In that line of work, though, you just have to put it out of your mind and deal with it later. It is similar to being a soldier; you don't get the day off of an invasion just because your best friend in the world died in your arms. You compartmentalize it, finish your day, and then deal with it later.

But it shouldn't be IMO.

Battling against the enemy and upholding the peace of private citizens should not be the same.

The jobs are NOT similar... the need to compartment some of the things that you see is. That's a psychological concept, and it's only one concept of one facet of the job.

See, this is a problem. After seeing a death like that, he shouldn't have been responding to this type of call. The brain needs to have time to filter through that.

After the day he had, he was probably relieved to resign.

Very true. Initially, he had tried to get out of responding to either the 2nd suicide call or the party, but then decided that he was needed and should just go anyway, despite not having had time to deal with working the first suicide.

My opinion:

Your kids should NEVER push back at the police. They will lose, each and every time. And the harder they push back, the more drastic the consequences are likely to be. They should comply and then let their parents do the protesting for them. Better to have your son or daughter humiliated by a cop, and you not be able to do much other than complain about it, than to have your son or daughter shot by a cop because they resisted, and the cop got a little too worried/agitated.

This would be significantly easier to teach kids, if every cop wore a body camera, every time they were on duty.

We would still be British if we acted that way. We would be drinking out of white and black water fountains. Prohibition would be the law of the land and we would constantly be under the thumbs of a sheriff or police chief. I do not want my kids to accept an existence like that -- not in this country. I would and do tell them to always be respectful and to fully expect the same treatment in return. None of us should think it is acceptable to be bullied by officers and for them to ratchet up their bullying when they are annoyed. Cops do not and absolutely should not have that kind of unchecked authority over people.

You have to pick your spots, man. Take the bullying, get out of the situation unharmed and then take it up with their superiors or file civil suits to prevent future abuse/right the wrong. You have to teach your kids to protect their own well being. It's just an unfortunate reality.

100 percent agree with that. As I said I advise civility and respect for cops and everyone else. But I do not want my kids to feel as though they are powerless to defy illegal orders from anyone.

The thought of worrying about their well being with cops suggests a major problem to me. Again, I always tell them to be respectful and courteous. If, for example, my son was one of the boys who that cop shoved to the ground at the pool party I would tell them to follow the instructions. When he pulled the gun out, i would hope that they would get up and sprint in the other direction as soon as they could, no matter what his orders were. They do not have to comply with crazy.

One of these days, you will come to some new realizations about the world around you. One of the biggest will be that you are sick and tired of hearing the same old excuses from people, over and over and over and over, and over, again. At that time, your worldview will change a little. You'll look back on statements like this, and say, "I was pretty dumb back then." It's not a fault of yours, it is simply how we progress through life. It's been this way for ages, and isn't likely to change anytime soon.

K-Mo, I respect and love you dearly, but I must call BS on the assumption that attitudes, opinions and actions inexorably stray toward the realm of O'Reilly or Limbaugh. There are liberals aplenty that qualify for AARP discounts at McDonalds. I am one of them, though I've not set foot or driven to the drive-thru of a Mickey D's in over two decades.

What was, still is. What is will continue to be. Buffered a bit, perhaps, but not gone till stripped to bare metal and refinished completely.

It's a long, arduous and tedious process. To forget one's past and passion is folly.

(I hope its understood I'm not insinuating YOU are disrespectful, etc. I'm using you in the general sense.)

I get it. I do and as a cop, I look at as respect for all. You, me, and Dupree. Cops arrive at situations for a reason so show respect first, allow them to do their job, and if you feel violated or a violation coming, take out your phone, record, then report. Your job on the other end of this encounter is to report these matters and not to take them into your literal hands (other then to record).

Cops hate bad cops as much as the rest. But I also hate bad people who do bad things and all I'm trying to do, is figure it out.

This is a fucking brilliant way to parent............ if the cop pulls his gun, you run like hell. If he is chasing you and yelling at you to stop or he will shoot....... you just keep on running, sonny boy. We'll put "I WAS RIGHT!!!" on your headstone.

Nowhere did I mention that they stray toward one side of the political spectrum or the other. I merely indicated that, as his life experiences evolve, so likely will his viewpoint. And eventually he will look back and say "Geez. That was pretty dumb of me." It won't change every view of his, but tell me that you don't ever think about some view you held when you were younger and think to yourself, "That was really fucking naïve of me." or "What the hell was I thinking then?"

Are we really comparing fighting for a country's independence to a pool party that got out of control?

I think he is moreso comparing modern police officers to the tyrannical government of England in the late 1700s.

I don't think you believe that is what I was saying, but, no we are not comparing those two things.

I think they would be safer to stand still or sit still if he pulled his gun. We've all been commenting lately on police shooting people as they ran away. Running away is rolling the dice with your life.

You are probably right, but at one point he was pretty far away and looking the other way. That is how the 16-year-old goirish41 would have handled it. :)

This entire thread reinforces my belief that Rand Paul would beat Hillary Clinton in a landslide if he managed to squeak through the primary. The libs in this thread are talking like him. That's what I call crossover appeal.

So what you are saying is that because a cop might do something wrong such as shoot a fleeing person in the back without proof of them doing wrong (which to the best of my knowledge is not what they are supposed to do), we should do what they say even if it is wrong? So what you are really saying is that the cops are the problem. Thanks.

I agree, with your general point, both sides should be respectful and it definitely flows both ways, if the person is a jackass, it will generally make the cop less respectful, just as if the cop is a dick it will make the citizen be less respectful. The one issue I see with what you say is that some cops try to stop citizens from recording and some places have even tried to make it illegal to record cops (Texas Bill Would Make Recording Police Illegal).

No. What I'm saying is that it is fucking retarded to teach your kids to put themselves into real danger because *you* don't think the police can be trusted. You don't trust the police not to violate your kid's civil liberties, but you DO trust them not to shoot him in the back if he refuses to stop even when they threaten to shoot him? In what fucking parallel universe does that even come close to making sense?

The problem is that it isn't about teaching your child, when someone pulls a gun your instincts kick in. I will give you an example.

I worked for a long time in bank management, where you are taught to comply with demands. If someone robs the branch it is pounded into your head over and over to comply, comply, comply (unless they try to take you out of the branch then do whatever the fuck you need to do to have them leave you there). I had a friend who worked in banking for 30 years and was on vacation when she went into a convenience store and when she came out she found a large man (6'3" 250+) breaking into her car and going through her suitcase, instead of responding to her training (which would have been let them have it and call the police from inside the store), she went up to him and said hey that is my stuff, leave it alone. He pulled out a gun and got into his car and drove off. See the thing is you can tell people over and over how to respond in these situations but the truth is that you don't know how people will respond when it happens. While we should teach our children to be respectful we should also hold our police offices to high standards which is to not shoot people in the back when they run away especially if they are not dangerous criminals and if they want to shoot people in the back when they aren't a threat then they are the problem not the person running away. Sorry.

Fun fact – I initially (and very briefly) supported Nixon because of his promise "to end the Viet Nam conflict with honor." It was an an anti-LBJ war stance more than anything else.

Man, did that come back to bite me in the ass.

There's much more to the story, but I'll save that for another day.

Early this morning individuals shot up Dallas PD Headquarters. They have 1 in a stand off in a get away van in a parking lot. Apparently the suspect in the van is injuried. One pipe bomb went off on the robot.
