Tommy Rees had a higher winning percentage as a starter than Golson did, so hardly a bad comparison.

Sophomore and junior year stats combined equal 4,583 yards passing, 48 touchdowns, just 12 interceptions and a 104.1 rating playing in the state’s toughest league according to MaxPrep

his team this fall willl be a more fast-paced, no-huddle, spread offense with some read option to take advantage of all his skills

three-year varsity lacrosse player earning All-League honors as an attacker

Has anyone started to speculate this is a package deal?

Lamar Jackson would make a fine roommate as part of the package. They play in the same conference and I certainly wouldn't complain if he could flip Jonah Williams from Bama. He's a Top 5 OT and he's right next door at powerhouse Folsom who was the #5 team in the country last year and had Jake Browning who set a lot of national passing records before heading off to Washington.

Don't know if anybody mentioned it but it sounds like he's a pretty good Lacrosse player too. So who needs Jack Coan in '17! (That's for Lax)

So is it a good move for the Irish? Sure, why not. Insurance policy on the field. RKG on and off. Ivy League offered so he's more equipped than most to deal with the rigors of daily ND life.

But what did the Irish pass on to end up with Book in '16?

Brandon Peters? Never went all in on the #8 Comp Pro QB in the country. Maybe?

Devon Modster? Never offered the #10 Comp Pro QB who's OC last year was ND alum Oscar McBride who said they could have him if they offer and he's athlete enough to make a switch down the road if QB isn't his thing.

Patrick O'Brien? The #15 Comp Pro QB who would have said yes the Irish offered or at least that's the word here.

Aidan Smith? Top 30 Pro QB from Fort Wayne who starred like O'Brien on the 7v7 circuit and led his FW team to the IMG national championship. Another RKG on and off, he's headed to Northwestern.

It will be interesting to see how all this plays out, how Ian performs for the Irish... how Hunter plays out... how he performs at ND if he chooses the Irish. How the others I listed pan out at their chosen schools.

Ian Book seems to be a great choice for what '16 called for and maybe gets Sanford's foot further in the door with Lamar Jackson and the rest of the NorCal players like Najee Harris next year when the Irish have an impressive record to point to. There's a lot of good football played from the East Bay up I-80 through Sacramento on to about Auburn (vomit), 2 of the Top 5 teams nationally last year.

Congratulations Ian and welcome aboard!

<blockquote class="twitter-tweet" lang="en"><p lang="en" dir="ltr">What is Notre Dame getting in Ian Book? Tim Prister goes to the tape to examine the three-star quarterback. <a href="http://t.co/X2UHhNXzpF">http://t.co/X2UHhNXzpF</a></p>— Irish Illustrated (@PeteSampson_) <a href="https://twitter.com/PeteSampson_/status/629098706411765761">August 6, 2015</a></blockquote>

• SUMMARY: The three-star tag on Ian Book can only be as a result of his stature or lack there of and, perhaps to some extent, a lack of great open-field speed and burst out of the pocket. Those shortcomings cannot be overlooked. If the rest of the FBS schools thought those shortcomings could be overlooked, they would have pulled the trigger on scholarship offers, and only Washington State did.
That means that Notre Dame is pretty much the lone wolf on this one, and quite honestly, there is ample reason to concur with their decision.
If this kid were 6-foot-3, scouts and schools would be raving about him. He plays the game maturely, both in terms of his physical strength as well as his feel and instincts for various aspects of playing the quarterback position.
He knows what he needs to do in order to be successful and he carries out that plan. His anticipation of where the football will need to be when it’s time for the receiver to make the catch is uncanny, and his accuracy looks to be pinpoint.
Quite honestly, Notre Dame is taking a huge leap of faith at the most critical position in the game of football. Ultimately, it’s just one scholarship. But it says a lot about the state of your quarterback recruiting when the last two you’ve nabbed were committed to other schools, as Brandon Wimbush (Penn State) and Book were. It also may say something about where Notre Dame stands with Hunter Johnson, although there have been some positive signs for the Irish and an expressed confidence within the football office of ultimately landing him.
If there’s an undersized pro-style quarterback that can make it work at Notre Dame, this kid certainly seems to have the tools and the intangibles to do it. Can’t criticize this move with as many winning qualities as Book shows.

