I was actually hoping he would play WILL LB. That way he could use his speed to chase and run down plays.I thought he might get poached in the prior few weeks but he stayed true. I see the MLB of the future right there, this man is going places and I hope he lets us ride with him for some of it.
i get starting the old folk at LB vs Navy game one on the road, but I sure hope the young LBs get a lot of reps vs Tenn State
We did that last year, and paid for it IMO. Freeman didn't do that 2 years ago when we absolutely whipped them. Junior didn't play well vs navy despite playing a good bit. I do think having JD out hurt as well. Henderson struggled as well.Honestly, it seems like the Navy game every year is now the game where the staff finds at least one young linebacker and one young safety to operate as the anti-option specialists.
We might see a guy like Ausberry get a bunch of reps right away against Navy, only to take a step back once more traditional opponents hit the schedule in the early half of the year.

As long as they stay disciplined and follow their assignments, i.e. don't fall for the misdirection eye candy, they should be good, I agree. Definitely going to be interesting with a new offensive staff, but I think once the boys settle in, it'll be a long evening for Navy. ND should score at will. Also, I love this roster versus Navy. No reason they shouldn't be able to lock them down. Plenty of versatility in the defensive backfield and front 7 to make it a long day for the Midshipmen.
I know nothing about their new coaching staff, but is it safe to assume they will be keeping the triple option? As long as they stay disciplined and follow their assignments, i.e. don't fall for the misdirection eye candy, they should be good, I agree. From the small amount of research I've seen on here and other sources, they will stick with the bread-and-butter option, but some people expect them to pass the ball a little more than we're accustomed to.I know nothing about their new coaching staff, but is it safe to assume they will be keeping the triple option?
Games are won by causing the other team to make mistakes and limiting yours. The youngsters are usually the ones making the mistakes, but I do agree that you need to get them some reps. Enough for them to grow, but not too many to expose yourself.I'd get Ausberry and Bowen on the field as much as possible - whether special teams or some defensive play late in games.
Pound for pound, they have more raw talent and athleticism than what ND is currently trotting out there.
The main problem would be these young guys fully grasping and understanding the defensive scheme, play calls, check downs, and audibles - especially against a team like Navy. Hell, even Freeman and Golden can't truthfully say they'll know what Navy will run, not run, and so forth.
But I agree, get your talent on the field and reps anyway you can. Once you're midway in the season, you may need them or be able to incorporate them into the games more and more.
Right. Playing a couple freshmen to get them reps shouldn't break your team. Having over half your offensive starters be Sophomores and Freshmen is how you increase your chance for mistakes and lose to a team like Marshall. Sometimes it's unavoidable when the previous OC dropped the ball in recruiting like Long did.Games are won by causing the other team to make mistakes and limiting yours. This is why it always drove me nuts that Kelly absolutely refused to blow people out. We’d get up two scores and he’d start eating clock no matter the situation. If you can put teams away early you can get your young guys more meaningful reps.Right. Playing a couple freshmen to get them reps shouldn't break your team. Clarence Lewis played a ton last year in the game so did Henderson… If they’re on the field a lot again, that will tell me a lot about this season defensively… Mickey has ability just had no clue what he was doing last yearAlso, I love this roster versus Navy. Imma take Balis giving it the "good" that he was getting deep enough. That’s not a real squat. Got to get 90 degrees or lower. Try again Ausberry.
