Difference is 477 vs. Tim Couch. It really works in our favor, especially NOW after falling off under previous head coaches.
The mail is a marketing tool for ND. Sure the ultimate goal is to help recruit the kid. But they know the kid isnt going to read all the pieces. But Dalton Schultz's video has over 25,000 views, think of all the threads/articles/tweets/facebook posts/etc across the country. ND is in the news. ND is being talked about. Thats the underlying goal of the campaign.
Where I disagree with you is that I don't think it is all that creative. Other schools like Kentucky are doing the same kind of thing. Don't get me wrong, I would do handstands if I received that kind of love from Notre Dame, but an offer on it's own would blow me away far more than any cutesy trick like this. But I agree that the ND degree has to be a major factor, otherwise why would the kid go to a school where he will have to work his butt off to pass? There are plenty of football factories where a player can focus on football alone.

to add to TP's post...
For all those who think it is cringeworthy and not sure about it, let me say this, I would doubt if it went past this year. If it did, it might go thru next year at best, but you can't do it too much because it is meant as an attention grabber and if it is done all the time, then it won't accomplish that goal.
You can insult all you want. This is not a black and white issue. If you think calling someone "unreasonable" is going to convince anyone of anything you are quite incorrect. What is unreasonable is the refusal to recognize that a rational person can have different opinions from yourself.
Nose tackle tooIf we get him... this class is complete.
The point is I don't think your opinion is rational. If you think saying someone's opinion is "odd" and "unreasonable" is an insult, you (a) haven't been on this site long enough; (b) need thicker skin. You can have the last word as I'm now done with this topic.

You're absolutely right.
We can only do that business one (maybe two) cycles, or it just gets silly.
Good on our recruiting staff for doing it this time though.

Well, me in the twenties thinks this is a great waste of paper. Me
at 17 would have flipped out and commit on the spot.
The point of view of a rational adult is not the same as an excited teenager. We have to always keep that in mind when we address recruiting.
Hello All! First post here.
Im all for ND recruiting. A part of me dislikes this because in my own selfish way, I see ND well above other universities. I can see a UK or UCLA or FL doing this (mass mail). To me, the opportunity to go to a great university such as ND speaks for itself. However, I do realize that stance is what got ND in touble with the Willingham era recruit wise. While I highly treasure ND for ND, others may not. Especially in a society where we live in that screams instant gratification and measures an university's worth in numbers of NCs that it has one recently rather than what the school actually does for someone post playing days.
But again, if it works, maybe the end justifies the means?
Speaking of academics in Elam's thread... anyone know why he was taking the SAT or ACT last weekend? Does he still have work to do?
