1. CL
8. SU
9. ND
15. So. Cal

Notre Dame will play only three true road games (at Texas, NC State and USC) in 2016, along with neutral-site games against Syracuse, Navy and Army.

Was looking at the schedule last night. I think it lines up very favorably for ND.

It's a lot of starters to replace, but I bolded the guys who IMO aren't even as good as the people who will be replacing them.

That our defense next year could be worse than this year.

It also could be better. Lots of guys got their feet wet this year and there were some really good athletes waiting in the wings and/or coming off injuries (Crawford, Jones, .

Jaylon Smith will be impossible to replace with one guy, but we have a good group of young guys who have skills. I think one or two of them could step up and help make up for the lost production -- 114 tackles. Coney, Bilal, Bajaras, Hayes, Kelly (fingers crossed), all have a shot at contributing to the lost production.
Joe Schmidt will not be difficult to replace. IMO any other linebacker who will be on the team could replace and improve Joe's production on the field. The MLB should, in most cases, lead the team in tackles. Schmidt had, what, half the tackles that Smith had? I find it difficult to believe that any other LB on the team would be that unproductive. Plus, he was terrible in coverage. Maybe he will be missed in the locker room (although I have some doubts about this) but the guys that ND has recruited at LB over the past few cycles are all better athletes that Schmidt. Hopefully the staff will put the best guys on the field next year.
Jarrett Grace provided some good depth coming off the bench this year, particularly against Navy and OSU. His leadership will be missed more than his production. Again, we have a lot of athletes who are going to step in next year with fire in their eyes.
Matthias Farley will be difficult to replace, and we will be think at safety next year. Hopefully Redfield finally puts it together in his senior season or some of the young guns step up and surprise. But, we didn't get a ton of production out of the safety position this season anyway. Won't take much to at least equal that production. Here's hoping some of the 6 or 7 DBs we are bringing in will come ready to compete.
Elijah Shumate was always one of my favorites, and he had a decent season. See comments under Farley.
KeiVarae Russell had a surprisingly unproductive season and at times even seemed like a liability in coverage. I think guys like Crawford, Watkins, and maybe some of the true freshmen next season will step up, just like KVR did when he was a freshman.
Romeo Okwara had a big year. Too bad his redshirt was burned as a freshman, because he'd be a nice piece to bring back next year. Trumbetti has been productive at times this year, and hopefully he can make some strides toward consistency that will make up for Romeo's lost production. I like Kareem coming in next year to help get after QBs.
Sheldon Day was the heart of the DL, and his production will be difficult to replace. However, Jones coming back healthy will be huge for ND. Would have be awesome to have them both in the lineup this season, but that ship has sailed and presumably been burnt at some point during the year. I think Jones, at least, minimizes the huge loss of Day. If he comes in hungry, he could have a big year for us next year. Cage will continue to progress as well, I think. We need a few young guys to step up in the interior, but that seems to be the case every year.

All in all, while we lose a lot of talent, we have a lot of talent coming in behind them, too. We also have some pretty good productive players coming back. We might start off a little worse off, but as these guys gain experience, I expect the D to be much more athletic next year overall.

Aside from losing Jaylon, I think the defensive side of the ball could be a lot of "addition by subtraction."

The defensive scheme will almost surely need to be simplified to accommodate the new starters at LB and in the secondary. That should allow the new guys, even if they are inexperienced, to fly around and use their athleticism without slowing down and over-thinking things.

I was watching Jaylon's freshman highlights last night after I watched his farewell video. I don't know enough schematically to know whether or not I'm right, but it made me think that a defense somewhere between Diaco's conservative system and BVG's attacking system would be perfect for our athletes.

I got the feeling while watching Jaylon play in Diaco's system that BVG didn't really maximize his defense by letting Jaylon move around and use his different talents. Perhaps this was because they absolutely needed Jaylon to do certain things all year, or perhaps it was because the guys around him didn't free him up often enough.

Either way, I think a simplified system will help put the superior athletes in better positions to maximize their talents. Hopefully the departures will lead to that.

He was second on the team in tackles, with 78, about 75% of Smith's number, not "what, half the tackles Smith had?".

It's too bad we couldn't have this year's team with next year's schedule. On paper, that's 12-0 unless you think we lose to overrated MSU (I'm saying playing Stanford at home is worth the points).

