He was open over the middle one time and Zaire went to Brown over the middle iirc.

He played quite a bit of first team reps after the drop. I don't put anything into that drop - that's a really tough catch when it's a short pass on a rope and you're turning at the same time it's thrown.

it seemed like he went into the game on a specific formation to the right off the OL detached about 4/5 feet from McGlinchey.

Alize will have his first catch against Virginia. He still played and I'm sure he & Kelly will talk about his drop but the young man just had a drop.

True freshman, under the lights, against Texas, I'm chalking that one up to nerves. Now he's ready.

Kelly addressed this on Sunday's Teleconference saying they were expecting stuff like that to happen to the freshmen. He said it's a non factor and that guys like Alize and CJ are in there for a reason.

Great to hear. By every report I've read, Aliz'e is a hard-working young man and drops will happen, especially to the younger guys as they work out those first nerves. I expect him to be solid to spectacular as we move forward.

Watching Howard rip it up last night, I was thinking Alize has the tools to be that player for us before he leaves. Hope he starts to make a serious impact next year.

Not gonna lie, at this time of year, I was terrified to open this thread.

I do agree with what you said. Alize has all the makings to be a big part of this offense especially with the top three receivers leaving.

It was interesting because before last night.. Aliz'e and OJ had the same number of TDs this season.

I could have swore I heard in the post game interview that prior to the game OJ hadn't scored a TD since 2013.

Freshman year iirc. Underutilized in our offense as he is huge and quick for a TE. But he is also prone to drop a few balls as well plus his blocking skills are below average - even though he has gotten better the last year.

As far as Aliz'e, I keep waiting for him to find the Eifert seam. It just seems like that is open a lot but underutilized by the Irish offense.

TE's in general were underutilized in the passing game this past season. A total of 20 receptions for the TE's (13 of those to Jones) thru 13 games is sort of ridiculous IMO.

I think Kelly is finally adjusting to the personel on hand. Alize was worked into the offense effectively, but there was no all-around TE that he could build on.

Yea, OJ hasn't produced like you'd expect from a guy that was said to be the TE equivalent of Jaylon Smith.

There are two reasons for his performance this year. He's a freshman (we sometimes expect too much out of them) and we switched QB's. I can see the TE getting worked into the offense much more next year.

Spot on again #1. I think it's a given. The 4 returning TE's will have 2x - 3x(?) the snaps the entire WR corp will have had.

He's gonna win so many jump balls down the field that it's gonna be stupid.

per rivals has been taking more reps at the W position. Much like Eifert

Good, anything to get him away from Booker. I would be okay if our TEs just rotated between Harry and Denbrock. Use the extra coach to focus on having elite Special Teams.

This. Our TEs have steadily been regressing since Booker took over, despite having quite a lot of talent. Most teams would kill to have the TEs we've recruited.

Glad I am not the only one anti Booker

Is it really Booker or more along the lines of the game plan and emphasis to get the ball downfield with a guy like Fuller?

The latter. Booker may not yet be the coach Denbrock was, but he is pretty good. Also, the offense has deemphasized tight end play, and who has been up to the Rudolph, Eifert standard since? Koyack? Niklas? Luatua? Hell no!

I have no idea how good a coach Booker is, but I agree that we have definitly not had the talent that we previously had.

Also...

- Rudolph spent a lot of his career hurt. I think his career was a little over-rated based on the fact that he was clearly going to have a long career in the NFL and keep our streak alive.

- Eifert spent his first two years hurt, and came on big time late. NFL scouts still refer to him as a freak of nature. I could have coached him.

- Niklas had trmendous size, but played defense his freshman year and left before he really developed. He was developing fine.

- Koyack was, by all acounts, distracted and a little undersized. He was not the heir apparent.

- Smyth was not as highly ranked as Rudoph, Koyack, or Niklas, and has been injured on and off for years.

- Weishar is still young nad has been putting on the weight.

- Luatua was short and a little slow and very young.

- His other two guys were converted Dlinemen.

IMO, this is the first year we'll see what Booker can do.

Any success Booker has had with our TEs (Rudolph/Eifert) has come from guys that were originally coached by Bernie Parmalee. Niklas was probably the best to come from his own teaching and I wouldn't say he was a world beater. We'll see what he does with Jones, but I honestly think Jones was a can't miss talent before he showed up in South Bend. Booker has had arguably more talent to work with at his position than anyone else in the country the last 6 years, yet we're steadily declining in TE production.

Since when is 6'5", 255 lbs undersized?

When you go to TEU and spend almost all of this time pass blocking and you don't have a mean streak. I agree that its not small, but he wasn't striking fear in the hearts of opponents as a maulers like Niklas or Stanford's TEs. And that was his role. He was supposed to be more of an all-around threat, like Fasano or Carlson but he just wasn't. He needed to be either bigger or faster, like Rudolph or Eifert.

Also Mike Golic and Zach Martin were listed as basically the same size in the 2012 roster, and I felt Golic was a little undersized. Maybe that's argumentative, but I think it showed on their field.
