I had finally come around to the thinking he would stay and accept the split role. I should of stayed with my first impression. Personally I would have left and went to East Carolina to wing it for the pro scouts as soon as I got the diploma.
This is Malik's team, not just now but for the next 3 years. There is a very real chance there could have been major locker room problems with them both in it. It's one reason I think OSU will not be the same next year, too many chiefs in the tee pee.
In a perfect world I would have wanted him to stay and taken 25% of the snaps - and to be MZ's Tommy Rees as Tommy was for him in '12. If that would have played out harmoniously, I'd have been all for it but that comes with the risk of locker room drama. MZ's here for the next three years so it's good he gets to play and feel that the program is behind him 100%.
Let me now address the worst thing about this scenario... if or when ND loses ONE game, it will be because Golson was not there to lead the team to victory. It's a fact, so get ready for it.
One last thing... as all can see by my sig, I'm an MZ fan. (I even scooped the media and told MZ's Dad about Golson this morning) But if the roles were reversed where Golson had 3 years left and Malik had 1, I'd have wanted Golson to stay instead. This is more about the potential of the next 3 years more so than the fundamental concepts of ball security, establishing the run and being a prototypical leader at QB. Don't get me wrong, I think MZ will be better at those than EG but to me it's all about the next 3 years which I think can be Holtz era-esque. The Kelly era has been too segmented. QB questions, failures suspensions... early declare-er's, suspension and injuries to too many others. It's lining up now that besides Jalen, ND has a great core group of players who will be together for a while led by 3 years form your starting QB and the deepest OL in the game.
I wish nothing but the best for Everett at his next stop. I applaud him for the graceful way he handled his challenging career at ND. That took REAL balls to own it the way he did and he was rewarded with a piece of paper that will unlock doors for a lifetime. I will be behind him 100% next year as he showcases his skills for NFL scouts and I hope that if it is his dream to play professional football that he succeeds at the highest level possible.
Thanks for the memories Everett there were many great ones and those are the ones we remember down the road.
