Did I legit miss that Riley & LSU 100% will not happen?

I've never seen anyone pass on 5 million dollars per.

1. Well...shit.

2. This is exactly what USC said when ND hired Kelly.

3. Lincoln is incredibly smart to bypass the SEC for the weak PAC12 and a much easier path to success.

Well, maybe a hint of good news is that unless Oklahoma hires another offensive genius, their offensive recruiting might fall off enough that we don't have to recruit against both USC and Oklahoma for offensive skill talent.

Good recruiter. As a coach? I’m not really sure.

Good recruiter. As a coach? I’m not really sure.

His strengths do not line up with USC’s areas that need improvement. I can’t call it a bad hire due to his record as a head coach but I wouldn’t have been scared of ND playing His Oklahoma teams every year - though I’m not saying I expect ND to win them all.

Don’t know why you keep turning any Lincoln news into an indictment on ND. Really stretching it, don’t understand really the relevance at all

Because I remember many coaching searches and Kelly trying to leave for the NFL. Every time someone mentioned any name coach on the internet, they would get laughed at.

And now we have people downplaying USC or LSU pulling this off by saying saying Oklahoma really isn't that good of a program.

ND can't get a big name coach and everybody says 'why would anyone leave their current program to come here'

USC gets Lincoln fucking Riley and it's 'pays more.
LSU almost gets him and it's 'LSU can recruit better. Oklahoma is becoming 'Nebraska'.

Some programs and some AD"s seem to be able to get pretty much whoever they want it seems.

It’s been 12 years since we had a coaching search and we got the hottest coach out there at the time. We still talking about Urban in ‘05?

Nobody mentioned Riley to USC until it happened, so why does the narrative around theoretical coaching searches for theoretical times BK left matter? FO

My dream is Texas paying $24 Mil to dump Herman and then lose to him in the Red River Shootout 2 years later. Tom Herman would be a great pick for OU.

Every time? Really? Don’t be so dramatic. Sure, when people bring up guys like Urban, Saban, or Dabo, it’s going to be laughed at. Not so for others. In fact, I seem to remember Stoops being in real play last time.

Wow. I absolutely did not see this coming at all, but it makes sense. Riley is a much better fit at USC than he'd have been in an SEC bound OK. He can be the biggest fish in recruiting out west instead of battling Saban, Smart, and the rest of the gang in the SEC. His brand of soft defense was never going to fly in the SEC either, but will be fine in the PAC 12. Good move by him and USC. The Trojans may become relevant again.

He's gonna recruit the shit out of offense at USC. Curious to see what he does with staff, especially on defense. Alex Grinch joining him or nah?

Do we get a game of chicken happening now? Lincoln didn’t want the SEC, clearly. Mario has had a nice gig up in Oregon with Helton at USC. Does he make his Miami jump to avoid his recruiting falling down?

I don't know that he wants to go home. Miami is a mess and the conditions that made them The U a generation ago aren't necessarily in play any longer. I don't know that anyone can get them back to their former level. I haven't heard it mentioned anywhere else, but I think he'd be a good fit at LSU.

For OU, I’d think Stoops, Bob and Mark, Campbell, Simmons their OC, Heupel, Grinch and Beamer all are the easy name mentions. I wonder if this becomes a bit of a PR hire though, tough to send a message we’re gonna enter the SEC with the UK, South Carolina or Tennessee coach. Don’t know the splash hire they could try.

Miami was a nothing program when Howard S. took over in the 70s. The notion that Miami is "dead" is comical to me. All the school needs to do is win South Florida recruits over FSU and Florida and they are golden. The right coach will have them winning the ACC every year within 4 years.

Apparently OU is interested in Sonny Dykes.... who as of right now is set to be announced as TCU's next coach.

This is you right? - "If Lincoln Riley goes to LSU, that's about as lateral as you can get. Oklahoma is even the better historical program" Post #1138 in this thread

So you go to a Private School - has academic requirements that are much higher than OU..... OU is currently top 10 in 2022 recruiting to a school that is in the 60's in recruiting... you have to build a staff.... I don't get it outside of greed.

Dominate the Pac-12 in recruiting and on the field. Annual national title contender. More money. Don't have to compete in the SEC. USC will never be out of the top 5 nationally in recruiting again...

Seems obvious to me:

Much easier to get in the playoffs through the Pac-12 rather than the SEC.

USC can easily recruit 5 star talent across the board with a competent coach.

Get paid a shit ton and live in Southern California.

This. It’s all about getting the right HC. As I’ve noted before on other threads, lost of schools seemed directionless or “dead” until the right guy was hired.

Remember these guys?

John Blake at OU
John Machovic at UT
Gerry DiNardo at LSU
Paul Hackett at SC
Mike Shula or Mike Dubose or Mike Price or Dennis Franchione at Bama

Then these guys came along and NCs followed:

Bob Stoops
Mack Brown
Nick Saban
Pete Carroll
Nick Saban

Getting the right HC turns a moribund program into a contender quicker than we like to admit.

SC takes plenty of JUCOs so I doubt Riley is worried about “academics”.

SC recruits itself when the right guy as at the helm and even starts attracting kids from the east of the Mississippi.

The Pac12 is the a less path of resistance to a championship both in conference & the CFP.

Being at SC, if he can get his offense rolling, it should buy him some time while the defense get built up. That’s easier to do in LA County vs having to hit multiple states for recruits.

Maybe you're right. I tend to overreact to bad news. And I think this is really bad news for ND.
