Assuming he could have squeezed in a 7th rep at 495, that puts his squat max around 600 pounds. I would be pretty surprised if that wasn't the top number in the linebacker room already. Freakish strength for a freshman.

about 200 pounds inflated if we’re counting that as squats.

I saw on Twitter there were some Penn State players going crazy over one of their players doing squats this week. Pretty sure that guy was doing half squats, Jaiden is not. He's doing down to a full seated position basically, 90 degree angle on his knees. If that's not a squat, I want to know what a squat is. Any farther and you could be looking at knee damage, loss of balance, who knows.

Hey I’m just telling you what the real deal is. I get it, it’s hard to criticize anything ND Balis is a top notch coach but that was not a real squat on the video.

I would love for you to tell that to Ausberry’s face

Shit I didn’t know Paul Longo went blind 4 years ago. That sucks to put it mildly. He was a very excellent S&C coach over the years too. Took us into the 21st century compared to Weis’s program.

Deep squats are horrible for you long term & many pro athletes and trainers have quit doing them.
Power lifters & body builders can do them all they want, but they aren’t good for athletes.
And lifting doesn’t equal real life strength, especially if you have to wrap up, put on braces, etc…
Watch the training the special units in the military & pro fighters do, it’s mostly low weight, high reps, high sets. And you won’t find overall body strength more than in those two groups. Getting muscles to work with joints, ligament, tendons, cardio, etc… is the most important thing.
Ausberry doesn’t need to go deeper with that much weight unless he wants chronic pain by 20.

Players were notoriously seeking extra workouts outside of Longo’s S&C program because a few felt that he wasn’t preparing them enough for games during the season.

Yup. If you read up on it, the 90 degree mark was not based on physiology, but on the need for an external standard for squatting competitions.

The reality is that people's bodies are different. Some can handle very deep squats well. Some can't. A lot of guys who are drawn to the gym are the guys with the right proportions for the conventional lifts, and they just generalize from there.

To be fair, all the photos on that chart are squats. It's just showing different depths of squats.

I mean I haven’t sat down and discussed his philosophy with Balis. I concede athletic training is different from power training and you may not want to extend past 90 for non-pros due to negative impact on other muscles if their technique goes wrong.
Just understand squats mean different things to different people when you hear these big numbers getting floated around.

Generally the lower you go the more muscles and muscle mass you are going to activate. You’re going to be going lower number of weight though and obviously over-use in anything can have detrimental impacts on the body.

So, you're saying that your fly-by, quick critique may have been premature?
