I’ll say something nice about Drew. He’s not as short as people make him out to be. I stood about 10 feet from him yesterday when he was warming up. I’m 6 ft, we were about eye to eye. He’s not tall, but the “he’s shorter than 5’11”” take isn’t true.
He’s 5’5” 130 pounds. Stop the propaganda.

Ryan outting himself here. Been calling himself 6 ft, really he's 5'8".

Cleats add almost two inches and I’m sure he had lifts in those shoes.

Good idea, I can't believe they haven't even thought of that before, hopefully they heed your advice and go out there and try that. Make him a five star, while they're at it.

What idiots for not considering it sooner
Well, Rees did take 5-11 Buchner over 6-3 McCarthy.
And thumbed his nose at 6-5 Allar. So…

I see the point you are trying to make, but you shouldn't incorrectly post something to help your argument. Buchner is 6'1" and has been listed as such on the ND website the last two seasons.

Really thought Drew had his confidence starting from the 2nd half of Cal. Last two games have been disappointing, but you've got to hope he gets it figured out if Angeli isn't ready. He and the WRs just couldn't seem to consistently hook up Saturday, and the outside passing game should have been side open with a single safety in the middle of the field all day. I posted it in the Rees thread, but Lenzy made a great play on a deep route to get inside the corner, no help from the safety, and Drew just overthrew him instead of leading him inside. We couldn't execute it, so UNLV had no reason not to load up the box with their extra safety.

They need to lock Pyne in the practice facility with Styles, Lenzy, and Merriweather and have him throw 100 balls to each receiver every day. Not even kidding. Just practice making the actual throws and catches. The play calls and game plan don't matter if you can't throw and catch the ball.

Drew definitely left quite a few points on the field Saturday from a combination of things.

Back to work this week and hope for improvement in Syracuse.

Buchner has also always been pretty built whereas JJ was the lanky kid and I think more like 6’1 - 6’2 when he was being evaluated.

JJ basically had that little growth spurt and filled out which perfectly translated to increased potential on the field that we’d have hoped someone else got..

Road/neutral Pyne > home Pyne, so the evidence suggests. I'm not sure why we have had lackluster efforts at home this year, but it's concerning. Saturday was an improvement, at least they started the game with a pulse, but that was a sleepy game against the worst team on our schedule that was never really in doubt? But it felt like we should've won by 50, yet at one point it the second half UNLV had it down to two scores.

This team can dominate at times but then it gets dominated at other times. Really perplexing.

Maybe the answer is start Drew in Away games, and start Angeli at Home...or just run Wildcat/TE Sneak at Home

Something I'm confused by: so look, obviously we're all happy with Drew's "game management" over the past few weeks. But at the same time it is clear he plainly can't run the whole offense, and severely limits what we can do in terms of playcalling and game planning. But my question is: why?? Drew was a four star recruit, or in other words, the type of QB 90% of Division One programs would kill for. Shouldn't he have enough baseline talent to at the very least run the whole offense and exploit the talent around him? Has he just failed to develop in the way we wanted at ND?

Why? because hes little and not strong?

Not all 4*'s are created equal

Seems like an obvious answer to a strange question.

He failed to continue growing. He was a 4-star with lots of interest from legitimate P5 programs as a sophomore. Much of that was projection based on the assumption that he would add a couple inches, improve his arm strength, etc. That didn't happen, so now he's a 5'9'' QB who can't see over his OL and lacks the athletic tools to compensate for that weakness.

Ahhh okay that makes sense. So his physical development just didn't pan out the way it was projected when he was 16. Was just kinda surprised he's like, so not up to the task

Yep. He was really high rated as a freshman, one of the most sought after QB recruits actually. He stockpiled some big time offers, including Bama.

However if you read the tea leaves, those offers became basically non-commitable by his junior and senior year. It had became obvious he stopped growing and progressing when he was like 15 years old.

He somehow hung on to his 4 stars, probably based on those offers out there, but he really wasn't a 4 star QB by the time he signed with ND. His arm talent and size are just mediocre, at best. It's not his fault, or the staff's fault really for the way he developed. He is just very limited.

Nothing to say besides a random bump, but I just checked, and Drew Pyne has three years of eligibility left AFTER this season. He is technically a redshirt-freshman this year. He was a freshman during the COVID year, and last season, he only took snaps in two games.

Whether he stays or goes after this season, or more appropiately after next season with his degree in hand, the guy has another three years of college football.

I have a funny feeling we're going to look back on Pyne and appreciate him a lot like we did Ian Book.

But time will tell. Crazy to think how little game experience he actually has, feels like he's been here for a long while.

In a sense he has. Pyne committed to Notre Dame in April of 2018. That was a long while ago.

If he for whatever reason sticks it out and plays through the 2025 season, that has to be about the longest tenured player in the history of Notre Dame football. A contrast with the kids who commit on Signing Day and declare for the draft at the postgame press conference for the bowl game of their third season.
