I posted in the Spring Practice thread that I think this was BK's way of telling Justin to use his free time concentrating on football instead of play time with the girls. Hope he isn't satisfied with simply earning a scholly.

I think Kelly is really just stating the obvious. Shit or get off the pot. We recruit too well for someone to wait for their time. You have to earn it.

He's talented, obviously. BK wouldn't throw this out there if he didn't think he could be a big-time player.

I think it is business with BK. If you aren't going to play to your potential, don't let the door hit you on the a$$, on the way out. ND needs five to seven scholarships, doesn't it?

And further, I think Kelly's coaching personality is that he pushes out the talented guy that won't apply, faster than the less that does better than his best.

Nail on the head.

He obviously sees the potential in Justin or he wouldn't care to challenge him publicly.

Coach has said about Justin exactly what we've heard him say about other players in the past who were not taking every practice at high intensity --- he said it about Daniels and he even said it about Big Lou at the start... Jarron Jones... I'd remember others if it was important.

This is Kelly. He knows that he's got a potential big time player, but that player doesn't show the intensity to go with his elite skill set. Coach does not pamper. Plus, this year he knows that with the rare exception of a talent like Stanley or JSmith, he can replace almost anyone without breathing heavily. So... he says what he says to Brent.

The upside to this story is that Brent understands it. He said that he has to get out of Coach's doghouse --- which, in my opinion, had nothing to do with pornstars but entirely about on-the-practice-field football. This then will come down to an internal battle between Justin the uber-talented receiver who wants to play vs Justin the guy who likes to fool around occasionally at the wrong times.

We'll see which Justin wins. Whatever happens Coach will have given him a fair chance.

I don't disagree with anything that OMM wrote, but there's an important distinction worth mentioning here. It's true that Nix and Jones both turned things around after getting called out for immaturity/ lack of motivation; but as DTs, they were never really at risk for losing their jobs because we're always so thin at DL. Brent doesn't have that luxury at WR.

And the comparison to Daniels doesn't bode well for him either. Davaris was the most talented WR on our roster for three straight years, and yet he barely managed to scratch the surface of his potential due to his immaturity. He's certainly one of our biggest busts over the past 5 years or so (Ishaq being his main competitor for that dubious distinction). Hopefully Brent isn't the next Daniels.

Agree with both of you. Brent better figure it out soon.

As if we didn't have a full WR corps last year:

Chris Brown, Amir Carlisle, Will Fuller, Corey Holmes, Tori Hunter Jr., CJ Prosise, Corey Robinson

We now have incoming freshman that include: Sanders, Guyton, Boykin and ESB. Alize doesn't make it any easier as they can throw him on the field as a flex TE/WR.

I'm rooting for Brent to figure it out as he was always committed to ND and willing to work hard.

His lack of performance so far is puzzling, because he busted hump in HS to get better and earn a scholly. That's why I wonder if he's simply satisfied at this point? Hope he gets it figured out soon.

To be fair he was a redshirted freshman at a deep position last year. Four years ahead of him still. I want to see Brent turn it up too, but it's not like he's a junior or something. See how spring works out for him.

Brent was not redshirted. He is listed in the participation chart on special teams against USC.

Redshirt or not, that doesn't prevent him from putting in the times and effort before, during or after practice. IMO that's what BK is referencing.

I seem to recall Kelly making motivational comments abot a kid named Floyd ... more than once.

The rest of us have to read about those kind of things. Mike heard them in real time.
