Probably people who don't feel comfortable putting their eggs in the MZ basket considering he has only played 6 quarters....

In the limited snaps we've seen from Malik between spring games and this season, I think he's shown more consistency than Golson has in his 2 seasons. Obviously it's a low sample size, but Golson seems more hot and cold through the course of a game rather than an even temperature throughout. For all the talk about Golson's experience and how he has more of the playbook, he can't run the option correctly and he does a poor job with his progressions. Do we really want to bank on Golson and hope that he "gets it" next season with only a year of eligibility left, or would it make more sense to continue to develop Zaire who still has 3 left and shows a much better grasp of how to run an option and go through his receivers?

...but starting for LSU would not be a bad ending for him. I would almost argue that would be a better move for him especially since he would have his ND degree in hand.

A clear-headed EG at LSU next season could very well have the same effect Russell Wilson did on Wisconsin. I'm not comparing the two QBs, but the situations are quite similar.

Yep, and yep. Wouldn't blame him. My guess is he will be a 1A at best in a 2 QB system at ND next year, but probably a 1B. I don't want the kid to go, but if he believes he has what it takes, and believes it's a better situation for him, I couldn't blame him.

From Heisman candidate to a scrub who is going to transfer. DOUBT IT! He will be fine, he will get his confidence back and do great for the Irish next year. I would love a 2 qb system.

Does Golson think he cannot win the starting QB job back?

I understand he is looking out for himself, but it seems to me that is he running away without being chased??

In less than one month Golson has gone from starter to "sure fire transfer." He still has 5 months left on campus plus spring ball before having to make his choice.

Let's pump the brakes here a bit. MZ has played 6 quarters of football, most likely with a limited play book. Losing Golson would be fairly concerning. I am glad MZ has "looked " better compared to Golson but let's not get ahead of ourselves.

Very true. IMO Golson would excel with a change in scenery.

Personally I hope he stays. He goes and you know what will happen,------- Malik running all over the place, tears his MCL in game 3 or whatever and season is done. Having both and playing both looked pretty good in the bowl game to me!

If ND 2013 taught us anything, or if Ohio State 2014 teaches us anything, it is that one quality QB is not enough. Kelly needs to do everything possible to keep EG here.

Having said that, I do think Zaire is the guy to start, but then I would have benched EG for a half after the Arizona State game.

This is what I don't get. It seems to me like - right now - Golson and Zaire are each about one half of a truly great college quarterback. And unlike, say, Tommy Rees, each has the ability to develop the other half with a few minor fixes.
If Golson's confidence is really so battered that he can't see how to improve on that other half, then maybe he should leave. But it seems like he ought at least stick through spring ball and see where things go. We're way better off with both of them.

He can throw far enough:

Not everyone needs to be as talented as Jamarcus Russell. We don't need Golson.

He threw that ball 35 yards. I don't know how strong his arm is but this isn't really a good example for proving that Malik can throw far enough.

All kidding aside I think this kid is still one of the best in the country with a story yet to be completed. I hope like hell he doesn't go somewhere else to finish his college story. Certainly not a place like LSU. In many ways he was a guy who had too much put on him by a team that had no defense after game 7. Kelly knows what he's doing-you can bet on that. I hope he stays-he's still the most talented athlete on the field.

+1. EG's done a lot of good things for the program. Whatever role he plays next year, I'll feel a lot better if he's wearing the gold helmet again.

That being said, I hope he tears it up wherever he plays next year. Even if it's (throws up in mouth) LSU.

I know the SEC has loosened their requirements somewhat for graduate transfers, but I was still under the impression the player had to have two years of eligibility left. I guess they changed that as well. Even still, EG would have to get a waiver since he did not remain eligible the entire time during his undergraduate time. And getting that waiver takes time, isn't a guarantee, and could affect his decision as to whether he wants to pursue LSU or go to another school where the waiver would not be necessary. Or maybe he just finishes up at Notre Dame... which is what he should do IMO.

Transferring to LSU or any other school doesn't guarantee him being a starter. He'd have to learn a new system and when you're already fumble and INT prone that just makes it that much more difficult. As has been mentioned, his best bet still lies at ND.

Regardless of where he finishes his college career, I just don't see him making the final cut on any NFL roster.

You have just made a very good argument in defense of starting Zaire. But I don't think the debate is about who the starter will be; I think the debate is about whether or not the team would be better with Golson on the roster. And I don't think that there is any question but what it would. So you like Zaire in there in front of Golson? What happens if Zaire goes down? You'd rather have an untested true freshman QB back there, instead of Golson? That's not a defensible stance, in my opinion.

What about Kizer? Your point is still very well taken.