Long Term / Career

I think Book has everything he needs to be a solid career backup. That might sound like damning with faint praise, but as we saw in the 2013 season, when Tommy Rees was the only viable quarterback we had, it's actually a pretty important role. Wimbush is the kind of talent you don't see very often, and whoever we bring in with the 2017 cycle will be of an ilk with Brandon. Book will do the very important job of spelling the lead dog when he needs it, and not cratering the team's win probability metric when he's pressed into action.

My apologies OMM but I did find it funny because that was literally the first time I've ever heard somebody say that it was a good offer or commitment because Mike Leach wanted him. I literally did laugh. Sorry if it offended you.

Also you can post all the stats you want, he runs an air raid system. From previous posting isn't that the opposite of what you want here? Why would you then want to recruit the same as him?

For some more context below is his wiki page and he is 96-68 as a head coach. Makes a winning percentage of 58%, I wouldn't call that good. Back out this absurd run he's had at WSU and his winning % was 66%, still not that good.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mike_Leach_(American_football_coach)#Coaching_career

Yeah, I understand your point. But zeroing in on Mike Leach as more than additional cred (which is really all OMM was doing) is conflation. It is nice to have an athlete that is in his high school hall of fame. But what if it isn't? Does it change his value one bit? I think not.

So saying that Mike Leach has coached some productive quarterbacks and Mike Leach wants this kid is fair logic.

Bringing Mike Leach's system, or the whole conversation about a "system quarterback" is not. There is just no possible "connect" there.

To me the only salient point in that neck of the woods is, "Has Mike Leach produced more productive quarterbacks than Brian Kelly has at Notre Dame?

I think the answer is yes. And I don't want to take this any further.

Where it would be fun to go :
  • But I will say that you can Book it now, Ian will surprise a few!
  • He will fit in to the ND roster as an important piece, even if he never becomes a starter.
  • How many great starters at ND have come out of recruits not considered by the experts as starter material?
  • Weren't there a bumper crop of quarterbacks coming out of California in the last couple of years? So how would a kid like this rate in a non-bumper crop year, or couple of years?
  • What special skills does he bring to the Irish?
  • Is this an indication of Mike Sanford, "shaking up the room?" To what end?

Facts is he has a strong arm. Looks like a damn good natural passer. And yea he's not the fastest but he looks to have decent pocket awareness, and that's what really matters. He competes and that's the point, he's the quaterback version of Nicco Fertitta. He's gonna come in and compete with Brandon Wimbush and help raise the level of quarterback play.

Honestly I can't wait to see this kid in a spring game, he's a slinger

Besides Joe, there was another 6' QB that did pretty well at ND. Shares the same initials as the HC.

No way. His coach thinks his pupil is the best-kept secret at QB in the country?

We didn't even have a thread on him until 8 days ago, AFTER he committed.

I was more speaking to his coach thinking he's awesome. News at 11, indeed.

Speaking nothing to his actual ability, that's like me writing a story quoting your mom as thinking you're the most handsome boy in the world and any girl would be lucky to have you.

Yea, that would be silly.

Everyone knows I'm the most handsome in the world. My mom says so.

Actually came away very impressed with his highlights. He does a good job scrambling and looking for an open receiver after his first target is covered. Threw a few good throws after broken routes too.

Am I the only one that completely forgets that we have a '16 QB committed?

Whenever I see this bumped, i'm like "Oh nice, a new commit".

But then I remember that he is not new.

He's not listed on the front page, which makes me always forget as well

Squares his shoulders to the line before throwing, particularly on a rollout better than any recent ND quarterback, and can buy more time with his feet without blowing his pocket than Golson ever could.

He also appears to be a bit of an elusive runner.

Did you plan on being unimpressed? The kid is a boss, if was taller than 6'0, he'd be big-time prospect
