back. Honestly if anyone is every struggling with substance abuse on this site feel free to hit me up, I am honestly hoping I don't ever get a PM but honestly don't be scared to reach out.

Glad your story has a happy ending and that you are healthy and here to be an integral part of our irish discussion.

Opiates are no joke.

I have an awesome cousin who's life is getting sucked away from him due to heroin.

Unbelievable.

Unbelievable.

A girls brother is a heroin addict and it just rips her apart sometimes. Couldn't pay me to stick a needle in my arm but you are right. It's the worst man and it just rips everyone around you apart

I knew Robb Stark had an issue.

Serious note: glad you're a head strong dude. Good job kicking the habit.

because 5,882 posts on this kid were not enough.

Kiel should officially be 3rd string.

He should only see the field if Moore goes down to injury early in the season. Otherwise Trail needs the backup reps.

I've always been a fan of Gunner, but this is a good move by Tuberville and UC.

Doesn't even have the chest to be a starter at Cincy. lol. We sure lucked out on that.

Yeah, its tough to say what would've happened if he was at ND. Might not have had the injury/concussion problems. Might not have the addiction problems. You can't deny that the kid had flashes of talent and did well at times

self-inflicted ugly sh*t

Ignorant statement. Very easy these days to get addicted to prescription meds. Then, in worse cases, the addiction leads to heroin.

I hope that those claiming the "self-inflicted" bit never have to experience the troubles these scenarios present.