LSU will have a lot of experienced elite talent next year.

But they return their same coach. And they will be on their third DC in three years. The talent is there but is the coaching there at this point?

My prediction?

Everybody gets injured. Kelly is forced to suit up at Linebacker like the old days, and fans will complain that BVG doesn't get the chance to take the field because Kelly does a better job "lining everyone up."

These rankings are always hard b/c you never know if they're ranking the team or predicting an outcome against a schedule.
B/c for talent and team, given what we're losing, 15 seems fair (remember every other team loves their young talented backups too...).
But with our schedule next year we probably ought to win 10 or 11, which feels like a top ten regular season finish and maybe the playoff hunt again just like this year.

I think Michigan will be a bit better next year. They have O'Korn from Houston at QB who had a great year in 2013 as a true frosh and is probably more talented than Rudock. It will be year 2 of the Harbaugh system. They return a lot on offense. The schedule is still easy. MSU/OSU are on the road but will be worse. I could see 10-2 or maybe 11-1.

16 seams correct, 9 is way to high in my opinion. Right now we are not a top 10 team in what we have returning. We have to over achieve in my opinion. It can be done, but we usually chokein big situations. Reg season 2012 the shining moment of goodness.

Saying that, we can rise up and blow people away too.

But, lb issues/db issues/no fuller true replacement
/and losing cj/no pass rush last year and lost pass rusher romeo. Those are huge issues.

No matter what still support, but I don't have high hopes. So many teams return much better teams

According to UND, Schmidt was 4th in tackles on the team with 65 to Jaylon's 112. Shumate (66) and Redfield (68) also had more tackles that Schmidt. Schmidt finished with 58% of Jaylon's total while playing a position from which he should have led the team in tackles. In case you were wondering, 58% is much closer to "half" than 75%.

They also play at Iowa which should be down and they open the B1G at home against PSU and Wisco. That's much tougher than ND's schedule next year.

I do want to mention, they start the season off with 5 home games, the 3 before PSU, Wisco?

Hawaii, UCF, Colorado. Combined record? 7-31.

They should officially be eliminated from the playoffs right now.

12-1 and a B1G championship will get them in the playoffs no matter who they play OOC. Not saying that will happen, but the blue-blood B1G and SEC teams can pretty much play anyone they want out of conference and get in with 1 loss IMO.

Here is my rant:

until the culture/mindset changes and the coaching staff stops trying to play quantum physics on the field....it doesn't matter.

I am probably one of the most optimistic posters on IE (most of the time), but enough is enough already.

We could sign 25 5stars every year and find a way to F it up.

If we are not going to play the best players on the team after being on the team for 2 years because they can't grasp the game....well we are F'd!

Simplify the damn game. Let the kids play the game. With our current roster we should be pounding the hell out of teams with a running game, dominating time of possession, and forcing teams into playing catch up and throwing more.

Anyway, it just pisses me off watching Alabama play such a simple game and win all the time. Watching Clemson do what seems so obvious..run the QB and throw short gimmie routes and take what the D gives you.

Our intellectual / business approach that starts with Kelly's demeanor isn't going to win us a NC!

Sorry, but the Ohio St. game was a disgrace! Coaching staff was absolutely pathetic...

Injuries...yeah whatever. Look at the killer instinct our players had taking the field....there was ZERO!

How do you explain our playing down to the competition every week? Sure we play a tough schedule, sure we get everyone's best, sure... what BS! The BC game was laughable.

I don't know if it is ego, trying to build a nfl resume, or what, but enough is enough. We have got to make some serious changes and those changes have to come from the neck up. Recruiting class rankings mean nothing at this point.

this year was the 7th worst defense in Notre Dame History
Last year was the WORST!!!

Look at the talent we have on the field and explain the SH!T!

Damnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn. Seriously, Irishman77 could see a flower in a shitstorm, so this really is shocking. I agree with some (defense - ugh), disagree with other points (Alabama is on another level with talent and coaching and still barely won; we had Clemson on the ropes at their house - our offense was just as potent so I'm not sure what the envy is about their offense; injuries do matter. They just do. I don't see how anyone can say they don't), but Irishman definitely brought it strong.
