seemed exposed a few times in the passing games, but that doesnt mean he and max weren't doing their jobs getting everyone lined up.

still work to do, but he's getting better.

The former outcast had 6 tackles against Stanford with a 16 sack and a QBH. The sack came on the last play of the game when he nailed Hogan as he was attempting to get Stanford into game tying FG range. Shumate was a heat seeking missile and forced Hogan into a wild throw that drew a game ending grounding flag.

That was exactly what I said when watching the game. He looked like a missile shooting in there! Damn I love beating the Trees!

He was certainly targeted by them in the passing game. However, I think that's a bigger credit to the corners and Max than a negative to Elijah.

But that blitz scared me because it left Montgomery in single man coverage with no safety over top. What a call.

Props to Riggs and our secondary for making Montgomery look irrelevant

Rewatching the USC game and Shumate struggled bad. He has been a disappointing play since his freshman year.

I was yelling all preseason about how Shumate should have been moved to nickel full-time, considering the move to a defense that essentially uses the 4-2-5 as a base.

He was lights-out as a freshman when defending in the slot. He was able to use his physicality, but also his superior athleticism in simplified responsibilities. Either blitz, sit in the zone, or trail your man. And he did/could do those things well. You could've kept Farley deep next to Redfield and hoped that he improved from a disappointing 2013. Provides the leadership of a Collinsworth with better athleticism alongside Redfield.

In the end though, it was a lose-lose situation. Regardless of who played where, the safety spot was (1) not healthy and (2) under performed.

CRYSTAL BALL

I’m bullish on Shumate, who I think will play much more fundamentally sound football in his final season in South Bend. Part of that is maturity, the other part of that is comfort in a system that demands far more than Bob Diaco’s did.

Last season, bodies dropping left and right nearly necessitated Shumate to be on the field and learning from his mistakes. That opportunity won’t be afforded to him—or anybody—this season, especially with Drue Tranquill recovered from ACL surgery and young reinforcements who can learn through their mistakes rather than a guy gone come January.

But I’m betting on Shumate, who’ll likely have his nose around the line of scrimmage, especially with great cover corners in KeiVarae Russell and Cole Luke. I’m expecting 80 total tackles and a half-dozen TFLs, with the hopes that Shumate might also force a few turnovers between dropping the hammer and stepping in front of a pass or two.

It'd be great if Shumate could end his career as a wrecking ball for BVG. I'm holding out hope that we see him make a final jump.

Listed at 224 lbs. He's always moved around well, but that is definitely on the heavy side. Would love if the coaches we're confident enough in Max to play a true center field and Shumate can float around near the line of scrimmage more.

If he has 80 tackles, that does not bode well for the defense as a whole. Those are OLB numbers. I am hoping the days of the safeties like Zibby and H. Smith being among the team lead in tackles are behind us.

I get what you are saying but I'm hoping those 80 tackles are a byproduct of BVGs blitzing nature. So hopefully a quarter are TFL and a handful+ are sacks. Then 60 doesn't sound so bad if he's playing near the line of scrimmage and acting as a 4 LB 50% of the time.

Now if Redfield has those same numbers, we aren't getting home with our front 7.

... it would be an indication that he can wrap rather than launch his body like a missile.

If it's a concussion, then we're very fortunate that the BYE is up next week. Actually I take that back, because we EARNED this BYE week.

Rest up boys, this week was more stressful than most seasons are.

Yeah. He walked off. Hard to say what but hopefully he's OK. Shumate's one we can't really afford to go down, especially with Tranquill out.

Whats the update with Avery? We should have him back after the bye, no? Hopefully he's been studying...

Actually I wonder if Shumate had to miss a game if Redfield could play SS. He looked much more comfortable today at the end of the game when he was closer to the LOS.

You know, Max actually played quite well tonight. I still hope Shumate is OK. He has been fantastic.
