Love this kid's attitude. Always team first.

It will be fun to see him play this year. Whether it be in garbage time or otherwise, I will be excited to see what he brings to the table.

Serious questions because I really don't know: How much impact does his left-handed throwing style have on the offense? Does it mainly just affect the OL and how easy/difficult is it for them to adjust?

Paging OMM for an OL breakdown of the technical stuff...

I am waiting for Mike's check in too.

The big difference on the line is where you need your backside protection. And interestingly enough we did have Elmer at right guard, and Stanley at right tackle. Not to say one or more may not move left for right handed Golson. But Harry moves guys around.

Receivers I am sure it makes a difference for because of roll outs, throwing across the body, etc. So with running do you run right to set the ball on the right hash, so you can roll left, and take advantage of your quarterback in the air? Because we saw more improvement in running right this year. This could have more to do with personnel, but still, that is another item off the left handed quarterback check-list.

The big difference I can see in recruits and Harry's coaching is speed. These guys are bigger than ever and they move faster than ever. That bodes well for a mobile quarterback, whether you are talking Golson or Zaire, doesn't it?

It can change which way you want your QB to rollout as well (A left handed QB will have an easier time throwing rolling left, while a right handed QB would have an easier time going right), though usually you still roll out both ways. As others have pointed out already the blind side is different so you would want your best pass blocking tackle at RT not LT, etc. The ball looks different coming from a left hander and spins the opposite direction but WR should be able to adjust quickly.

As an aside Belicheck likes to have left footed punters because they are rare and the ball spins different which makes it harder for the other team to catch.

I don't buy it coach. I understand that in theory it's possible and you have to say that to get the best out of both of these guys. But I'd put money on Golson starting. In fact I want even give it a second thought.

Maybe it's just coach speak, but it's correct coach speak. How fair is it to Zaire if he doesn't get a fair shot? While he's only been in the program for a year, he's done the right things for the last year. Golson did screw up, has done his time, but that doesn't mean he automatically wins the job. Maybe it's just Kelly saying this to be fair to Zaire, maybe he's really going to do a true competition, who knows? Makes sense not to screw over your future QB by not giving him some confidence and a shot. QB's need confidence, telling Zaire he's not even ready to compete isn't going to make him better.

Cheers thanks that must've been it.

Totally agree with this. I think Golson needs to hear this more than Malik even. Golson totally messed up, bad. And he needs to know there are consequences for such actions. I also believe it could be true. Malik could be pretty darn good and he may have a shot at the job, who knows?

This is where I'm at. I think Zaire could legitamately contend for the spot. They have loved his majority and ability to pick up the playbook early on. He goes into this season with two springs and a full season under his belt. It would not surprise me if he is way ahead of where he was last spring.

You don't think losing the QB job for an entire season qualifies as sufficient consequences?

I think Golson needs the competition more than Malik.

Golson had to get pulled plenty of times when the game "got too big for him" and now we will be asking him to be the man. The fact that he earned his way back to this team shows that he is a competitor. But why stall that competitive spirit by simply handing him the reins? Winning the job will only be a good thing for Golson, imo.

He was pulled 2 times (Purdue and Michigan). I don't think that qualifies as "plenty". OU and onward, Golson was very solid.

Yes, I think the competition is good for both of them. Hopefully it is decided at the end of spring practice. To fully get the offense off and running the offense needs to be fully comfortable with the qb.

Don't get too ahead of yourself. I wasn't too happy about hearing how he basically lost interest for 4-5 weeks during the season.

Rees came in more than those two games. Those were just the two games he was asked to win the game.

Maybe he was very solid but I would say that Golson was rather average for the Oklahoma, Pittsburgh and USC games at the end of the season. I find it interesting how many people say that Golson took a big leap at the end of the season.

Here are the last couple of games

Oklahoma 13/25 52% 177 yds. 0 tds. 0 int
Pittsburgh 23/42 54.8% 227 yds. 2 tds 1 int
Boston College 16/24 66.7% 200 yards 2 tds 0 int
Wake Forest 20/30 66.7% 346 yds 3 tds 1 int
USC 15/26 57.7% 217 yds 0 tds 0 int

Alabama 21/36 58.3% 270 yds 1 td 1 int

WF and BC were great games but against inferior opponents (rather like Rees having good games against bad teams), Alabama was a very good game but not great and so was Pitt though Pitt wasn't very good. I would argue that Oklahoma and USC were rather average games. I don't get why a large number of people thought he turned the corner at the end of the season.

Would it make sense for Kelly to award the starting QB spot to anyone....in January?
