That kid is going places, and not just because he turned down those two schools.

Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh and his staff pressured a player to quit football, reportedly asking defensive lineman Ondre Pipkins to sign a medical scholarship form "about 10 times over a two month period," according to comments from the player to ESPN.

Michigan DL says Jim Harbaugh, staff pressured him to retire - CBSSports.com

That's a bad look. At least Meyer was smart enough to have the doctors do the dirty work for him with the guys he wants to cut.

Pipkins was an elite recruit, too.

Does everyone remember the BS he pulled with Doug Baldwin and Richard Sherman?

Sherman as a breakout All-American level WR as a freshman at Stanford. Then Harbaugh tried to force him to play through injury, Sherman tried but eventually shut it down, and then Harbaugh went ballistic and said that Sherman would "never play for him again" and buried him on the depth chart just because he's an asshole. So then the defensive coaches were like "well if you don't want him, can we give him a try at CB?" And the rest is history... that's how a 6'3" freshman AA WR ends up switching to CB late in his career. Then Harbaugh talked bad about him to NFL scouts, he slid to the 5th round, and now he is an All-Pro. Go figure.

Baldwin almost transferred out because things with Harbaugh got so bad... he had his papers ready to go but his mom convinced him that he should just stick it out and get his degree because it would be worth it. Despite good production and talent, he went completely undrafted... because Harbaugh talked shit about him being "mentally soft" among other things.

Some classic scUM banter on this topic over on MGoBlow.com

As expected, the patrons over there are just throwing this dude under the bus, reversing, and pulling forward again. Classic scUM.

Theories being tossed around by Mgoblog

1. Harbaugh cares for his players and knows it's in Pipkins best interest to not play football

2. Harbaugh could possibly be concerned about Pipkins work ethic and the medical stuff is just a convenient excuse to get him out of the program and away from the other players

3. Harbaugh has some plans to use the spot for a late transfer

4. Pipkins has not used his redshirt, so if Harbaugh thinks that he won't use Pipkins this year, Pipkins could in theory burn his redshirt and still be eligible for another year. So even if they have room in the current year, Harbaugh would be faced with the choice of cutting Pipkens next year or having one less scholarship to offer someone in the 2016 class.

Idk...knee injury and two concussions, might be time for him to hangup the cleats and think about the rest of his life.

I remember Pipkins coming out of high school, big time player.

Yeah, as much as I want this to be bad pub for UM and Harbaugh, I'm thinking this is more just sour grapes from Pipkins than anything else. Especially if the part about multiple concussions is true. Guess we'll find out once we see if another school is willing to let him on the field or not.

All that means is that the cartilage is worn or roughened. The number of college and pro football players that have some "arthritis in their knees?" 90%.

Concussions, are a different story. I do not like them Sam I am.

But still how many football players continue to play with a history of two concussions? I think we all would be surprised.

A couple of NFL quarterbacks have had so many they have named theirs.

If two concussions and a knee injury = retirement, the NFL hasn't got that memo.

The biggest thing that makes this all fishy is how he was cleared to play by UM doctors and then after Harbaugh wanted him to take the medical they sent him back to the doctors and he was then deemed unfit to play while obtaining no additional injuries from the time he was cleared to the time he was uncleared, for lack of a better word. I'm not going to pretend to know all the behind the scenes details and Harbaugh and staff could be doing the right thing...but that whole clearing and unclearing thing (mostly the timeline of it all) seems weird.

Missed it. Was Cowherd pushing something stupid, or was Harbaugh an ass?

from reddit:

Yeah it was all around weird on both parts I thought. Definitely more on Harbaugh's side though.
Cowherd started the interview by asking Harbaugh if there's ever any moments in the day that Harbaugh isn't in intense coach mode. (Or a question like that)
Harbaugh responds by saying "Hello, how are you?" to Cowherd, since Cowherd pretty much skipped that part. Weird on Cowherd's part. Cowherd responds "Hello, good to hear from you blah blah" Then asks his original question again. Harbaugh then tries to the answer and just kinda goes "Uhh I don't know, I'd have to go ask my wife"
Then Cowherd brings up the Big Ten and how there's quite a few coaches that are the up and coming and that if Harbaugh thinks the Big Ten is a "buy"... Harbaugh was confused and thought he meant "bye" as in a bye-week. I was kind of confused as well by the question.
Then Cowherd makes it clear as he meant "buy" - Harbaugh just kinda didn't really answer. He was just like "uhh yeah"
Cowherd asked like 5 or so legitimate questions but Harbaugh just kind of answered like "uhh yeah" or "I'm not sure, I don't know"
Harbaugh then asks "What do you want out of this?" (talking about the interview itself.)
Cowherd then just kind of said "Ok this is done" and hung up.
It was odd.
