I think Riley is a top 15 coach who can be really dangerous at USC with the talent pool they have in their back yard and the low level of competition in the PAC12. I don't think him going there immediately makes them a threat to ND, but say goodbye to our days of poaching skill position guys from Cali.

Nobody bit here but to clarify, I believe this was a Fickell reference. I guess Godfrey mentions a lot Fickell is very Catholic on his pod and the timing thing is a reference to Fickell appears completely uninterested in talking during UCs season

Just for my own curiosity, I looked up the overall offensive F+ rating for Oklahoma to see if a trend emerges. Interesting that there has been a 3 year decline. Now, the 1.64 and 1.44 is still really good (ND has really only been at the level once under BK (2015) and there really wasn't a way to keep up with Kyler Murray performance of 2018. But this past year was the worst since Riley came to OU and it's fair to wonder if this is a sign of why he left.

2015 - 1.56
2016 - 2.46
2017 - 3.01
2018 - 3.18
2019 - 2.32
2020 - 1.64
2021 - 1.44

Now here is the defense for those years. Grinch had a strong year in 2020, but the other two year were rather bad. I think him following is a net positive for ND.

2015 - 1.25
2016 - 0.39
2017 - 0.29
2018 - (0.41) - yes, that is a negative
2019 - 0.26
2020 - 1.35
2021 - 0.15

Not worried. They don't play defense in the Big 12 or Pac 12. They will get back to being the top dog in the Pac 12, but when it comes to the playoffs they will be in for a surprise.

He's 67 years old, so maybe he just wants to be retired, but a call to Dave Cutcliffe asking to be an analyst is worth a shot, no?

Yeah, if you have money to burn, you’d be crazy not to pay him whatever he wants to come be a QB coach or analyst.

True but it's not like he hasn't been interested in ND in the past.

That's fair. I think ND should definitely ask. Who knows, maybe he's enticed by the opportunity to mentor a young coach like Rees instead the transparent attempts to buy his relationship with the Mannings.

IMO Oklahoma is danger of becoming a Tennessee level program if they get this hire wrong with their move to the SEC. They don't sit in a particularly talent rich area and they don't bring anything unique to the table that Texas / TAMU / LSU can't offer for Texas & Louisiana recruits.

It may seem like USC has won the coaching carousel at the moment for 2021, but I suspect Billy Napier will end up bringing a lot more success to Florida than Riley will to USC.

Agreed.

Heupel is pissed he got fired as OU OC and his buyout is $8M.

This might be where OU goes to Brett Venables and gets their defense fixed as they head to the SEC.

OU fans on /r/cfb are using Nebraska as the cautionary tale--a once great program leaves the Big-12, makes a couple bad hires at HC, and now seems destined to perpetual mediocrity. Jumping from the Big-12 to the SEC will surely be an even rougher transition than Nebraska's jump to the B1G.

OU is in danger of becoming Nebraska. Texas may well be on that trajectory too.

Like you said, where do they go for talent? Tennessee HS talent is on the rise and it's becoming more populated there. OU has tornadoes and fracking earthquakes. Riley's offense was the main draw. Now he's gone and they're going into a conference where, as you hit the nail on the head, they will not be unique.

Riley made a very smart move here.

Could be a difference maker in Buechner's development as a QB too.

Rhett Lashlee to SMU.

If Miami can go for Cristobal, now might be the time.

I don't know if I agree with this,... time will tell.

The difference is that Nebraska left the Big 12, and their presence in Texas, for the midwest where talent is arguably less plentiful and logistics may be more problematic. The Sooners are actually putting themselves in a position to play more games where there is a greater concentration of talent and they are not completely abandoning their presence in Texas. Not sure how they align the SEC going forward but there's a strong chance they'll play a game in Texas at least once a year after the change. They may still have the same issues as NE with logistics but they will have a greater presence in the most talent rich states in the nation.

There's still a chance this move backfires but it may be for different reasons than Nebraska.

Venables to OU picking up steam.

Forgot him in my initial list lol. Must be the one he was always waiting on. Makes sense entering the SEC
